Abstract

Karo people believe in the existence of Dibata Kaci-kaci (“God”). The understanding and belief about Dibata is obtained through life experiences, natural phenomena, and events experienced. The orientation of this research is to find the transformation of belief in Dibata as the concept of God for Karo Catholics. The research method used is qualitative, with interview techniques based on experiences derived from oral traditions, group discussion forums, and documentation. Research informants: five traditional leaders, two Karo culturalists, two priests, and five pastoral councils of parishes and stations. This research uses Rudolf Otto's (1917) theory of religious phenomenology to understand the experience and understanding of the sacred or numinous. This theory helps explain how Karo people experience and understand God's presence through natural phenomena and life events. The findings of this study are in line with previous research by Singarimbun (1975) and Ginting (2018), which also examined the concept of God in Karo beliefs. However, this study provides a new perspective by exploring the transformation of the concept in the context of Karo Catholics. The novelty of this research lies in finding the intersection between the experience and understanding of God in the beliefs of the Karo people and the concept of the Trinity in the teachings of the Catholic Church. The results show that the Karo people recognize, acknowledge, and believe in the existence of a God who is both transcendent and immanent, namely Dibata Datas (God Above), Dibata Tengah (God Middle), and Dibata Teruh (God Below). The experience and understanding of God in the Karo people's beliefs find common ground, thus becoming an opportunity for evangelization. The concept of the Karo God as a God with three persons (Dibata si Telu Sada) reveals the Karo belief that Dibata is present in all realities: the upper world, the middle world, and the lower world. For example, Karo: Mula jadi (creator, origin), Dibata Kaci kaci (loving God), Nini (grandfather). This finding is a new idea that can be used as catechetical material about the Trinity that the Catholic Church believes in.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the challenges faced by Catholic couples in building marital relationships in the early years (0–10) and formulate a new catechetical model based on “Shared Christian Praxis” (SCP) to strengthen couples' love relationships. How can catechesis transition from a limited preparation model to a sustainable accompaniment model that is responsive to the specific challenges of young couples? The method used was a hermeneutic phenomenological approach, with in-depth interviews with 17 Catholic couples in Santo Damian Lau Baleng Parish, Archdiocese of Medan, as well as participatory observation and documentation study. The findings show that couples face various challenges, including economic problems, poor communication, and a lack of pastoral assistance from the Church. Despite this, couples show good resilience skills by integrating spiritual and practical aspects into their daily lives. High expectations for the Church's role in sustainable mentoring were expressed by informants, who wanted a more systematic and relevant program. This study recommends the development of a holistic and sustainable mentoring program, as well as the establishment of a community support network to assist young Catholic couples in facing the challenges of marriage. Thus, SCP-based catechesis is expected to bridge the gap between the Church's teachings and the experiences of young Catholic couples

Abstract

The Liturgy of the Word serves to strengthen faith, shape congregational identity, and transform congregational life. Meanwhile, preaching, as part of the Liturgy of the Word, has a sacramental dimension and functions to renew the Word of God in the context of people's lives. The purpose of this study is to analyze the competence of church administrators in delivering the Liturgy of the Word and sermons, explore contextual challenges in its implementation in the midst of congregations without priests, and formulate strategies for empowering liturgy and homilies based on local culture as a relevant and sustainable pastoral solution. The approach used in this research is participatory action research. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation. The results showed that in St. Damian Parish, Lau Baleng, there is a competency gap among church administrators in the understanding and animation of the Liturgy of the Word as well as preaching skills. The quality of service, including the abilities to inculturate the liturgy in Karo culture, requires structured training. A pastoral approach in liturgy is key to creating meaningful experiences for the people, especially in a multicultural context.

Abstract

The Sacrament of Penance, according to the teachings of the Catholic Church, is a means of forgiveness of sins and restoration of a personal relationship with God. Through this sacrament, God forgives man's sins and restores his relationship with Himself. The purpose of the sacrament is not only to absolve the recipient from sin, but also to encourage them to make a strong commitment to refrain from sin in the future. The principal objective of this study is to ascertain the comprehension of Catholics regarding the sacrament of penance and Catholics' participation in receiving the Sacrament. This research focuses on the parishioners of Santo Paulus Pulo Brayan Bengkel Medan. This research employs a qualitative methodology. Data were gathered through observation of the reception of the sacrament of penance, interviews with informants to ascertain their understanding and practice of receiving the sacrament of penance, and the examination of relevant documentation. This was followed by data analysis, data reduction, data presentation, source triangulation and technique triangulation. The research reveals that Catholics have poor understanding of the sacrament of penance. The groups that are more eager to receive the Sacrament of Penance are the groups of mothers, the elderly and children. We classify these findings into the following categories: Firstly, people's understanding of the sacrament of Penance is minimal, which affects their participation in receiving the sacrament. Secondly, the implementation aspect includes both the preparation and the execution phases. The research shows that most people are not adequately prepared for confession and are not ready for its execution. This fact shows the need to educate and motivate people through catechesis so that they have a correct understanding of the importance of the sacrament of Penance.
