Abstract

Algebra is a concept that is abundant in everyday life, connecting symbols with contextual problems. The challenge of learning algebraic forms is apparent among seventh-grade students at SMP N 15 Yogyakarta, who have a low mathematical literacy. The initial research findings show variability in the components of mathematical literacy among students, including Communication (23%), Mathematicalization (20%), formulation of Problem-Solving Strategies (11%), Reasoning and Argumentation (12%), Symbolic, Formal, and Technical Language Usage, and Operations (2%), Representation (18%), and use of Mathematical Tools (18%). One of the reasons for the low literacy is the learning model and the material is less suitable. This research aims to develop a PBL-based e-Module to improve students' mathematical literacy in algebraic forms. The research method used is R&D with the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). The research instruments include expert validation of materials and media, student responses, and pretests. The developed e-Module received good validation from media experts (average 4.33) and material experts (average 4.63). Student responses were also positive, averaging 82% falling into the practical category. The conclusion is that this e-Module is suitable for use as a tool for improving students' mathematical literacy.

Abstract

Critical thinking skill was needed since problems in daily life required a solution. To solve the problems, the students collect the data as a consideration in making the right decision. Moreover, the students also need good critical thinking skills. To develop a good critical thinking skill, the researcher develops a textbook of Complex Analysis and Application, especially in complex numbers. In this research, a qualitative investigation was carried out in the development of the textbook. This textbook supports the mathematics education students of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan in learning complex analysis course. Researchers did a walkthrough to the expert in assessing the content and construct to validate the textbook. The development model used by researchers is a 4 D model. A 4-D model used in this study is consists of defining, designing, developing, and disseminating. In defining, the researcher adequate materials related to the complex numbers such as the rational number and real number and its properties in addition and multiplication. In designing, some explanation in the textbook is followed by Why and How questions. Open questions are used to stimulate the students’ critical thinking. Based on the walkthrough result, some notation in the textbook, especially mathematics symbols, must be revised using a proper mathematics equation. In addition, some concept should be clearly defined such as z‐¹ = 1/z where the value of z ≠ 0. As a result of the validity construct, the explanation given in the textbook used a step-by step exercise. In disseminating, the students can easily access the textbook and answer the questions using their reasoning. The textbook is valid and readable.

Abstract

Mathematics literacy is individual capacity to formulate, to employ, and to interpret mathematics in various contexts. Indonesian students aged 15 are required to perform these three skills and these abilities reflect the success of the curriculum. The results, however, are never considered satisfying since, many argue, the students are not accustomed to deal with the mathematics literacy problems. Teacher is then the one who takes the responsibility to make the students familiar with the literacy problems. This research aims to look closer at the mathematics literacy skills possessed by pre-service teachers. It is a qualitative research which involved 128 undergraduate student teachers as the subjects. A custom mathematics literacy test was developed with various contexts to measure the student teachers’ literacy skills according to the PISA framework. The results suggest that they performed well in the level 1 to 3 problems, but not in the level 4 to 6. Many errors made by the student teachers in the stage of formulating, employing, or interpreting. Finally, teachers need to be accustomed to this skill before they are ready enough to teach their students.

Abstract

One of the mathematics learning materials in class VIII, namely the system of linear equations in two variables, does not meet learning standards. One of the causes of students' critical thinking skills not being optimal is the lack of students' desire to ask questions. From the results of the pretest given by researchers to students, it appears that there are several errors in the system of linear equations in two variables equation material, namely that students are not able to model problems in mathematical form, students are also less capable. cannot fully apply the system of linear equations in two variables method. This research aims to develop an e-worksheet based on Problem Based Learning (PBL) to enhance students' critical thinking skills. Based on the validity test, e- worksheet with a valid PBL model is used for learning with an average material score of 4.53 and an average media score of 3.808. E-worksheets with the PBL model are said to be practical to use in the learning process based on an average student response of 4.134.
