Abstract

The Pomalaa mangrove ecosystem in Southeast Sulawesi primarily consists of the gastropods Faunus ater and Terebralia sulcata. The Pomalaa District is the largest nickel mining area in the region, and mining activities have significantly impacted the ecosystem by introducing overburdened sediment waste, visibly affecting the substrate, roots, and stems of mangroves. This research was conducted from June to September 2023 in the mangrove ecosystem of the Pomalaa District. This study examined the density differences of gastropods F. ater and T. sulcata in areas impacted by nickel mining overburden compared to minimally disturbed sites in the Pomalaa mangrove ecosystem, Southeast Sulawesi. Sampling was conducted using purposive and simple random sampling techniques. Gastropod samples were obtained (counted), analyzed for density, and associated with mangrove density in the sampled area. The results showed that the highest densities of F. ater and T. sulcata were found in areas not affected by nickel mining overburden (reference sites) with ranges of 50-153 ind./m2 and 24-57 ind./m2, respectively. In contrast, in the areas affected by overburden, the population densities of the two types of gastropods ranged from 0-11 ind./m2 for T. sulcata and to 0-21 ind./m2 for F. ater) despite having high mangrove densities in several places. The distribution pattern of these two species was in the clumped category. This study found a significant decrease in the density of two typical mangrove slug species in overburden-affected areas compared to the reference sites. Abstract

ARTICLE HIGHLIGHT             The present investigation provides substantiated empirical evidence demonstrating that nickel extraction operations have exerted considerable detrimental effects on the ecological integrity of the Pomalaa coastal region in Southeast Sulawesi. Environmental degradation and disruption of ecological equilibrium have been observed as direct consequences of persistent overburden waste disposal. The introduction of mining overburden into the Pomalaa coastal ecosystem has resulted in the extirpation of critical gastropod taxa and significant population reductions among persisting species when compared with control sites featuring undisturbed substrate conditions. The documented diminished gastropod population densities within nickel mining-affected zones serve as biological indicators of profound environmental deterioration attributable to these industrial activities. ABSTRACT Pomalaa District is the largest existing nickel mining center in Southeast Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. Pollutants from various anthropogenic activities, especially nickel mining overburden, end up in the Pomalaa coastal area. This research aimed to determine the structure of the gastropods community in the impacted area and reference site. This research was carried out in the Pomalaa coastal area, Kolaka Regency, from June to October 2023. Research stations were determined using purposive sampling method and simple random sampling techniques. On-site collecting gastropods samples were carried out manually (handpicking method). Impacted area and reference site showed significant differences in the number of species (16 and 21 species), presence, and density of gastropods, even though their respective ecological index categories were relatively the same (H' = 1.92 & 2.72; R =  2.93 & 3.41; E  = 0.55 & 0.78; C = 0.001 & 0.04). In the impacted area, the density of gastropods was very low (1 - 3 ind./m2), whereas at the reference site, the density reached 10 - 30 ind./m2. Gastropods inhabiting rocks or hard substrates, were relatively unaffected by the overburden, proven by stable population with a high density of 45 - 115 ind./m2. Nickel overburden input flowing to the Pomalaa coastal area greatly influenced the gastropods community in terms of species composition and density. On the other hand, the habitat (substrate) of gastropods as benthic organisms was covered and degraded by overburden piles up to 15 - 30 cm deep, which  was still increasing over time. On the other hand, in the reference site area, the condition was inversely proportional.

Abstract

Sea cucumbers are an economically important fishery commodity in great demand by both local and international audiences. As time goes by, the need for sea cucumbers increases and people make excessive use of sea cucumber resources until they reach the status of over-exploitation. This makes it necessary to know the level of utilization of sea cucumbers in Karimunjawa. This research was carried out on August - September 2023 in Tanjung Gelam, Karimunjawa. The purpose of this research is to find out the catch per unit effort, maximum sustainable potential/maximum sustainable yield, and the level of utilization of sea cucumbers in Karimunjawa waters. This research uses a survey method with the survey carried out to collect data regarding catches and fishing trips for fishermen directly. The data analysis method uses model calculations Schaefer. From the research results, it was found that the average CPUE production value was 4 kg/trip. The potential MSY value obtained is 2.857 kg/year with an optimum effort (f opt) of 620 trips/year. The level of utilization of sea cucumbers has an average value of 93,27% which is categorized as optimum, so there is no need to make additional efforts because the catch is already optimal and if it is added it will cause an excess catch.

Abstract

Channa marulioides is one of the species that is facing a population decrease due to high fishing activity. This study aims to determine the value of the length-weight relationship and condition factors of C. marulioides in the Kapuas River as a relevant conservation effort. Several sampling areas in this study were used to represent the Kapuas River, including Kapuas Hulu River in Kapuas Hulu Regency, Putussibau District; The central part of the waters area of "‹"‹Sintang Regency in Sintang Regency; and in the downstream waters of Pontianak City. The study carried out the sampling by analyzing the criteria for specimens with a dimension weight > 500 grams and length > 30 cm, with the same amount for each sex. The results showed that the growth type in the upper and middle waters was positive allometric with a value of b 3.1; however, it is negative allometric in the middle and upstream waters with b values "‹"‹of 2.5 and 1.7. After research, the condition factor of the upstream and middle waters was observed to be in good condition with a value of 1. However, in the downstream waters the condition of the fish was rather bad with a value below 1, namely 0.99. The study concludes there is a decrease in the quality of the aquatic environment and the food availability from the middle waters to the downstream. This is what underlines conservation efforts in the form of domestication activities within the scope of structured fish farming.

Abstract

The Wulan Delta, located in Wedung, Demak, was formed due to the sedimentation process of the Wulan and Serang rivers. Sediment transport starts from rivers to the sea; the process carries nutrients and various chemicals derived from agricultural, industrial, or household activities. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of hydrodynamics, suspended sediment, and bottom sediments in the Wulan Delta waters, Demak. Field data were collected in transitional season two (October) 2022. The obtained data were then analyzed in the laboratory at the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science. Results showed that the speed of the surface current in the study area ranged from 0 to 0.1 m/s in spring tide conditions with a surface current pattern coming from the direction of Semarang toward Jepara and 0–0.18 m/s in neap tide conditions with a current pattern coming from the direction of Jepara toward Semarang. The Wulan Delta has a sedimentary characteristic dominated by fine silt, which is as much as 82%–98%, with a deposition characteristic dominated by wave energy that causes successful sediment sorting with a sorting index of −2.25 to 2 and strongly asymmetrical to a small size with a skewness curve value of two.
