Abstract

Batik merupakan salah satu warisan budaya Indonesia. Dalam produksinya, batik menggunakan bahan pewarna, malam, dan zat-zat kimia lainnya. Penggunaan bahan tersebut menghasilkan limbah cair dengan kandungan kadar minyak dan lemak, COD, dan pH yang tinggi. Selain itu, limbah yang dibuang langsung ke lingkungan merupakan limbah yang beracun dan dapat merusak ekosistem. Metode High Rate Algae Reactor (HRAR) menggunakan Ulva sp. digunakan pada penelitian ini. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh konsentrasi tablet CO2, lama penyinaran, dan banyaknya suspensi Ulva sp. dalam pengolahan limbah. Ulva sp. sebanyak 5 – 15% dimasukkan ke dalam HRAR bersamaan dengan limbah cair batik, kemudian dilakukan penambahan tablet CO2 sebanyak 0,27 – 0,81 gram yang selanjutnya dilakukan penyinaran selama 6 – 24 jam. Optimasi pengolahan limbah dilakukan menggunakan metode RSM (Response Surface Methodology) dengan rancangan percobaan kombinasi perlakuan Central Composite Design (CCD) menggunakan software Design Expert 13. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, variabel pengolahan limbah paling optimal berada pada saat konsentrasi suspensi Ulva sp. 5%, lama penyinaran 24 jam, dan massa tablet CO2 sebesar 0,27 gram. Respon yang diperoleh pada variabel tersebut yakni kadar COD 48,2 mg/L, kadar minyak dan lemak 0,432 mg/L, serta nilai pH 7,929.

Abstract

Desa Plalangan yang terletak di Kecamatan Kalisat, Kabupaten Jember, merupakan salah satu desa binaan Universitas Jember dengan potensi besar dalam pengembangan produk ramah lingkungan. Masyarakat desa ini sebelumnya telah dilatih untuk mengolah minyak jelantah menjadi sabun cuci piring dan lilin aromaterapi, namun aspek pengemasan dan pemasaran produk masih perlu ditingkatkan agar memiliki nilai jual lebih tinggi. Program pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pelatihan strategi packaging dan marketing produk berbasis minyak jelantah agar masyarakat mampu mengembangkan usaha secara mandiri. Metode pelaksanaan meliputi pendalaman mutu produk, perancangan desain kemasan, pelatihan strategi pemasaran offline dan online, serta evaluasi tingkat pemahaman peserta. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan peningkatan wawasan dan kreativitas warga dalam mendesain kemasan yang menarik dan fungsional, serta pemahaman mengenai cara promosi produk baik melalui penjualan langsung (face to face selling) maupun live selling di platform digital seperti TikTok. Program ini diharapkan dapat memperkuat daya saing produk lokal, meningkatkan pendapatan masyarakat, serta mendukung terwujudnya ekonomi sirkular berbasis lingkungan di Desa Plalangan.

Abstract

Nitrogen recovery from wastewater is capable of preventing eutrophication, offering economic benefits, and reducing carbon footprint from synthetic fertilizer production. Biochar has been explored as adsorbent for ammonium (NH??) removal. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the potential of biochar derived from cocopeat as adsorbent for NH?? removal. Cocopeat was modified by potassium hydroxide (KOH) and pyrolyzed at 500°C for 2 h to produce activated biochar. Kinetics and isotherm studies were conducted to examine adsorption mechanisms. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) data showed that the resulting biochar after activation and adsorption contained hydroxyl O–H and C–O groups, while a new N–H band confirmed the interaction with NH?? ions. Biochar adsorbed NH?? ions with a maximum capacity of 0.3078?mg/g. FTIR spectra showed shifts and changes in the intensity of functional group bands, confirming the interaction between NH?? ion and the active sites on biochar surface. Adsorption followed Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-first-order kinetics model, with an optimal contact time of 5 h. These results suggested that cocopeat-based biochar had potential as an effective NH?? adsorbent.

