Abstract

Obesity is an overnutrition problem that has not yet received special attention from the government or society. Adolescents are easily influenced by their peers. Providing balanced nutrition education to adolescents at SMA Negeri 1 Singosari using the peer education method is expected to improve nutritional knowledge, enhance dietary patterns, and reduce the overweight adolescents' body mass index (BMI). A screening was conducted among tenth-grade students, identifying 60 students with a BMI ≥25.1 kg/m². The instruments included a nutritional knowledge questionnaire, Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ) to assess dietary patterns, weight and height measurements to determine BMI. The results showed an increase in knowledge scores; however, it was not statistically significant (p-value = 0.106). There was a significant effect on the reduction of adolescents' BMI (p-value = 0.023). Dietary patterns showed improvement in average daily intake, frequency of consumption, and food preparation methods, although the intake of plant-based proteins, vegetables, and fruits remained below the Balanced Nutrition Guidelines. The results of this study imply that balanced nutrition education using the peer tutor method can be an effective approach to reduce BMI and encourage healthier eating patterns in obesity adolescents.

Abstract

Puberty is a critical phase in a child’s development requiring physical, psychological, and social readiness. Mothers, as primary caregivers, play an important role in accompanying and providing education during this transition. Inaccurate perceptions by mothers may affect the quality of their supportive behavior. This study aims to examine the relationship between mothers’ perception and behavior in preparing children for puberty. This analytic observational study used a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 45 mothers with preadolescent children at MI Sunan Kalijaga Mergan, Malang City, selected by purposive sampling. Perception data were collected using a Likert scale questionnaire (1–4), while behavior was measured through narrative observation sheets. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s correlation test. Results showed that most respondents had positive (55.6%) and moderate (37.8%) perception categories, and behaviors in moderate (62.2%) and good (31.1%) categories. Statistical analysis revealed a significant relationship between perception and behavior (p = 0.002; r = 0.455). The more positive the mother’s perception, the better the supportive behavior. These findings emphasize the importance of improving mothers’ perceptions through appropriate education to enhance supportive behavior during their children’s puberty transition.

Abstract

Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women in Indonesia. One simple and self-administered method of early detection is Breast Self-Examination (SADARI). However, women’s skills in performing SADARI remain relatively low, including among PKK mothers, who play a strategic role in community health education. This low level of skill is caused by lack of information, minimal hands-on practice, and the absence of ongoing training. Health education is one intervention believed to improve these skills. This study aimed to determine the effect of health education on the skills of PKK mothers in performing SADARI in Rampal Celaket Subdistrict, Malang City. The research used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. A total of 35 respondents were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using an observation checklist for SADARI skills covering 20 indicators. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results showed a significant improvement in skills after the health education intervention, with a p-value < 0.05. Before the intervention, most respondents were only able to perform around 6–7 out of 20 SADARI steps, whereas after the intervention, the majority were able to perform all 20 steps correctly and sequentially. It can be concluded that health education significantly improves the skills of PKK mothers in performing SADARI. Therefore, a structured and sustainable health education program should be considered as a promotive strategy to encourage early detection of breast cancer in the community.

Abstract

Background: Herbal milk formulated with avocado oil and turmeric is a functional beverage with potential health benefits, but its microbiological safety requires evaluation to determine appropriate storage conditions. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the effects of storage temperature and duration on total bacterial count (Total Plate Count/TPC) as well as the presence of Escherichia coli, coliforms, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterobacteriaceae. Methods: A laboratory experimental design using a factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was applied, involving two factors: storage temperature (4°C, 25°C, and 40°C) and storage duration (0, 3, and 7 days). Results: The results showed that storage at 4°C effectively affected microbial growth, indicated by a decrease in TPC from 5.51 log CFU/mL to 2.57 log CFU/mL on day 7. In contrast, storage at room temperature (25°C) and elevated temperature (40°C) led to increased microbial activity during the first three days. Conclusion: Overall, storage at 4°C is recommended as the safest condition, with a maximum storage duration of seven days to maintain the microbiological safety and stability of the avocado–turmeric herbal milk.
