Abstract

Cymodocea rotundata is a seagrass species that occupy habitats in the intertidal zone. The ability of this species to occupy the intertidal zone is thought to be related to its particular morphological adaptations in response to fluctuations in local aquatic environmental conditions. This study aims to describe habitat conditions, distribution related to density, morphological differences, and growth among C. rotundata seagrass stands in the upper, middle, and lower intertidal zones of Yankarwar Beach, Manokwari, West Papua. Transects and quadrats methods were used to collect seagrass samples, so information on their distribution and density could be obtained. The seagrass samples collected were also analyzed (counted and measured) for their morphological characters including the number of leaves, leaf length, leaf width, horizontal sheath internode length, root length, stand weight, leaf weight, rhizome weight, and root weight. Seagrass growth was obtained by marking the leaves and observing them for 10 days. The results of this study indicate that the conditions of the physicochemical parameters of the intertidal waters are still suitable for the growth of this seagrass species. The highest density was found in the upper intertidal zone (3,161.73 stands.m-2) and followed by the middle intertidal zone (962.04 stands.m-2). Although most of the morphological characters of seagrasses and seagrass parts were relatively the same between the three intertidal zones, larger leaf widths and lengths of horizontal rhizome internodes were found in stands in the two upper intertidal zones. Differences in growth as reflected by the increase in leaf length and dry leaf weight also showed greater values in the upper and middle intertidal zones. This condition shows the adaptability of this seagrass species to variations in environmental parameter conditions in the middle and upper intertidal zone. In addition, the results of this study indicate the presence of C. rotundata, especially in the intertidal aquatic environment which has an important ecological role, including as a substrate stabilizer. Therefore, this vegetation conservation effort is very important. Keywords: intertidal zone, morphological adaptation, seagrass growth

Abstract

Seagrass has a very important role in reducing CO2 emissions by binding carbon. Therefore, this study aims to describe biomass and estimate carbon storage of seagrass Cymodocea rotundata in Rendani Beach, Manokwari Regency, West Papua. The method used is purposive sampling using three transect lines and 30 squares measuring 30 cm x 30 cm. Biomass measurements were carried out on all squares of observations while for carbon content analysis was carried out on three squares in each transect. Carbon analysis was performed using the ashing method or Loss on Ignition. The results showed that the density of C. rotundata ranged from 44.44 - 4877.78 stands/m² and the dry biomass ranged from 13.33 - 873.33 gbk C/m². The results of the analysis showed the relationship between density and dry biomass of C. rotundata following the equation B = 196.13 + 1.6221K. Carbon estimates for this species range from 65.07 - 170.27 gbk C/m². Seagrass vegetation has an important role in storing carbon, however its presence in coastal waters has experienced many disturbances as a result of anthropogenic activities so that conservation efforts need to be made. Keywords: Cymodocea rotundata, density, biomass, ashing method, carbon storage.

Abstract

ABSTRACT  Turtles are reptiles that spend most of their lives in marine waters and will return to land to release their eggs at the location where they were hatched. However, changes in land use that cause damage to coastal habitats, catching turtles on land and taking their eggs as well as the threat of predators can cause a decrease in turtle populations. One effort to overcome this is through hatchling breeding activities as was done in Meinyumfoka Village, Manokwari Regency. The objective of the activity is to support community-based conservation through the provision of supporting facilities and community awareness. This activity begins with a site survey, observation and assistance with needs in the captive area, analysis of material needs and costs, organizational activities, and realization of a work plan. This activity was carried out in November-December 2021 in Meinyumfoka Village. The results achieved were the availability of one hatchling hatchery facility measuring 300 cm x 170 cm x 60 cm, three posters for turtle conservation socialization media, and one tourist gazebo. The addition of facilities to the turtle hatchery ecotourism area is expected to bring economic benefits to the surrounding community and also provide benefits for turtle conservation. Abstract

