Abstract

Comprehensive information regarding the reproduction, early development, and growth of larvae is very important in the efforts of captive breeding and reintroduction of endangered fish species. One of the species that is starting to be threatened is the Arfak rainbowfish, Melanotaenia arfakensis which is already in the vulnerable category and its information is still relatively limited. Therefore, this study was conducted to describe the spawning activity, early development, and growth of the larvae of this rainbow fish species under laboratory conditions. Experiments on a laboratory scale were carried out in March-September 2017. The fish used came from the Nimbai Stream. A total of three pairs of individual males and females ranging in size from 46.5 to 60.1 mm were selected for treatment. However, only one pair was successfully observed spawning activity completely. Spawning takes place between morning and noon in three spawning periods. In each period, spawning lasts between 8 and 11 days. Between spawning periods takes 14 to 22 days. After fertilization, the eggs are attached with filaments to the spawning substrate and placed at a depth of 7.3-24.3 cm from the surface of the water. One group of eggs spawned consists of 78-116 eggs with a diameter range between 1.05 and 136 mm. The eggs hatch in a period of 4 to 10 days. The body length of the newly hatched larvae ranges from 4.13-4.40 mm and will reach a size of 7.85 mm with a survival rate of 48.1% after 41 days. The results of this study found several advantages from the characteristics of spawning and growth in the early stages that are useful for captive breeding efforts and reintroduction of this rainbowfish to their natural habitat. Thus, its population in the Prafi River system can be maintained.

Abstract

Marine tourism is a type of special interest tourism, namely by managing and utilizing marine and coastal landscapes, both those that are managed directly such as swimming, boating, snorkeling, diving, or indirectly such as picnics and beach sports. Nusmapi Island has the potential to be developed as a marine tourism object which has the potential for waters and coral reefs that are in good condition. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the level of public perception and the socio-economic conditions of the local community on Nusmapi Island. In October-November 2020 this research was carried out on Nusmapi Island, Manokwari Regency. The descriptive exploratory method is by conducting a survey to the research location. The data collected were analyzed descriptively by tabulating and displayed in the form of pictures, tables, and graphs to provide an explanation of the information obtained in this study. The relationship between the level of perception and socio-economic and cultural aspects of society was analyzed by multiple regression. The variables of age, gender, education, main occupation, and additional work were positively correlated with community perception, while length of stay and ethnic origin were negatively correlated with perceived level. The correlation value between the 7 independent variables (X1-X7) and the dependent variable (Y) is 0.839 which is included in the very strong category. The value of the coefficient of determination 61% explains the variables in the resulting regression model, the remaining 39% is influenced by other factors outside the model. Age is a significant social variable on people's perceptions of the development of marine tourism on Nusmapi Island. The community as the main component in development has an important role in developing local potential that comes from nature, socio-culture or improving the community's economy through the development of marine tourism.

Abstract

The habitat ontogeny of arfak rainbowfish (Melanotaenia arfakensis Allen) in Nimbai and Aimasi streams, Prafi river system were studied from June to December 2007. Sampling was carried out monthly in four different habitat types using hand net. Slow littoral and medium littoral are two habitat types which characterized by slowly water velocity, availability of submerged vegetation and warmer temperature, however the run and pool areas have higher water velocity and dissolve oxygen. The former habitats are essential for all developed stages, i.e. feeding, spawning and nursing of this species. On the other hand, the later habitat types particularly were only for young and adult fish, due to their swimming abilities as well as maximize of oxygen uptake. In order to maintain the population of this species, conservation is needed to all of their natural habitats for continuing their life cycles.

Abstract

Sources of activity in Dorei Bay come from the Sanggeng market, the Wosi market, the port, the PLTD (Diesel Power Plant), hospitals, hotels, and residential areas. The seagrass system has a function as a food provider, as primary productivity in waters, dampers the arrival of waves, a place for growth and development of biota and sediment traps. Research and information on the accumulation of heavy metals in seagrass, especially Cymodocea rotundata are still very limited, especially in Doreri Bay. This study aims to describe the accumulation of heavy metals in seagrass Cymodocea rotundata, including leaves, roots, and rhizome, comparing the accumulation of heavy metals in seagrass Cymodocea rotundata each location as well as knowing the pollution index of each location. The research was conducted in Doreri Bay, Manokwari, West Papua in August 2018. The sampling locations for Cymodocea rotundata seagrass were around the waters of Pelayaran, Wosi, Yankarwar, Anggrem, and Nusmapi Island. The results showed that the highest Cu concentrations were described from each location, which ranged from 18.75 to 28.64 (mg.kg-1), followed by heavy metal Pb ranging from 0.46-19.31 (mg.kg-1), then logm weight of Cd ranged from 1.11-4.97 (mg.kg-1) and the lowest Cr6 + concentration in each location ranged from 0.20 -0.52 (mg.kg-1). The percentage of metal concentrations in the roots and rhizomes is 50%, it can even reach 82.64%, namely Pb metal at Yankarwar Beach. Meanwhile, the metal concentration in the leaf area ranged between 17.36-50.00% and the highest proportion was found in Pb metal at the Pelayaran location and Cr6 + metal at the Wosi location. The calculation results of the Metal poluttion Index (MPI) for heavy metals Pb, Cd, Cu, and Cr6 + show that the highest heavy metal index of 5 locations is on Anggrem Beach and the lowest is at Pelayaran Beach

Abstract

ABSTRACTSeven fish species from seven families are found during this study. The most common species found are Melanotaenia irianjaya (9/10 sites). No introduced species were found in any of the sites. Species richness ranged from 1-5 species per site and was highest in Aikrer Usem stream and Aisen stream. This difference between sites is partially attributed to position in order system and fishing effort. Higher order which is a combination of several creeks provided more diverse microhabitat than the lower ones, thus supporting higher fish diversity. A total of three species (42.9%) which endemic to southern Vogelkop Peninsular and northern Bomberai. Most of species are found including carnivorous, with diet consisted of aquatic and terrestrial insects, and the other benthic invertebrates. The presence of prey group is very closely related to the availability of riparian vegetation in the streams and creeks. Recommendations will include implementation of good forest management in the watershed to maintain the pattern of hydrology and water discharge in natural conditions, and also protection of riparian zones that exist as a source of energy for the stream ecosystem and as a buffer against an input from the terrestrial.

