Abstract

Differentiated Instruction is a way of learning where teachers make adjustments in content, process, product, and learning environment to improve students’ learning ability. This research aims to explore how English teachers implement Differentiated Instruction and build students’ confidence in speaking English. This research was a case study. The informants were two English teachers of Sekolah Menengah Pertama Negeri (SMPN) 4 Jember, 31 students of class VIID, and 31 students of class VIIF. The data were collected through observation, interviews, and questionnaires. The data were analyzed using data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The results showed that the English teachers had implemented all elements of Differentiated Instruction to build students’ confidence in speaking English. In the interview, the teachers stated that they used various methods such as presentation, discussion, question and answer, and games to make students confident in speaking English. The interview results were in line with the observation results where during the implementation of Differentiated Instruction, teachers had provided various activities to encourage students to be more confident in speaking English. Based on the questionnaire results, there was an increasement in students’ confidence in speaking English during the implementation of Differentiated Instruction. The finding showed that the confidence of students in classes VIID and VIIF to speak English increased by 6.23% for class VIID and 1.72% for class VIIF. From the results of the study, it can be concluded that Differentiated Instruction can increase students’ confidence in speaking English.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tentang manajemen pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris ekstra di TK, SD, dan SMP Yayasan Ray English Studies Kec. Batang Gansal Kab. Indragiri Hulu Riau, serta untuk menganalisis penerapan fungsi-fungsi manajemen. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian qualitatif dengan metode penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Pelaksanaan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris Ektra sudah terlaksana dengan baik, dalam pelaksanaannya diadakan pengorganisasian sebagai dasar dalam pembagian tugas dan tanggung jawab dalam team work sehingga pelaksanaan tugas dan tanggung jawab benar-benar dilaksanakan oleh sumber daya manusia yang memiliki kompetensi dibidangnya. Untuk SD dan SMP diadakan kelas ekstra 1x seminggu, yang disebut dengan kelas English day, yaitu kelas di sore hari.   Dalam pelaksanaan juga tak kalah penting dibutuhkan penggerakan yang dilakukan oleh pimpinan, dan sudah dilaksanakan dengan baik, pola kepemimpinan yang demokratis dan jadi innovator yang baik bagi bawahannya. Pimpinan di Yayasan Ray English Studies selalu bersedia dan terbuka untuk pembelajaran bersama. Pengawasan sudah terlaksana dengan baik melalui evaluasi pembelajaran berkala. Sehingga diperoleh kesimpulan bahwa terdapat pengaruh pada manajemen pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris ekstra di TK, SD, dan SMP Yayasan Ray English Studies Kec. Batang Gansal Kab. Indragiri Hulu Riau.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to analyze how the teachers’ perception of the use of video conferencing applications in online learning, to identify the challenges that the teachers had when implementing online learning utilizing video conferencing applications, and to find out the solutions to solve the obstacles faced by the teachers. The data of this study were collected through interviews and observation of six English teachers who teach students at elementary, junior high, and senior high levels in an informal English School in Gorontalo. The methodology employed in participant selection was the utilisation of purposive sampling. The data underwent analysis through the utilisation of a descriptive qualitative approach. The process consisted of three stages: data reduction, data display, and verification. The findings of this study indicate that all of the educators exhibited a favourable impression of their motivation in using video conferencing applications for teaching purposes, their competence in operating video conferencing applications, and their recognition of the benefits provided by such programmes. However, only a subset of the teachers had a strong understanding of the dynamics of their interactions with students and their students' levels of motivation. In addition to the aforementioned factors, educators faced various obstacles when utilising video conferencing platforms for online instruction. These challenges encompassed suboptimal internet connectivity, an unsupportive academic atmosphere for students, inadequate access to educational resources, limited opportunities for teacher-student engagement, and diminished student motivation. Ultimately, the educators proffered several strategies to circumvent the obstacles that had emerged, specifically by ensuring a reliable internet connection for the faculty, furnishing educational games, and upholding effective communication with the parents.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the implementation of self-directed learning (SDL) for the tenth-grade students of SMK PGRI 2 Tanah Grogot, to analyze the effectiveness of the self-directed learning (SDL) strategy on reading comprehension skills for the tenth-grade students of SMK PGRI 2 Tanah Grogot and to analyze the student's motivation after the application of the self-directed learning (SDL) strategy of reading comprehension skills for the tenth-grade students of SMK PGRI 2 Tanah Grogot. This research used experimental investigation methods. The target population and sample of this research were all tenth-grade students of SMK PGRI 2 Tanah Grogot for the academic year 2022/2023. The total sample was 14 students. The findings of the research show that the efficiency of using self-directed learning strategy can be known from pre- and post-test comparison findings. It can be seen from the acquisition of the means of the pre-test was 43.1429 and the post-test was 85.4286 which was carried out on the same 14 samples. The questionnaire's findings answers showed that student motivation increases after carrying out the learning process. It can be seen from the frequency distribution of questionnaire statements using the Likert Scale. Based on the findings, it is possible to deduce that the use of self-directed learning strategies improves students' reading comprehension skills and motivation.

Abstract

The goal of feminism is to fully establish gender equality in law and practice while combating sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression. Cate Shortland is the director of the superhero science fiction film Black Widow. In the film, black widowed women are controlled by the Red Room Academy, a clandestine criminal organization. The primary character and former Black Widow Natasha Romanoff is depicted destroying the Red Room Academy and its male head, Dreykov. The theory of feminism and film analysis are used by the researcher to answer these research questions. There are three objectives in this research. The first objective is to describe the character value of Natasha in the movie. Next is to analyze the radical feminism shown by Natasha in the movie. Last, to analyze the moral value that the director wants to convey. This research was qualitative descriptive method by watching the movie and taking several scenes that were related to the theory. The results of this research reveal that: (1) There are three-character value from Natasha as the main character of the movie; independent, social care and perseverance. (2) The analysis reveals the radical feminism inclinations portrayed by Natasha Romanoff is the act of self-sacrifice. (3) The moral value found in Black Widow movie is about caring each other and women’s right.