Manokwari coastal waters are one of the coastal areas that experience very rapid development of development activities from year to year. This condition allows the input of waste such as heavy metal cadmium (Cd) into the waters of Manokwari. This research was conducted in the coastal area of Manokwari (BLK Beach, Lemon Island, and Tanjung Manggewa) for three months (February-April 2020). The purpose of this study was to describe the concentration of heavy metal cadmium (Cd) in Gastropod Conus on the Manokwari Coast and to determine the relationship between heavy metal content of cadmium (Cd) in Conus with shell size, wet weight, and dry weight. Data analysis includes Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS), linear regression, and descriptive analysis. Based on the research results obtained, the average content of cadmium in Conus in Manokwari waters is 0.06-0.22 mg/kg. The heavy metal content in Conus is still below the specified threshold so it is still fit for consumption. The relationship between the heavy metal content of Cd in Conus with shell length, wet weight, and dry weight are positive with the regression equation successively y = -0.065 + 0.002x, y = 0.054 + 0.005x, and y = 0.061 + 0.014x which shows that the content Heavy metal Cd in Conus is influenced by shell length, wet weight, and dry weight.

Abstract

Pabean Bay is an estuary waters in which salinity fluctuations occur. This fluctuation requires that the fish living in this location have the ability to adapt. This research is a preliminary study that aims to identify the diversity of fish species in these waters. The study was conducted from January to June 2015 with sampling at intervals of one month. Fishing was carried out at three stations, namely the inside which is the estuary of the river, the middle part and the outside of the estuary to get a representative sample. The fishing gear used are sero, and trammel nets. During the study, it was found that 78 species of fish were included in 39 families. The number of species in each sampling varies. Among the fish found were mainly the family Gobiidae (10 species) and the Family Leiognathidae, Lutjanidae, Sciaenidae and Tetraodontidae (four species each). Several fish species were found in the larval, juvenile and adult stages, and these conditions illustrate the importance of estuaries in the survival of the fish life cycle.

Abstract

Pressure on coastal water conditions in Manokwari caused by human activities can affect the morphometric adaptation of seagrass plants, one of which is Halophila ovalis. The study aimed to analyze the morphometric differences of Halophila ovalis caused by differences in environmental factors on several coastal areas in Manokwari. A total of 20 samples of H. ovalis were taken from each of the beaches studied and then four morphological characters were measured. Morphometric data of H. ovalis between locations were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), then continued with non-multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis. The results showed that there were changes in the morphometrics of H. ovalis from the four research locations. Specifically, it was found that the H. ovalis with the most different morphology came from Rendani Beach. NMDS analysis shows that the morphometrics of H. ovalis on Rendani Beach are separate from  from Yenkarwar, Wosi and Saubeba Beaches. The NMDS model was explain 74.19% of the morphometric diversity influenced by environmental parameters such as water temperature, substrate conditions, pH, salinity, and dissolved oxygen levels. We concluded that there had been morphometric changes in the seagrass H. ovalis in several coastal waters in Manokwari.

Abstract

Genetic diversity is one level of biodiversity that is very importan for the resilience of biota in the face of environmental pressures such as cilmater change. However, information on the genetic diversity of red snapper in Kaimana water is still very limited. This study determines the genetic diversity of red snapper (Lutjanus erythropterus) in Kaimana waters, West Papua, to support conservation and sustainable management. The methods used include PCR, DNA sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis using MEGA11, with samples taken from the Kaimana fish market. The results of this study show differences in the percentage of adenine and guanine in sample B81.01, with an average codon composition of 218 codons, where UCU(G) Serine has the highest percentage of 13.8% and RSCU 2.38%, and 20 types of amino acids were detected. Lutjanus erythropterus has 3 haplotypes, with 2 universal haplotypes and 1 specific. In Kaimana waters, the haplotype diversity (hd) value is 0.50000 and the nucleotide diversity (π) is 0.00091, which is influenced by the large population size and high migration ability.
