Abstract

Cancer is the second-highest worldwide health problem that hasmortality rate after cardiovascular disease. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are the most frequently used treatments by patients with known side effects on dental and oral health, such as brittle teeth, bleeding gums, and dry mouth, making it difficult for patients to perform therapy and lower the body's resistance. This community service (PkM) was carried out boldly in the Cancer Survivor Community 'Kita Bahagia' to increase knowledge about maintaining dental and oral health after therapy. This PkM was attended by 55 participants for 3 hours. The material given is about the impact of post-therapy on the hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity and maintaining dental and oral health regularly in the form of power points, e-flyers, and interested videos. The training was evaluated by undertaking a pre-post test containing 20 oral health questions. There was an increase in participants' knowledge of 17.28% within an average pre-test score of 61.27% to 78.55% in the post-test. The participants were very enthusias, as seen from the many questions asked during the live activities and via chat zoom. Within this activity, we hoped that the dental and oral health of post-therapy cancer survivors can be well maintained with good application and to other community members, families, and the wider community.

Abstract

Periodontal disease has a high prevalence in the world and Indonesia. There are 2 types of periodontal disease, such as gingivitis and periodontitis, which can be caused by pathogenic bacteria such as Fusobacterium nucleatum and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. Minimizing periodontal disease can be done by brushing, flossing, scaling, and using mouthwash that contains antibacterial. Rosella (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) is an herbal plant that contains antibacterial properties, so it can be used as an additional therapy to minimize periodontal disease. The research was conducted in the MiCore laboratory FKG Usakti with the method in this study using an in vitro laboratory experiment using a biofilm assay test with a concentration of 1 g/mL, 0.50 g/mL, 0.25 g/mL, 0.125 g/mL, 0.0625 g/mL, 0.0312 g/mL, 0.015 g/mL. The extract was distributed into well plates, stained with crystal violet, incubated for 1 hour, 6 hours, and 24 hours, and then counted using a microplate reader. The results showed that extract concentrations starting from 0.015 g/mL at an incubation period of 1 hour, concentrations starting from 0.125 g/mL at an incubation period of 6 hours, and concentrations starting from 0.0625 g/mL at an incubation period of 24 hours were proven to inhibit bacterial growth and proved to be more effective than 0.2% chlorhexidine with significantly different results (p0.05). It can be concluded that Rosella extract can inhibit the growth of multispecies bacteria Fusobacterium nucleatum and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans.

Abstract

Nutrition has an important role during the growth and development of children in general, especially in the oral cavity. Children who are malnourished can cause abnormalities in the hard tissue of the teeth and periodontal. Abnormalities in the oral cavity can disrupt masticatory function, which can affect food intake. Parental knowledge is important in choosing food for the family, because it can affect the nutritional status of children and their families. This Community Service (PkM) were attended by 36 participants from the PKK mobilization team, Cideng, Central Jakarta. The materials provided are the effect of balanced nutrition on general health, the effect of nutrition on the tooth supporting tissue, the impact and prevention of poor dental health and good oral health care in power points, videos and posters. The results of the PkM training were evaluated by a pre-post test using a google form. The evaluation results showed an increase in participants' knowledge scores from an average pre-test score of 45.78 to an average post-test score of 82.19. It is hoped that this PkM activity can increase the knowledge of the PKK mobilization team, so that in the future they can provide education to the public regarding the influence of balanced nutrition on general health and the oral cavity as well as how to maintain oral health.

Abstract

Introduction: The destruction that occurs in peri-implantitis, if left untreated, can eventually lead to dental implant failure. Autogenous growth factor is prepared by centrifugation of whole blood samples and has been widely applied in wound healing and tissue regeneration. This platelet concentrate can be used alone or in combination with other biomaterials for soft tissue healing or bone formation. CGF (concentrated growth factor) is a derivative of PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) and has the same 3-dimensional structural complex as PRF. However, it contains more growth factors than PRF and has a more rigid fibrinogen structure. Aims: The objective of this systematic review is to obtain scientific data related to the use of concentrated growth factors in peri-implantitis treatment in order to avoid dental implant failure. Method: A total of 5,339 studies were initially identified from the three databases (Wiley, Researchgate and Google Scholar) between January 2018 and July 2023. Result: Three randomised clinical trials (RCTs) were selected for analysis. Conclusion: Concentrated Growth Factor (CGF) can be employed in combination with bone graft material for the treatment of peri-implantitis, with the objective to prevent dental implant failure that may result from peri-implantitis. However, it is not the sole recommended approach.

