Abstract

This study examines the effect of Project Based Learning (PjBL) on students’ learning activities and negotiation text writing skills at the tenth-grade level of SMAN 1 Pagai Utara Selatan. The research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a Solomon Four-Group Design. The sample consisted of 80 students divided into two experimental groups and two control groups. Data were collected through a learning activity questionnaire and a writing test, and analyzed using normality testing, homogeneity testing, paired sample t-test, and independent sample t-test at a 0.05 significance level. The results indicate that PjBL significantly improved students’ learning activities (p < 0.001). Within-group analysis showed a significant improvement in writing skills in the experimental group (p < 0.001). However, no statistically significant difference was found between the experimental and control groups in the posttest scores at the 5% level (p = 0.056), although the experimental group achieved a higher mean score. These findings suggest that PjBL effectively enhances learning engagement and contributes to improving negotiation text writing skills.

Abstract

Language serves as a symbolic system used by humans to communicate, express thoughts and emotions, and convey information. In the era of digital technology, social media has become an interactive space that fosters the emergence and development of new forms of language, one of which is slang. This study aims to describe the forms, functions, and meanings of slang variations found in the comment sections of YouTube channels owned by @DeddyCorbuzier and @DennySumargo. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, using documentation and observation techniques to collect user comments from January 1 to March 31, 2025. The findings reveal that the forms of slang identified include acronyms, abbreviations, phonetic spellings, borrowings from foreign languages, and the creation of new lexical items. The primary functions of slang use involve emotional expression, social critique, group identity markers, and communicative efficiency. Semantically, slang often undergoes symbolic shifts or takes on metaphorical meanings, depending on the user's social context. Abstract

This study analyzes the sociolinguistic phenomenon of mixed language use in digital preaching. The study focuses on the communication styles of two well-known preachers, Ustaz Hanan Attaki (UHA) and Ustaz Felix Siauw (UFS), on YouTube. The aim of this study is to describe the types, reasons, functions, and comparisons of mixed language use by these two figures. The approach used was descriptive qualitative, with data analysis methods consisting of speech in video lectures on their official channels. The research findings identified 72 data points related to mixed language, consisting of five types: word insertion, phrase insertion, clause insertion, word repetition, and bastering. The most common types were word insertion and clause insertion. Reasons for code-mixing include the use of more easily understood popular terms, the connection of themes to references from the Quran and Hadith, the speakers' backgrounds, and efforts to adapt to audiences from millennials and Gen Z. Functionally, code-mixing is used to facilitate communication, create a more relaxed atmosphere, and explain Islamic concepts that are difficult to find equivalents in Indonesian. Comparatively, UHA tends to use Arabic code-mixing more often for spiritual matters, while UFS uses English more for aspects of logic and modern lifestyle. The research concludes that code-mixing is a flexible sociolinguistic strategy for connecting sacred religious messages with the current social dynamics of audiences.

Abstract

The high frequency use of phone- cell and short message service has produced various forms of new words.  These words create such variation of language that needs to be interpreted.  This is so because the results of abbreviations tend to go beyond grafology, syntax, and may produce psycholinguistic impacts.  The fact that the creativity of the language users are very expressive and subjective it frequently breaks the linguistic aspects.  These inappropriate words which is caused by irregular abbreviation seems so serious that writing  instruction of Indonesian at school must be reconsidered.  The phenomenon suggests that one can easily find students’ writing which are not understood, there have been so many illogical sentences, and ineffective language.  Therefore, school teachers have to work hard to rearrange students’ activity so that their writing skills may achieve the appropriate level based on the patterns of effective sentences.Copyright © 2013 by Al-Ta'lim All right reservedDOI: 10.15548/jt.v20i3.45
