Abstract

Ideally, tropical countries have great potential in agricultural resources, but the fact is that the agricultural world in most tropical countries, especially in rural areas, is often hampered in development due to many factors, including an understanding of various problems and governance systems that still do not work optimally. Basically, sustainable agriculture (SA) can be realized optimally if the dimensions, especially socio-economic-environment, are able to run synergistically. Socio-economic functions supported by a conducive environment are key in efforts to realize SA. In this study, we have conducted a Systematic Literature Review which aims to analyze various problems in an effort to improve SA performance based on the synergy of these dimensions, especially for the case of food crop agriculture. We emphasize attention to the phenomenon of social entrepreneurship (SE) which of course demands the synergy of existing key dimensions. In addition, we also conducted a literature review that discusses the phenomenon of multi-helix implementation to improve the performance of a managerial system involving multi-stakeholders. We find that the literature describing multi-helix models (e.g. penta-helix) to support the performance of SA systems is still very rare. Even throughout the search that we have done, there have been no reports that specifically discuss the penta-helix (PH) model, especially in the case of food crop agriculture. The results of this study are expected to be a guide for academics and all interested parties in understanding the SE phenomenon more deeply and the potential for PH implementation, especially for the case of food crop agriculture.

Abstract

This study investigates the dynamics of household food sovereignty within matrilineal communities in West Sumatra, Indonesia, by analyzing the role of remittances managed by female household heads. Anchored in the theoretical framework of food sovereignty and embedded livelihood systems, this research applies a descriptive-quantitative method using Susenas microdata, with a focus on household structure, remittance sources, and food access indicators. The findings reveal that elderly women, especially widows, serve as primary decision-makers in allocating remittances to meet household food needs. While matrilineal norms grant symbolic authority to women, persistent food insecurity in remittance receiving households particularly in rural areas indicates a disconnect between financial inflows and food system resilience. This study reframes remittance not merely as monetary support, but as a strategic vehicle for advancing household-level food sovereignty. The findings align with Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and underscore the need for context-sensitive food policies that recognize gendered household roles in resource governance.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of the Human Development Index (HDI), poverty rate, and unemployment rate on economic growth across Indonesian provinces during the period 2020–2023. Using secondary data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the analysis employs a Fixed Effect Model (FEM) with cluster-robust standard errors to address heteroskedasticity and autocorrelation in panel data. The findings reveal that HDI has a positive and significant effect on economic growth, indicating that improvements in education, health, and overall human capabilities play a key role in stimulating regional economic performance. Meanwhile, the poverty rate shows no significant impact on economic growth, suggesting that short-term economic fluctuations are not immediately sensitive to poverty levels. In contrast, the unemployment rate exhibits a negative and significant effect, demonstrating that higher unemployment reduces productive capacity and dampens economic activity at the provincial level. Overall, the study highlights the critical importance of enhancing human development and strengthening labor market conditions to promote sustainable and inclusive economic growth in Indonesia.

Abstract

The food crop subsector plays a crucial role in regional development by contributing to food security, farmer welfare, and rural economic stability. West Pasaman Regency, one of the main food production centers in West Sumatra, has significant potential but faces challenges such as productivity fluctuations, land conversion, and socio-economic issues among farmer households. This research, titled Analysis of the Development of Food Crops in Supporting Sustainable Agriculture in West Pasaman Regency, aims to identify the economic, social, and environmental conditions of the subsector and formulate holistic recommendations for supporting sustainable agriculture. The study employs secondary data analyzed descriptively, quantitatively, and qualitatively, using trend analysis and Shift Share to evaluate competitiveness. Results indicate that the food crop subsector in West Pasaman is projected to grow by 1.67% in 2024, higher than the provincial rate of 0.57%. The positive Competitive Effect suggests a local competitive advantage. However, unstable rice GDP and productivity, an increasing poor population, and ongoing land conversion remain threats to sustainability. Based on the analysis, strategic recommendations focus on three pillars: (1) economic—boosting productivity through eco-friendly technology, diversification, and downstream processing; (2) social—strengthening farmer institutions, regenerating agricultural labor, and ensuring food-based social protection; and (3) environmental—protecting productive land, conserving resources, and promoting sustainable cultivation practices. Overall, the development of the food crop subsector must adopt a holistic approach to enhance regional competitiveness and achieve sustainable development goals.

Abstract

Regional development inequality remains a major challenge in India, given the country’s high level of social, economic, and geographical diversity. Despite sustained national economic growth, the benefits of development have not been evenly distributed across regions, particularly between urban and rural areas. This study aims to analyze the role of development planning strategies in reducing regional development disparities in India. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using thematic content analysis of policy documents and relevant scholarly literature. The data analyzed are secondary data derived from official government documents, including the Twelfth Five Year Plan and Strategy for New India @75, sectoral ministry reports, academic publications, and reports from international institutions. The findings indicate that the reduction of regional development inequality in India is strongly influenced by an integrated combination of centralized planning and decentralized governance. Centralized planning provides a national strategic framework that prioritizes inclusive growth and equitable resource allocation, ensuring greater attention to underdeveloped regions. At the same time, decentralization through the Panchayati Raj system enhances policy effectiveness by aligning national objectives with local needs and improving community participation in development planning. Furthermore, targeted programs for backward regions, infrastructure development, and the expansion of social services have significantly contributed to improving rural livelihoods, reducing unemployment, and narrowing regional disparities. Infrastructure development, in particular, plays a critical role in enhancing connectivity, lowering transaction costs, and expanding access to economic opportunities. However, the study also finds that disparities persist due to variations in institutional capacity, governance quality, and administrative efficiency across regions. The study concludes that reducing regional development inequality requires not only well-designed planning policies but also effective implementation, strong local institutions, and sustained community engagement.

Abstract

This research aims to examine aspects of human capital that influence the performance of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Drawing on an extensive review of literature from indexed journal databases, the study focused on identifying key factors related to "human capital" and "MSME performance." The comprehensive exploration revealed a multifaceted relationship between human capital aspects and MSME performance, unveiling pivotal influencers. The identified aspects of human capital found to exert a substantial influence on MSME performance encompass a wide spectrum. These include skills and competencies, education and training, employee motivation and engagement, employee health and welfare, innovation and creativity, communication and collaboration, digital skills, work ethics and organizational values, entrepreneurship and sense of ownership, as well as organizational diversity. This research contributes valuable insights for policymakers aiming to enhance the human capital capabilities of MSME entrepreneurs. By addressing these specific dimensions, policymakers can formulate targeted strategies to uplift the human capital landscape within MSMEs. Consequently, this targeted approach is anticipated to render MSMEs more productive, sustainable, and equipped to venture into international markets.
