Abstract

Altitudinal gradient has specific factors that affect the composition of the bird community. A study of bird species based on altitude zonation on the Mount Kerinci hiking trail through Kersik Tuo, Kerinci, Jambi was conducted in August 2021 to know how the composition and structure of bird communities differed based on altitude zonation. This study was conducted using the point-count method. Point-count distributed along the hiking trail from 1,755 to 2,906 m asl and included in three zones (Zone I: 1,755 - 1,900 m asl: Zone II: 1,901 - 2,500 m asl: and Zone III: above 2,501 m asl). Four hundred sixty-seven individuals from 78 species of birds were recorded along the hiking trail. This number indicates that the number of bird species in the study at Mount Kerinci was more than the number of bird species in the study at other mountains in Sumatra. Species richness was the highest in Zone I (54 species), followed by Zone II (34 species) and Zone III (20 species). The species richness decrease as elevation increases.

Abstract

Abstract

A zoo is a place to live or collect wild animals outside their natural habitat which can be controlled by the government or non-government, and functions as a breeding ground so that natural genetics is maintained. Apart from being a place of conservation, it is also a place of education and a place of recreation. The problem with zoos in Indonesia is that their management is not by the principles of animal welfare. This study aims to summarize the results of the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) by collecting reference articles related to the keyword "Implementation of Zoo Management Strategies based on Animal Welfare Standards". Management efforts must pay attention to the survival of animals by the principles of animal welfare, namely freedom from hunger and thirst; free from pain, injury, and disease; free from environmental discomfort, abuse, and violence; freedom from fear and depression; and free in expressing natural behavior. Pay attention to zoo management, both animals and officers or keepers according to their expertise. Strategy implementation using SWOT analysis, namely analysis that obtains useful strategies to implement or recommendations based on results that can maximize Strengths and Opportunities, by minimizing Weaknesses and avoiding Threats.

Abstract

Land use change is an important issue for urban and regional planners and policy makers, but it is also very useful in conservation planning, food security, and hydrological modeling. Data, information and analysis tools become obstacles in detecting changes in land use. With increasing access to data and current technology, it is hoped that land use observations can be carried out in a simple way but have more accurate results. This study aimed to analyze land cover changes in Padang City 2018-2022, using Landsat Imagery and Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis. Firstly, observations on ESRI Land Cover which displays a global map of land use or land cover (LULC) derived from ESA Sentinel-2 Imagery at a resolution of 10 m. The results showed that the area of forest cover has decreased and the built-up area has increased in the 2017-2018 and 2021-2022. Secondly, using the EO Browser, namely Sentinel-2, that was done in one to search for and compare images using high resolution at these sources, there were 19 land cover changes, such as increasing residential land use, while forest land allotment decreased.

Abstract

The main authorities and practitioners face crucial challenges in safeguarding wildlife and conservation areas due to massive direct anthropogenic disturbances, such as illegal logging, habitat conversion into human development areas, and wildlife poaching. Therefore, measuring the effectiveness of wildlife and habitat protection is essential for wider conservation intervention. This study aimed to examine patrol effectiveness using measurable effort and parameters of SMART-based data collection in Rimbang Baling and Bukit Betabuh, Sumatra. We conducted a series of planned SMART-based data collections in designated patrol blocks of Rimbang Baling from 2014 to 2018. We implemented catch per unit effort (CPUE) measurement by the number of detected illegal activities and then a generalized linear model (GLM) to assess the relationship between patrol efforts and threat numbers. This study covered 209 patrols within 2,129 patrol days, 13,153.05 patrol hours, and 14,864 km. The CPUE value decreased from 0.381 to 0.191. Our GLM showed that patrol efforts significantly reduced threat numbers. This study provides new knowledge regarding SMART-based data collection and its ability to increase the effectiveness of patrols in promoting better protection and threat reduction in conservation areas in Indonesia.