Abstract

Ulva lactuca merupakan biota laut yang berpotensi sebagai sumber bahan aktif kosmetik karena kandungan bioaktifnya seperti flavonoid, alkaloid, saponin, terpenoid, dan tanin. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengekstraksi flavonoid serta menganalisis nilai Sun Protection Factor (SPF) U. lactuca menggunakan kombinasi metode cell disruption dan ultrasound-assisted hot water (UAHW). Tiga metode perlakuan cell disruption (tanpa perlakuan, osmotic shock, dan hidrotermal dengan autoklaf) dikombinasikan dengan variabel UAHW yaitu suhu ultrasonik (40, 60, 80 °C) dan waktu ultrasonik (5, 10, 15 menit). Ekstraksi dilakukan menggunakan pelarut etanol 96% pada serbuk U. lactuca berukuran 60 mesh. Optimasi dilakukan menggunakan Response Surface Methodology (RSM) dengan Box–Behnken Design (BBD). Hasil menunjukkan bahwa total flavonoid dan nilai SPF tertinggi (33,23 mg QE/g dan SPF 20,80) diperoleh tanpa perlakuan cell disruption, pada suhu 80 °C dan waktu ekstraksi 10 menit. Penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa metode UAHW efektif meningkatkan ekstraksi flavonoid dan SPF meskipun tanpa cell disruption. Selain itu, pendekatan RSM terbukti efisien dalam optimasi proses. Studi ini memberikan kontribusi pada pengembangan bahan aktif alami U. lactuca untuk aplikasi kosmetik, khususnya sebagai agen pelindung sinar UV.Optimization of Flavonoid Extraction from Ulva lactuca Using a Combination of Cell Disruption and Ultrasound-Assisted Hot Water. Ulva lactuca is a marine organism with significant potential as a source of active ingredients for cosmetic applications, owing to bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, terpenoids, and tannins. This study aimed to extract flavonoids and evaluate the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of U. lactuca using a combination of cell disruption methods and ultrasound-assisted hot water (UAHW) extraction. Three cell disruption treatments (no treatment, osmotic shock, and hydrothermal using an autoclave) were combined with UAHW variables, including ultrasonic temperature (40, 60, 80 °C) and ultrasonic time (5, 10, 15 minutes). The extraction was conducted using 96% ethanol as a solvent on U. lactuca powder sieved to 60 mesh. Optimization was performed using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with a Box–Behnken Design (BBD). The highest total flavonoid content (33.23 mg QE/g extract) and SPF value (20.80) were obtained without cell disruption, at 80°C for 10 minutes. The study confirms that UAHW effectively enhances flavonoid extraction and SPF, even without cell disruption. Furthermore, the RSM approach proved efficient for process optimization. This study contributes to developing natural active ingredients from U. lactuca for cosmetic applications, particularly as UV-protective agents.

Abstract

Relative humidity (RH) of the drying air is the main driving force in the drying process, as dry air has a greater capacity to absorb water vapor from the material; therefore, the lower the RH, the faster the drying rate. This study aims to determine the optimal RH point under varying airflow rate, evaporator temperature, and heater temperature, and to identify the most suitable RSM model equation. The research was carried out in three stages: (1) development of a dehumidifier dryer; (2) optimization and modeling using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with three factors—airflow rate, evaporator temperature, and heater temperature—and one primary response, namely the RH of drying air, along with an additional response of drying air temperature. Design Expert v13 software with the RSM Central Composite Design (CCD) was used to select optimum process conditions from the combination of operating parameters. The accuracy of heater temperature control was analyzed using relative error. The relationship between variables and the RH response of air entering the drying chamber was modeled as: Y = 14.02 + 0.8154A + 0.7625B – 2.75C – 0.4375AB – 0.0875AC – 0.2625BC + 2.48A² + 3.09B² + 9.83C² (where A = airflow rate, B = evaporator temperature, and C = heater temperature). The optimal RH response of the drying air was 20.263% at an airflow rate of 0.018 m³/s, evaporator temperature of 8.413 °C, and heater temperature of 39.49 °C. Air heating temperature control performed very well, with a relative error of 1.22%, which is below 5%.

