Abstract

Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) is every adverse event related to the use of a drug in humans. Geriatrics have a 7 times greater risk of developing ADR. Hypertension is the most common disease suffered by geriatric patients. The purpose of this study was to analyze the risk of ADR occurrence in geriatric hypertension patients and also to analyze the relationship of demographic data with the incidence of ADR. This study was carried out in an observational manner which was descriptive analytic with a cross sectional approach in 88 medical record samples of geriatric hypertension patients in inpatient installations using gerontoNET scores. Based on the ADR risk variable according to the gerontoNET score, there was 1 patient with ≥4 comorbid, 45 patients had heart failure, 5 patients had liver disorders, 19 patients received 6-7 drugs and 37 patients received ≥8 drugs, no patients with ADR history, and 28 patients developed kidney problems. From the results of this study, there are 37 patients who have a high risk of ADR events which are marked by gerontoNET score ≥4. Based on the correlation analysis of gender and age range on ADR risk obtained a weak relationship and no significant correlation (r = 0.116, p = 0.116; r = 0.017, p = 0.847), so that gender and age in geriatric hypertension patients are not related to the risk of ADR.

Abstract

Kedabu leaves (Sonneratia ovata Backer) are known contain secondary metabolites, one of which is phenolic, flavonoid and antioxidant activity. Phenolic, flavonoids and antioxidant are known to inhibit the tyrosinase enzyme. The tyrosinase enzyme is involved in the process of melanogenesis which produces melanin. Melanin can cause hyperpigmentation. To prevent hyperpigmentation, tyrosinase inhibitors are needed. This study aimed to test the tyrosinase enzyme inhibitor in ethanol extract, n-butanol fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, n-hexane fraction of kedabu leaf (Sonneratia ovatta Backer) using L-tyrosine as a substrate. The method used to get ethanol extract using ethanol maceration, while some fractions are obtained using the fractionation method. The test was carried out using L-tyrosine and kojic acid as a positive control with absorption measurements using microplate reader at a wavelength of 492 nm. The results showed that the best tyrosinase inhibitory activity was produced by the ethyl acetate fraction with an IC50 value of 18,82 g/mL, followed by the n-butanol fraction with an IC50 value of 24,42 g/mL, and the n-hexane fraction with an IC50 value. 28,77 g/mL, ethanol extract with an IC50 value of 99,09 with a strong category for all samples compared with kojic acid as a positive control with an IC50 value of 30,09 g/mL.

Abstract

Self-medication refers to the practice by which individuals use medicines obtained without a physician’s prescription to treat their symptoms or pain. However, errors in medication use remain common in self-medication practices; therefore, pharmacists play an important role in providing drug information. This study aimed to analyze the factors influencing the provision of drug information for self-medication by pharmacists. A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 100 pharmacists in Pekanbaru, Indonesia. Data were collected through participant observation and analyzed using t-tests and ANOVA. The analysis showed that the p-values for each candidate determinant were as follows: gender = 0.287, work experience = 0.014, secondary employment = 0.222, age = 0.022, education = 0.191, weekly working hours = 0.000, and daily working hours = 0.000. It can therefore be concluded that the determinants of pharmacists’ provision of drug information in self-medication are age, work experience, and working hours. Keywords: pharmacist; drug information provision; self-medication

Abstract

Providing drug information is a crucial component in pharmaceutical services that aim to ensure the safe and rational use of medications. However, the practice of providing information by pharmacy technicians in pharmacies is often not optimal, especially in educational aspects related to patient safety. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the behavior of pharmacy technicians in providing drug information to patients at X Network Pharmacies in Pekanbaru City. This research is a quantitative descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 32 pharmaceutical technicians became respondents, selected through a total sampling method. Data were collected using a structured observation sheet that included 15 indicators of drug information provision. Data were analyzed descriptively and presented in the form of a frequency distribution and a percentage. The results showed that the behavior of providing drug information by pharmaceutical technicians was still relatively low. Most of them only provided basic information, such as the name of the drug (78.12%), the time of consumption (71.87%), and instructions on how to use the drug (65.62%). Meanwhile, important information such as side effects, drug interactions, storage methods, and compliance with the use of drugs is almost not conveyed at all (≤10%). The behavior of pharmaceutical technicians in providing drug information still falls short of ideal pharmaceutical service standards. Continuous training, strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and supervision by the pharmacist-in-charge are necessary to enhance service quality and patient protection.
