Abstract

Many researchers have examined the implementation of the promotion method toward the agency principle of multicultural theory. However, little has examined the corrective feedback in promoting the tenet. Given the corrective feedback, the learner will be less used of their reflective thinking to promote themselves as an agent. Therefore, this study aimed to promote learners' agency by eliminating the corrective feedback in writing class and encouraging learners' reflective thinking. Three non-formal intermediate learners writing ability is analyzed in this study. The material given was following the syllabus of the course which is expressing of obligation and prohibition. There were three tasks given in this class. The first task is an individual project, the second is a group project, and the third is an individual project. After the learner finished the task the researcher analyzed the learner's writing improvement by analyzing the frequency and the variation of the lexical used and the grammar detail. Using Primary Trait Scoring, the findings pointed out that the writing ability of the learners improved both lexically and grammatically. Besides, the findings also supported that language produced by the learners is complex, dynamics, and more individual. It is expected that this research could be a consideration for educational stakeholders to select the appropriate method for the learners

Abstract

Teaching German as a foreign language in Indonesia requires the integration of linguistic and cultural aspects to develop students’ intercultural competence. Textbooks play a significant role in representing culture, yet most language learning materials tend to portray culture superficially and selectively. This study aims to analyze the representation of cultural elements in the textbook Deutsch echt einfach A1.1 für Jugendliche using a qualitative descriptive approach and content analysis method. Data were obtained from the book’s textual and visual content, analyzed through the lens of Dweik et al.’s (2015) twelve cultural elements framework. The findings reveal that elements such as food and beverages, social behavior, and family relationships are the most frequently represented. In contrast, deeper cultural elements such as history, politics, religion, ecology, and economy are scarcely present. These results indicate that the textbook focuses primarily on surface-level culture and does not fully support the development of students’ intercultural competence. The implication is that teachers and curriculum developers need to supplement textbooks with more critical, holistic, and contextually relevant cultural materials to enhance foreign language learning.

Abstract

Extensive research has been conducted on environmental integration within textbooks linguistically, visually, or statistically. However, comparative analysis involving examining multiple language textbooks has been relatively underutilized in the existing body of research. This study seeks to address this gap by employing a comparative approach to evaluate environmental discourse in two foreign language textbooks, Bahasa Inggris (English) and Kontakte Deutsch 3 (German). Using Eco-Critical Discourse Analysis (ECDA), this research uncovered the ecological integration and ideological underpinnings present in each textbook. The analysis indicates that Bahasa Inggris contains 87% eco-beneficial discourse, with 8% eco-ambivalent and 6% eco-destructive content, suggesting a solid emphasis on positive environmental messaging. In contrast, Kontakte Deutsch 3 exhibits 95% eco-beneficial discourse, no eco-ambivalent content, and only 5% eco-destructive discourse, reflecting a clearer commitment to positive ecological messaging. Further, Kontakte Deutsch 3 emphasizes ecological sensitivity (97%) more than Bahasa Inggris (73%). However, Bahasa Inggris offers more content on ecological knowledge (15%) and skills (13%) compared to Kontakte Deutsch 3 (1.5% each). Both types minimally address ecological distribution, Bahasa Inggris, including original representation (0.6%), and Kontakte Deutsch 3 neglect it. Overall, Kontakte Deutsch 3 presents a more pronounced focus on positive environmental content and emotional awareness, while Bahasa Inggris provides broader ecological knowledge and practical skills.

Abstract

Language has always been one of the most influential and important aspects of human life, both as a medium of communication and a tool to shape identity, communicate meaning, and deal with the uncertainties of life. In existentialism, language is used as a tool to question freedom, responsibility, and the essence of the human condition. The researcher investigated constructions related to “existentialism” through an interview with a multilingual student whose experiences illustrate many aspects of the phenomenon. Language in existentialism, examines language as a way for humans to seek meaning in life, express identity, and deal with the absurd. This research utilizes the narrative inquiry method and focuses on the experience of one participant whose narrative details language choices influenced by emotional needs, reflection, and social interaction. The findings illustrate language as a form of self-reflection, emotional activation and liberation. Using a foreign language can create emotional distance and allow for a higher degree of freedom due to less cultural pressure. The reflection of moral responsibility in communication for the effects it causes provides insight into how language influences human mindsets and information processing.

Abstract

English is agreed upon as the standard language of communication throughout the world, including Indonesia. With this, teaching and learning English should be an integral part of the national education system in Indonesia because of the importance of English globally. One of the curricula in Indonesia that focuses on teaching English for Vocational High Schools (VHS) is English for Specific Purposes (ESP), where students learn English according to their needs and fields of interest. With the existence of this ESP as well as a variety of teaching methods and approaches, there is one approach that is considered truly effective in teaching this ESP program, namely the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach. This study aims to explore a set of literature to clarify the CLIL approach and determine if the evidence shows benefits in implementing the approach into the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) curriculum. The paper took a literature review approach and explored ten articles selected with specific criteria of being published within 2014-2020. The literature shows that the implementation of CLIL does have a positive output toward the teaching and learning process, especially for those who take English for specific purposes, such as in vocational high schools. The approach improves the linguistics aspects and the non-linguistic aspect or the students' soft skills, such as high order thinking skills, problem-solving, enhanced communication, intercultural awareness, and motivation in learning. However, to meet the success of the implementation of CLIL in the ESP curriculum, some considerations and special requirements are needed. The two distinctive preparation are the syllabus for the curriculum and the readiness of human resources; the teachers. Before applying the CLIL, the two factors mentioned need mechanisms that will support the success of CLIL for the ESP curriculum in vocational high schools. The writer proposes a model to be implemented if the curriculum for vocational high schools is going to apply CLIL. Yet, it needs more researches in the future to make sure whether the model works well or needs more improvements.