Abstract

Indonesia has been recognized for its rich natural ingredients such as spices,herbs, and extracts for decades. Furthermore, these components also have been used as an herbal medicine for a long time. Meanwhile, the apparent capability comparison of several components of antimicrobial activity has not been updated yet. This study was conducting the comparison of antimicrobial activity for several materials such as noni (Morinda citrifolia), garlic (Allium sativum), celery (Apium graveolens), galangal (Alpinia galangal), ginger (Zingiber officinale), yellow turmeric (Curcuma longa), lime (Citrus aurantifolia), papaya (Carica papaya) leaf, betel (Piper betel) leaf, and cutcherry (Kaempferia galangal) using agar dilution method. Two types of bacteria are used for the test, namely gram-negative bacteria and gram-positive bacteria, with a total of seven bacteria. The media used were TSA (Trypticase Soy Agar) media for gram-negative bacteria and MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) media for gram-positive bacteria. This study had been conducted by using a fast screening method, which is referred to as a semi-qualitative method. Several components, such as noni, lime, and betel leaf, showed a significant result of antimicrobial activity. Otherwise, other compounds, surprisingly, could not suppress bacterial growth.

Abstract

Treatment using natural ingredients in Indonesia is the leading choice, and it is growing in society. This is because treatment with natural ingredients has relatively milder side effects than synthetic treatment. Therefore, further research is needed on natural ingredients that can be used as natural medicines, including pegagan (Centella asiatica (L.)). Several studies have found bioactive compounds in pegagan that can be used in various medical methods. The author wants to know the optimal conditions for extracting pegagan bioactive compounds using the microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) method. This study used the Pegagan leaf size 40 mesh that had been dried. Pegagan leaves were extracted using ethanol as a solvent with microwave power, solvent concentration, and extraction time as variables. Variable power: 150 watts, 300 watts, and 450 watts. Variable solvent concentration 25%, 50%, and 75%. Variable extraction time for 5, 10, and 15 minutes. The results of the study were analyzed using total phenol analysis using the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The research data obtained optimum operating conditions at 75% solvent concentration, 450-watt microwave power, and an extraction time of 10 minutes with a total phenol content of 1251.410225 mg AGE/g sample.

Abstract

Bioethanol is a form of renewable energy used to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, which have various adverse environmental impacts. Ulva sp. contains high amounts of carbohydrates, which can potentially be a raw material for bioethanol production. This study aims to determine the optimal conditions of the fermentation process, considering the variables of time, pH, and yeast concentration. This study used the hydrolysis results of Ulva sp. with optimum operating conditions of 0.1 N HCl concentration, 80 mesh particle size, and 450-watt microwave power. Measurement of bioethanol levels was performed using an alcohol meter. The results showed that the optimal conditions for fermentation were 7 days, pH 5.5, and a yeast concentration of 1.5%, resulting in a bioethanol content of 7.55%.

Abstract

The practical technique for membrane modification is dip coating. This study coats a PVDF hollow fiber membrane-based composite with a zeolite coating. The composite is made of a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane. The separation capabilities and propensities of composite membranes for organic impurities were examined during water filtering. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis of the findings demonstrated that the Zeolite coating was successfully deposited on the PVDF membrane. The flux recovery ratio increases from 69% to 80% while the relative flux drop decreases from 63% to 50%. A composite PVDF membrane dip-coating of Zeolite with a GA and H2SO4 ratio of 1:2 is needed to remove about 75% of humic compounds from effluent. This study's results show that adding Zeolite with a GA and H2SO4 layer can significantly improve the PVDF hollow fiber membrane's hydrophilicity, selectivity, and anti-organic fouling.

Abstract

Spent coffee grounds were used as the main ingredient for composing magnetically activated carbon/chitosan (MACC) composites and synthesized using the coprecipitation method. The SEM-EDX characterization was used to understand the elemental identification and morphology of the adsorbent before the MACC was applied to remove methylene blue (MB) from the aqueous solution. Magnetic activated carbon/chitosan was fabricated under the following circumstances: the molar ratio of ferrous/ferric ions was 2:1, and the coprecipitation temperature was 60 °C for five hours. Adsorption parameters for MB were investigated. The adsorption by MACC was evaluated thermodynamically for the discharge of MB from an aqueous solution as a function of temperature. Calculations of thermodynamic parameters were conducted. Batch adsorption experiments were operated at 308 K, 318 K, and MB concentration of 5-50 mg L-1 to investigate the adsorption behavior. According to the results, MACC has a porous structure. The adsorption process is more reactive upon raising the temperature, commonly known as endothermic. Based on R2 values, the adsorption of MB onto MACC was found to fit the Freundlich model best. The maximum adsorption capacity of the MACC was counted as 24.5 mg/g. The adsorption process is spontaneous, which was concluded from calculating thermodynamic parameters.