Abstract

ABSTRACTArfak rainbow fish, Melanotaenia arfakensis is an endemic fish on several river systems in the northeastern part of the Vogelkop peninsula. This study aims to describe the growth, age at first maturity, and sexual dimorphism of this endemic fish on the Nimbai Stream and the Aimasi Stream, the Prafi River system. The fish were caught using handnet, then were measured their standard length and individual weight. Data were analyzed to estimated growth patterns, von Bertalanffy's growth rate, age at first maturity and sexual dimorphism characteristics. The results showed that male growth patterns varied, with a tendency of the increase in body length faster than that of body weight (negative allometric patterns) with b values ranging from 2.886 to 3.132. On the other hand, the female individuals had positive allometric patterns (b values ranged from 3.062 to 3.378). The growth rate (K) of male body length was faster (0.165-0.174) than that of female individuals (0.159-0.163). Male individuals reached the first maturity condition earlier (at age of 1.83-2.18 years) than female individuals (at age of 2.49-2.64 years). Sexual characteristics between the sexes are related to body height starting to appear when fish are of a standard length of larger than 18.22 mm or when male fish begin to approach the time of the first sexual maturity. Understanding of growth, age, and the characteristics of the sexual dimorphism of endemic fish has an important meaning in monitoring population conditions and for conservation efforts in their natural habitat.

Abstract

The gastropod community is very important as a component in the food chain and decomposition in mangrove ecosystems. This study aims to describe the structure of the gastropod community (species composition, distribution pattern, density, and diversity index) in the mangrove ecosystem on Padaidori Island, Padaido Islands, Biak Numfor Regency. There were two stations selected for sampling. The sampling period for gastropods took place in August-September 2021 using the line transect and quadrat method. Sampling of gastropods was carried out at low tide. Results Based on the research, there were 12 gastropod species belonging to six families (Cerithiidae, Ellobiidae, Littorinidae, Muricidae, Neritidae, dan Potamididae). Generally, the species were found in the bottom substrate and roots of mangrove vegetation, except for Littoraria scabra which was also found on the stems and leaves of mangroves. High density was found in L. scabra (3.85-6.24 ind.m-2) and Cerithium coralium (4.18-4.36 ind./m-2), the density for each station was 12.73 ind.m-2 (station 1) and 9.97 ind.m-2 (station 2). The distribution pattern of gastropod species is generally clustered. The index of diversity, evenness, and dominance at the two stations was 1.271-1.344, 0.579-0.646, and 0.334-0.366. This condition illustrates that the gastropod community at both stations is relatively stable. Various parameters in this gastropod community can change due to disturbances and utilization activities. Therefore, this information about the gastropod community can be used as an indicator for monitoring changes in the condition of the mangrove ecosystem.

Abstract

The spotted scat, Scatophagus argus (Linnaeus, 1766) is a component of the estuarine ecosystem with little reproductive information. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of describing aspects of the reproductive biology of this fish species through sex ratio, size at first sexual maturity, and spawning season. The collection of fish samples from the waters of Pabean Bay was carried out every month between January and December 2015. The fishing gear used were sero and gill nets. A total of 428 individuals were collected consisting of larval, juvenile, pre-adult, and adult stages. The ratio of the number of male and female individuals is relatively balanced (1.00 : 1.05). The size of the male individual's first sexual maturity at a total length of 102.95 mm and 112.44 mm in female individuals. The composition of gonadal maturity level and gonadal maturity index value indicated that there was reproductive activity that lasted throughout the year and increased in January-February and September-November. Information on reproductive aspects obtained in this study can be used as a basis for the management of this fish resource, including through recommendations for closing locations and fishing times.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the distribution of length to weight, sex ratio, gonad maturity level of julung fish (Hemiramphus lutkei) traded in Sanggeng and Borobudur Manokwari fish markets, West Papua. Research data collection was carried out for ± 1 month, namely February - March 2021, using a descriptive method. The number of fish samples collected was 542 fish. The results of the analysis of the size distribution of julung-julung fish during sampling for body length ranged from 219 – 355 mm for males and 215 -380 mm for females, with a body weight range of 27-53 grams for males and 30-65 grams. The sex ratio analysis of julung julung fish was obtained for males (321 fish) and females (221 fish) significantly different, which means this ratio deviated from the ideal value of 1:1. Based on the results of the analysis show that the value of X2 -count > X2 -table, then H0 is rejected, which means the sex ratio of male and female fish is not balanced from TKG I-VII for males and TKG II-VII for females and mostly found in TKG III conditions. The size of the male julung fish when the gonads first mature was estimated at a length of about 230-260 mm and the female at a size of 250-280 mm. The average Gonad Somatic Index (GSI) of female julung fish was 0.0876 and the standard error was 0.0061 with a GSI range of 0.0092 – 0.7574. The relation- ship between TKG and GSI shows that the increasing stage of fish gonad maturity will be followed by an increase in the value of the fish gonadal index.