Abstract

Periodontitis is a chronic, multifactorial, inflammatory disease, associated with plaque biofilms and characterized by the progressive destruction of the tooth-supporting structures. Periodontal diseases can increase the inflammatory response in patients, which might exacerbate the systemic symptoms and clinical course of coronavirus (COVID-19). The potential association of periodontitis and COVID-19 severity can be explained by the alteration in the expression of cellular receptors enhancing the virulence of SARS-CoV-2 and by periodontal pockets acting as viral reservoirs. These associations between periodontitis and COVID could be due to the fact that both diseases share common immune pathways such as the NF-κB pathway, NLRP3/IL-1β pathway, and IL-6 signaling pathway as well as common risk factors such as gender, lifestyle, and comorbidities. This suggests that the two diseases may be linked through the same genetic pathway.

Abstract

Maintaining the dental and oral health of their children is greatly aided by mothers' awareness of dental emergencies. Dental emergencies might involve issues that need to be treated right once, like infections, chipped teeth, or damaged teeth. Aloe vera is a natural substance with remarkable healing qualities, which is why it is used in first aid for wounds. Aloe vera gel, which is readily extracted contains anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant substances that can help relieve pain, minimize swelling, and prevent infection. In Cideng Village, Gambir District, Central Jakarta, PKK women received counseling on handling wounds with aloe vera plants and dental trauma emergencies to increase their knowledge and abilities in dealing with dental trauma problems and wound healing with aloe vera. Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Trisakti Team from the dentistry education study program, the dentistry profession study program, and the master of dentistry study program completed this Community Service activity. Counseling and instructional media, including power point, videos, and posters, are used as part of community service projects. Through exams administered prior to counseling and compared with those administered following counseling, an increase in knowledge of tooth trauma crises and wound treatment using Aloe vera was gained in this activity. This counseling exercise is a crucial step in learning more about using Aloe vera to heal wounds from oral and dental injuries. It is necessary to keep taking a structural approach to the community. It is anticipated that social media counseling would expand its influence inside the community.

Abstract

The surface roughness of an implant material (titanium alloy) is an important factor in optimizing osseointegration. Various efforts have been made to optimize the roughness of implant materials, such as acid etching. Previous research showed etching with sulfuric acid ((H2SO4)) at a temperature of 60 °C for 60 minutes could increase roughness. However, further research is needed regarding the concentration of H2SO4 that can optimize surface roughness. This research aimed to determine the concentration of H2SO4 that can be used to obtain optimal roughness. This study used a pre-test and post-test group design by immersing titanium alloy plates in a solution of saline water (negative control), 12.17 M HCl (positive control), and (H2SO4) at various concentrations, namely 6.94 M, 9 M, and 11.06 M for 60 minutes at 60 °C. Next, a surface roughness test and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were carried out. The research results were analyzed statistically using the Shapiro-Wilk, Wilcoxon, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney tests. The results showed that in the (H2SO4) group, there were significant differences before and after treatment (p < 0.05). The higher the concentration of (H2SO4) used, the higher the surface roughness value. The SEM test showed that the group with a higher (H2SO4) concentration had a rougher topography and more visible grooves. In conclusion, etching with (H2SO4) can increase the surface roughness of titanium alloys, and (H2SO4) at a concentration of 11.06 M led to the highest roughness value in this study.

Abstract

Background: Bacterial plaque is one of the sources of oral health problems that can cause cavities and periodontal disease. One way to minimize the risk of dental and oral diseases is to carry out good and proper plaque control. Plaque control can be supported by the use of disclosing agents that visualize bacterial plaque well so as to increase motivation and education in the community to evaluate their oral hygiene. Objectives: This article reviews the use of disclosing agents with natural ingredients as one of alternative choices that can be used to prevent harmful side effects from certain synthetic dyes, such as erythrosine. Literature review: One example of a natural ingredient that can be used as a natural dye is the red dragon fruit peel (Hylocereus polyrhizus) through the maceration method to produce a disclosing agent in the form of a gel preparation. Conclusion: After going through a series of preparation tests on the gel formulation, it was concluded that the red dragon fruit peel extract formulation has the potential as a disclosing agent to visualize bacterial plaque in the oral cavity well.
