Abstract

Antibacterial activity of methanol extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate and residue of methanol of rambai (Baccaurea motleyana Mull. Arg.) leaves have been done. The extraction process with maceration of the rambai (B. motleyana Mull. Arg.) leaves using a methanol solvent, then proceed with fractionation using the liquid-liquid partition method to obtain the n-hexane, ethyl acetate and residual methanol fractions. Based on the results of phytochemical screening of secondary metabolites contained in the total methanol extract contains triterpenoid, steroid, phenolic and flavonoid compounds. The n-hexane fraction contains flavonoid and steroid compounds, whereas the ethyl acetate contains flavonoid and phenolic, and residual methanol fractions contains flavonoid, phenolic and triterpenoid compounds. Based on the results of the antibacterial activity test on the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes and Escherichia coli, the values of methanol extract, ethyl acetate fraction and the residue of methanol fraction of the leaves B. motleyana Mull. Arg. for Propionibacterium acnes has a MIC value of 4% and Escherichia coli bacteria at 8%. From the results of the antibacterial activity test it can be concluded that the methanol extract, ethyl acetate and residue of methanol fraction have antibacterial activity against the Propionibacterium acnes KCCM 41747 and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922.

Abstract

Endophytic bacteria is a bacteria that live in plant tissues without disrupt the plant's life cycle. This research aims to isolate endophytic bacteria from okra fruit (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench). Before isolation, okra fruit was sterilized by the outer surface with aquadest, 5.25% NaClO and 95% ethanol. The okra fruit sample is then cut and the inside of the okra fruit is cultured in a nutrient agar (NA). The results of this test indicate that there are endophytic bacteria that grow characterized by the presence of turbid areas around the sample. The results of isolation of endophytic bacteria using the method of stocking cup were obtained by 28 isolates of endophytic bacteria.

Abstract

Synthesis of silver nanoparticles has been carried out using AgNO3 solution as precursor with wuluh star fruit extract as bioreductant and reacted under the sunlight. The synthesized silver nanoparticles were tested for its sunscreen activity. The synthesized has been done with optimation of AgNO3 precursor and bioreductant. Based on absorbances value using UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, it is shown that silver nanoparticles from 1,5 mM AgNO3 and 25% (v/v) extract are more stable than the other variation for 4 days. The characterization of silver nanoparticles using Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and Particle Size Analyzer (PSA) instrument result shows the morphology of rounded silver nanoparticles with diverse sizes at range 6,9 – 27,7 nm, and with average particle size of 14,8 nm. Particle Size Analyzer (PSA) instrument shows the distribution of silver nanoparticles at range under 100 nm. Sunscreen activity of silver nanoparticles shows the SPF value of 44,14 with ultra protection type and on high level. The SPF value obtained indicates that silver nanoparticles can be applied as sunscreen.

Abstract

Antioxidant activity test of a combination of methanol extracts of meat remek leaves (Hemigraphis colorata w. bull) and kratom leaves (Mitragyna speciosa Korth) using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) silencing method with vitamin C as a positive control was analysed by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The methanol extract of remek leaves contains flavonoids, triterpenoids/steroids and phenolic compound while the methanol extract of kratom leaves contains triterpenoids, flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins and phenolic. The combination of the two extracts gave the highest % inhibition in the 1:1 ratio. The IC50 values of methanol extracts of meat remek leaves, kratom leaves are 70.61; 33.43 ppm indicating antioxidant activity in the strong and very strong categories and the combination is 38.08 indicating the combination index is strong antagonis

Abstract

The use of chitosan from maggot (Hermetia illucens) exuvia as an edible coating for tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum) and an edible film with honey added as an antibacterial agent was investigated. This study aimed to determine the yield of chitosan from black soldier fly (BSF, Hermetia illucens) maggot exuviae as an edible coating. The chitosan was produced from chitin by deacetylation, and its effect on the weight loss and vitamin C levels of tomatoes for 7 days after treatment was investigated. The chitosan coating was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The antibacterial activity was evaluated using a disk diffusion method. The result showed that by deacetylation, conversion of chitin produced chitosan with a yield of 72% and a deacetylation degree of 75.05%. The chitosan coating significantly affected the weight loss of tomatoes, with the best concentration being 2%. However, the treatment did not significantly affect the decrease in vitamin C levels. The edible chitosan film from BSF maggot exuviae with added honey had a thickness, water content, and water vapor transmission rate of 0.156 mm, 16.9913%, and 30.45 g/m2/24 hours, respectively. SEM characterization showed a relatively dense surface structure, which was slightly smooth and porous. Regarding antibacterial activity, the edible chitosan film inhibited Staphylococcus aureus with an inhibition zone of 10.37 mm; however, Escherichia coli was not inhibited. These results suggest that chitosan from BSF maggot exuviae has potential as an effective edible coating for reducing weight loss in tomatoes despite showing limited antibacterial properties.

Abstract

Phanera semibifida Roxb. var. semibifida, commonly known as the butterfly root plant, is one of the plants frequently used by various indigenous tribes in Kalimantan as a traditional medicinal plant. This study was conducted to identify the secondary metabolite compounds, toxicity level, and anti-inflammatory activity of the plant. Extraction of the stem of the butterfly root plant was carried out using the maceration method with methanol as the solvent, followed by partitioning with n-hexane and ethyl acetate. Phytochemical screening of the stem was performed using Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). Toxicity testing was conducted using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT), and anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated based on protein denaturation inhibition in vitro using a ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer. The crude extract of the stem was found to contain alkaloids, triterpenoids, steroids, flavonoids, and phenolics; the n-hexane fraction contained triterpenoids and steroids; the ethyl acetate fraction contained alkaloids, triterpenoids, steroids, flavonoids, and phenolics, while the aqueous fraction contained alkaloids, flavonoids, and phenolics. The toxicity levels (LC₅₀) of the crude extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, and aqueous fraction were 57.45; 158.04; 42.34; and 72.88 µg/mL, respectively, indicating toxic activity against Artemia salina L. larvae. The anti-inflammatory activity levels (IC₅₀) of the crude extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, and aqueous fraction were 124.95 µg/mL (moderate category); 161.27 µg/mL (moderate category); 99.15 µg/mL (strong category); and 143.44 µg/mL (moderate category), respectively. These results indicate that the stem of the butterfly root plant (Phanera semibifida Roxb. var. semibifida) contains bioactive compounds and has potential as a natural anti-inflammatory agent.