Abstract

Penguasaan bahasa menjadi penting karena akses dunia digital sebagian besar menggunakan bahasa sebagai pengantarnya. Penelitian ini merupakan pengembangan media pembelajaran. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu ADDIE. Sedangkan jenis pengumpulan data yang dipakai yaitu jenis data kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Data kuantitatif diperoleh dari validasi ahli media, ahli pembelajaran, ahli bahasa, guru, hasil tes siswa. Sedangkan data kualitatif bersumber dari validasi tiga ahli tersebut, kuisoner siswa, guru, observer. Data yang diperoleh akan dianalisis secara deskriptif. Data tersebut selanjutnya direkap, dievaluasi kemudian digunakan sebagai acuan untuk melakukan revisi pada media pembelajaran circle of fun. Hasil analisis menunjukan media circle of fun layak di terapkan saat pembelajaran pada materi fruit and vegetables. Implikasi dari penelitian ini adalah seorang guru harus lebih kreatif dalam memanfaatkan media pada saat proses pembelajaran.

Abstract

Critical thinking (CT) has already been acknowledged as a significant skill in education, including in the field of English language learning. However, very few studies have investigated the challenges and strategies in enhancing students’ CT skills in English language subjects. This qualitative research aims to investigate the Indonesian English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers’ conception of the necessity of implementing CT in EFL subject. This research is also intended to find out the challenges and strategies in encouraging students to use CT in their learning process. This research employed two research tools for data collection: questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The study revealed that EFL teachers believe in the value of promoting CT in their teaching classroom activities. However, CT has been practically rarely unnoticed in the implementation of English language classes due to the EFL teachers’ concentration on linguistic skills, grammar instruction, and English communicative skills. The findings also found some challenges faced by the EFL teachers in implementing CT, as well as some strategies in promoting the skill. This research recommends the importance of involving Indonesian EFL teachers in a training on CT to enhance their understanding and allow them to stimulate CT among their students.

Abstract

Students’ failure to be successful English learners is primarily due to uninteresting materials that lead to demotivation in learning. This research aimed to uncover the students’ motivation to study in the Indonesian English immersion program (IEIP) of Kampung Inggris Pare and to investigate the innovative methods of teaching speaking as a communicative approach in the IEIP at Kampung Inggris Pare. This qualitative study with a micro-ethnography approach was conducted in four English course institutions by associating ten students and four teachers as participants. By having the initial interviews, the results revealed that most students perceived learning English at formal schools as unsatisfied. In comparison, the two months of observation in “the daffodils, Mr. Bob, Kresna, and Peace” English course institutions found that the teachers taught speaking by integrating the other skills and utilizing some sources. They could regulate and deliver the materials attractively based on their methods. The communicative methods employed namely teaching speaking through writing practice (TSWP), teaching speaking through listening practice (TSLP), and teaching speaking through visual media or pictures (TSVM). This study supports students learning English at the IEIP because it fits the purpose of communicative goals, which directs the students’ success.

Abstract

The ability to apply correct and appropriate academic writing becomes a crucial requirement in composing scientific papers. Many researchers suggested that the intensity of reading and writing habits have a significant impact and determines students’ ability to put ideas in writing. This study aimed to identify the main challenges faced by postgraduate students of Universitas Terbuka in writing and finalizing their thesis, including difficulties in creating good and correct written Indonesian language. This research employed mixed method research (MMR) with three research instruments for data collection, namely questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. There were 165 students participated in answering the questionnaire, and 24 students and 16 lecturers from 7 study programs were involved in the interviews. Thirty proposals for master’s thesis were analyzed by using a document analysis method. The research participants were purposefully selected using purposive sampling. The research findings showed that the aspects that were considered the easiest in writing the thesis are the literature review section and the conclusions and suggestions section. While the most difficult parts of the thesis were the introduction and discussion sections. The research also found that students were still very constrained in terms of good and correct written Indonesian language skills.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pengaruh strategi pembelajaran berdiferensiasi terhadap minat belajar siswa SD pada mata pelajaran matematika. Pendekatan penelitian yang digunakan yaitu kuantitatif, metode eksperimen kuasi dengan non-equivalent control group desain. Alat pengumpul data adalah angket dan lembar observasi. Teknik analisis data menggunakan analisis deskriptif untuk menggambarkan pengaruh antar variabel, serta analisis statistik untuk menguji hipotesis menggunakan uji t, yaitu independent sample t test dengan bantuan SPSS IBM 22,0 dan taraf signifikansi 0,05 atau 5%. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa nilai Sig. 0,000 < 0,05, maka dapat diinterpretasikan bahwa H0 ditolak sedangkan H1 diterima. Artinya terdapat pengaruh signifikan penerapan strategi pembelajaran berdiferensiasi terhadap minat belajar matematika pada indikator perasaan senang, keterlibatan aktif, ketertarikan, dan perhatian. Besarnya pengaruh adalah sebesar 45%, sedangkan sisanya dipengaruhi faktor lain di luar penelitian. Kesimpulan penelitian ini adalah terdapat pengaruh signifikan dari strategi pembelajaran berdiferensiasi terhadap minat belajar siswa SD pada mata pelajaran matematika.
