Abstract

Beef cattle play a strategic role in supporting food security and the regional economy in West Papua Province. This study aims to analyze the trend of beef cattle population growth and identify the factors influencing beef cattle supply in West Papua Province. A descriptive research design was employed, utilizing secondary data obtained from official sources. Trend analysis was applied to assess cattle population growth, while multiple regression analysis was conducted to examine the factors affecting beef cattle supply in the province. The analysis predicts that the beef cattle population in West Papua will continue to increase over the next ten years. The supply of beef cattle in West Papua is significantly influenced by the previous year’s production, current cattle population, slaughter rate, beef prices, Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), human population, and the populations of goats and pigs.

Abstract

This study assessed the production performance and technical efficiency of independent broiler farmers in Sorong Regency, Indonesia, using a stochastic frontier framework. The objective of the research is to quantify the influence of major production inputs on output, estimate technical efficiency levels, and evaluate the extent to which inefficiency contributes to variations in broiler performance under open-house production conditions. Primary data were collected from active broiler farmers and analyzed using a Cobb–Douglas stochastic frontier production function estimated through maximum likelihood procedures to obtain input elasticities and individual efficiency scores. The results indicated that broiler production performed competitively, with a performance index of 456, low mortality, and an efficient feed conversion ratio. The production frontier estimation showed that day-old chicks and feed were the dominant determinants of output, while medication, electricity, and fuel inputs did not exert statistically significant effects. Average technical efficiency reached 0.89, with 86.6 percent of farmers operating at high-efficiency levels. The gamma parameter of 0.83 indicated that most output variation stemmed from technical inefficiency rather than random disturbances, underscoring the relevance of managerial capacity in shaping production outcomes. The study concludes that improving the quality of biological inputs and strengthening managerial practices is essential for sustaining productivity among independent broiler farmers. The findings provide empirical guidance for technical training programs, input quality improvement, and targeted interventions to enhance production efficiency in eastern Indonesia.

Abstract

ARTICLE HIGHLIGHTS Indigenous communities read animal signs as early warnings for nature events Shared experiences shape how different animal behaviours gain meaning Local wisdom shows animals as sensitive partners in human survival   ABSTRACTObserving animal behavior and daily activities can help humans gain knowledge and derive practical benefits. A mixed-method approach, combining desk-based study and telephone interviews, was employed to collect data from seven major Papuan tribal groups. The desk study involved the collection of approximately 2,000 references published between 1980 and 2020 using keyword-based searches conducted with specialized software. Data were also provided by leaders from the seven major communities. The collected data were analyzed using Rayyan, VoS Viewer, Crammer’s Phi, and Microsoft Excel. The principal findings indicate that 14 publications addressed topics related to animal signaling and community beliefs. The animals recognized by the seven major tribal group as exhibiting signals included mammals (52%), fish (8%), reptiles (12%), amphibians (8%), birds (4%), and insects (16%). Animals were reported to convey signals through vocalizations (sounds), appearance, body parts, wastes, tracks, constructed objects, and odors. The result of Crammer’s Phi analysis showed (168) = 219.48, P = 0.0046, df = 168,  = 0.05 and 0.01, and φc = 0.0105 (1%). This results indicate a significant association between perceived values in interpreting animal signals and tribal community groups in West Papua. A Cartesian graph demonstrated low-to-high levels of both animal signaling and beliefs. Beliefs and practices related to animal sensitivity and communication vary across cultures and communities worldwide. Many indigenous communities maintain a deep spiritual connection with nature and animals, viewing them as sentient beings with their own forms of communication and sensitivity.

Abstract

This study aims to develop alternative strategies for the advancement of the Bali cattle industry in Tambrauw Regency through the identification of critical internal and external factors influencing its growth. The research was conducted over a two-month period employing a descriptive approach, with data collection facilitated through quota, purposive, and cluster sampling techniques. Analytical tools utilized include the SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) framework and the Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix (QSPM). The analysis identified effective marketing mechanisms as the principal internal strength of the local cattle industry, while limited access to capital emerged as a primary internal constraint. From an external perspective, supportive government policies were recognized as key opportunities, whereas livestock theft and poaching constituted significant threats to industry sustainability. Strategic priorities derived from the SWOT-QSPM analysis encompass capital reinforcement, enhancement of production quality and quantity, improved access to markets and information, development of livestock production systems based on local resources, and institutional capacity building through strengthened collaborative networks and human resource development. The recommended strategic alternatives include increasing access to financial resources, expanding business operations, and improving production efficiency. These strategies are expected to contribute to the sustainable development of the Bali cattle industry in Tambrauw Regency.
