Abstract

Spirulina platensis contains nutrients such as proteins, essential amino acids, fatty acids, minerals, pigments, carotenoids, and vitamins, which have strong antioxidant properties. This study evaluated the impact of extraction solvents (70% methanol, 70% ethanol, and 70% acetone) on antioxidant activity, with the most effective extract formulated into tablets. Extraction was performed by maceration. Tablet preparations were characterized by moisture content, flow rate, angle of repose, organoleptic properties, weight uniformity, hardness, disintegration time, and friability. The results showed that the 70% methanol extract exhibited the highest antioxidant activity (IC₅₀ = 45.57 ± 0.01 ppm), superior to 70% acetone (IC₅₀ = 67.15 ± 0.07 ppm) and 70% ethanol (IC₅₀ = 85.32 ± 1.21 ppm), although lower than vitamin C (IC₅₀ = 3.52 ± 0.01 ppm). Tablets prepared from 70% methanol extract fulfilled all pharmaceutical quality requirements.

Abstract

Escherichia coli is a type of bacteria that often found in wound infections. The use of antibiotics to treat these uncontrolled infections has resulted in the emergence of multi-drug resistant (MDR) strains of pathogenic bacteria.  This rapid increase in MDR E. coli strains has led to significant morbidity and mortality in human populations. Consequently, the exploration of natural antibacterial agents is urgently needed. One promising resource is mango extract, which is recognised for its antibacterial properties and is obtained through solvent extraction using 96% ethanol. This study aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of seed extracts from seven different mango cultivars (Mangifera indica L.), against MDR E. coli. The study focused on determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) using dilution method. The concentrations examined for both MIC and MBC were 5, 10, 50, and 100 mg/mL. The results indicate that the mango seed extract exhibit significant antibacterial activity against MDR-E. coli., with the kweni cultivar showing the largest inhibition zone measuring 23.25 mm. The ethanol extract from the kweni seeds yielded the most favorable results, with an MIC value of ≥0.078 mg/mL and an MBC value that ranged from 1.25-10 mg/mL. In conclusion, mango seed extract, particularly from the kweni cultivar, has substantial potential to be developed as an effective antibacterial agent against MDR-E. coli.

Abstract

The quest for better and more effective treatments has encouraged the search for therapies derived from natural sources to obtain effective immune therapy, considering that several pandemics have arisen caused by viruses. Developing fucoidan from brown algae in drug encapsulation as an immunomodulator could be more promising. This study aimed to produce nanoencapsulation loaded with fucoidan-purified extract from brown algae and to evaluate the influence of nanoencapsulation formulation on the immunomodulatory activity of fucoidan. Fucoidan was obtained from brown algae and extracted by hot aqueous, followed by ethanol purification. Nanoencapsulation of fucoidan purified extract was prepared using the ionic gelation method. The carbon clearance method was carried out for the immunomodulatory activity test of the nanoencapsulation of fucoidan purified extract. Nanoencapsulation of fucoidan purified extract with the optimum composition of maltodextrin 9.9% and S-TPP 0.1% (1:5) resulted in particle size of 715.4 nm, zeta potential -0.1 mV, pH 7.54, transmittance 97.54%+0.08, and entrapment efficiency 89.94%+0.17. The carbon clearance test showed that the nanoencapsulation of fucoidan was a strong immunostimulant with a phagocytosis index of 1.65. The development of nanoencapsulation could increase the phagocytosis index of fucoidan purified extracts from brown algae. Further molecular studies are needed to demonstrate the molecular activity of this preparation as an immunomodulator.

Abstract

Permasalahan kesehatan di Desa Bejalen sangat kompleks. Salah satunya adalah Diabetes mellitus tipe 2(DMT2) merupakan salah satu penyakit kronis yang angka kejadian dan komplikasi yang diakibatkannya terusmeningkat dari waktu ke waktu. Kondisi tenaga kesehatan yang terbatas membutuhkan keterlibatan kaderkesehatan sebagai pemberdayaan masyarakat agar masyarakat faham tentang Diabetes Melitus. Selain itu,masyarakat tidak pernah melakukan deteksi dini dan skrining gula darah. Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk memberikanedukasi tentang penyakit DM dan cara pengatasannya, serta memberikan pelatihan pembuatan minuman fungsionalAloe vera yang dapat digunakan untuk menunjang pengobatan penyakit DM.Aloe vera (Lidah buaya) merupakan tanaman obat yang berpotensi untuk dikembangkan. Pemanfaatanlidah buaya dapat dijadikan berbagai produk makanan dan minuman, salah satunya adalah dengan membuatminuman fungsional dari lidah buaya. Aloe vera telah diketahui memiliki aktivitas sebagai sebagai antidiabetes.Ibu-ibu PKK desa Bejalen belum memahami khasiat Aloe vera secara ilmiah. Pada pengabdian ini dilaksanakanedukasi tentang khasiat Aloe vera dan menguasai cara pengolahannya sehingga akan terwujud prinsip kemandiriandalam pengobatan keluarga. Selain itu juga dapat dikembangkan menjadi usaha kecil dan menengah di bidang obatherbal, yang selanjutnya dapat disalurkan ke masyarakat.

Abstract

Gaya hidup “back to nature” semakin berkembang dan diminati oleh masyarakat. Salah satu tanaman herbal yang umum dikonsumsi oleh masyarakat adalah kunyit. Kunyit (Curcuma longa L) dengan kandungan kurkumin dilaporkan memiliki potensi terapeutik seperti antibiotik, antivirus, antioksidan. Penggunaan kunyit sering dikombinasikan dengan Asam Jawa (Tamarindus indica) menjadi sebuah minuman jamu kunyit asam. Buah asam juga menunjukkan potensi sebagai antidiabetes, anti hiperlipidemik, dan antioksidan. Paguyuban kader remaja di bawah binaan Puskesamas Bangun Galih, Tegal dibiasakan budaya minum jamu. Selain itu, para kader remaja ini diberikan pelatihan-pelatihan bermanfaat antara lain pelatihan pembuatan jamu instan Kunyit Asem. Pada daerah ini belum ada kelompok masyarakat yang memproduksi jamu instan kunyit asem. Hal ini diduga disebabkan oleh kurangnya pengetahuan dan keterampilan masyarakat dalam memproduksi minuman kunyit asam, khususnya kunyit asam dalam bentuk minuman serbuk. Metode pelaksanaan pengabdian berupa penyuluhan tentang Obat Tradisional yang kemudian dilanjutkan dengan pemutaran video cara pembuatan jamu instan kunyit asam. Hasil yang diperoleh para kader remaja menjadi mengerti tentang definisi, pengelompokkan dan penandaan obat tradisional serta mengerti dan paham cara pembuatan jamu instan kunyit asam. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan meningkatnya pengetahuan pada saat diberikan pertanyaan mengenai obat tradisional dan cara pembuatan jamu instan kunyit asam.
