Abstract

Pendekatan antarbudaya sekarang ini cukup penting dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris terutama untuk siswa sebagai penutur asing bahasa Inggris (EFL). Tujuan dari pendekatan ini adalah untuk membuat siswa menjadi "manusia antarbudaya" (Byram et al, 2002). Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif interpretative yang memotret penggunaan film sebagai media teks dalam pengajaran pembelajaran bahasa Inggris antarbudaya di Prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris UNSIKA. Kegiatan kelas didasarkan pada prinsip-prinsip pengajaran dan pebelajaran bahasa antarbudaya yang dari Liddicoat & Scarino (2013. Film yang disajikan untuk siswa didasarkan pada pertimbangan latar belakang dan pengaturan yang berkaitan dengan pendidikan. Observasi proses belajar mengajar dan wawancara dengan 30 siswa dilakukan untuk mendapatkan data. Hasilnya, pembelajaran bahasa Inggris antarbudaya dengan menggunakan media film memberi lebih banyak kesempatan bagi mahasiswa untuk lebih aktif dan kritis terhadap bahasa dan budaya lainnya. Mahasiswa juga sangat senang dengan film yang ditayangkan, selain ceritanya yang menarik, film tersebut juga memberikan nilai-nilai yang baik bagi mereka. Yang paling penting adalah bahwa mereka mengklaim bahwa mereka telah menjadi orang-orang antar budaya dan juga di masa depan.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melakukan investigasi terhadap kesulitan-kesulitan yang dihadapi mahasiswa PIAUD dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Design yang digunakan adalah kualitatif. Hasil dalam penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa S1 Prodi PIAUD menemukan kesulitan-kesulitan dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Kesulitan tersebut disebabkan oleh faktor kompetensi dan ketidaksiapan mahasiswa serta disebabkan pula oleh kondisi mahasiswa yang masih memiliki kemampuan bahasa Inggris yang sangat kurang, seperti: kurangnya penguasaan grammar, kosakata, dan pengucapan kata. Dari penelitian ini diharapkan agar mahasiswa dapat meningkatkan keterampilan dalam proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

Social networking apps have emerged as potentially useful new tools for improving second language vocabulary acquisition. The current research compares the growth of academic vocabulary knowledge in English. The purpose of this study is to compare the perspectives or views of the Department of English Education at Singaperbangsa Karawang University (UNSIKA). Online learning conducted during the Covid-19 Pandemic students using WhatsApp group media to traditional vocabulary instruction methods. The qualitative research method used in this study is a descriptive design with an explanation of the form of narrative related to the views of students in online learning during the pandemic. Data was collected through interviews specially semi structure interview based on interview guideline and data analysis by involving three students in the online learning process. The findings provide information about the learning process as well as the advantages and disadvantages of WhatsApp media. The interview results show that students in general have a positive attitude toward learning vocabulary through WhatsApp group media. However, technological limitations, unfamiliar presentation, and learning activities may prevent students from participating in a WhatsApp media lesson.

Abstract

Due to pandemic covid-19, the learning setting has changed from face-to-face to an online learning environment to prevent the further spread of infection. This change mostly affected the state of psychological, specifically anxiety issues. Specific anxiety called Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA) appears as anxiety affiliates with foreign language learning. Despite foreign language anxiety is evidenced to be hinder students’ achievements, there are only a few studies that have explored FLA in an online setting. Therefore, by using a case study, this research paper tried to investigate the factors of speaking anxiety of 5 students from different anxiety levels. These students were selected from a total of 30 students using the Foreign Language Anxiety Scale (FLCAS), which later be interviewed and asked to write a reflective journal. The result showed that some sources of each categorical factor (communication apprehension, test anxiety, fear of negative evaluation) can be classified as inter-lingual or intra-lingual factors. Moreover, some sources of factors have developed to new manifestations due to learning setting’ shifting. Additionally, as a part of communication apprehension, teachers’ bad teaching habits appeared as the most common factor to arise students’ speaking anxiety. Therefore, this study suggests teachers to evaluate their teaching habits, to reduce the influence of bad teaching habits on the students’ speaking anxiety.

Abstract

This devotion is motivated by the current disaster that occurred, namely the covid 19 pandemic that hit almost all countries in the world including Indonesia. Karawang as one of the regencies in West Java Province is in the red zone position of the Covid 19 spreading case. In order to provide awareness to the public of the importance of complying with 5 M in accordance with the government's advice to reduce the number of Covid 19 spread in Karawang, the focus of this service is to provide educational information on the community in the form of socialization and education of hadiths about the pandemic against mothers of jama'ah majlis ta'lim Miftahul Jannah located in Krajan Hamlet Cilamaya Village Cilamaya District Cilamaya Wetan Karawang Regency. Given the role of mothers as the vanguard to educate families at home will be important to comply with health protocols set by the government. The implementation of this devotional activity uses the method of lectures by teaching hadiths about the plague to the community. The result of this devotion is to enlighten the community about Islamic solutions during the outbreak based on the hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him)

Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to obtain an overall picture of translation of noun phrase. That is concerned with translation equivalence, translation procedure, translation shifts, and translation error in Traffic Rules PT Freeport Indonesia book. This study used a qualitative approach using content analysis method. The data in this study is noun phrase which focuses on the form of noun phrase pattern, there is 100 noun phrase translation to be represented the main problems of study, translation equivalence, translation procedure, translation shifts, and translation error. The findings of this study show the following. First, the translation equivalence has been found with formal equivalence and dynamic equivalence. Second, the translation procedure has been found with eight variety of procedure such as transference, literal, naturalization, expansion, reduction, couplet, modulation, cultural equivalent. Third, the translation shifts are structural shifts, unit shifts, class shifts, and intra-system shifts. Fourth, there is error translation of meaning has been found in this study.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui permasalahan guru EFL dalam menjalankan praktik mengajar berbicara selama pandemi COVID-19 dan bagaimana guru EFL mengatasi masalah tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan wawancara semi terstruktur dan pertanyaan terbuka sebagai teknik pengumpulan data. Partisipan dari penelitian ini adalah seorang guru EFL yang mengajar kelas XI di salah satu SMA di Karawang tahun akademik 2020/2021. Hasil penelitian ini menemukan bahwa guru EFL tersebut mengalami beberapa masalah dalam mengajar speaking, yaitu siswa yang tidak punya apapun untuk dikatakan, kurangnya motivasi dan partisipasi siswa, penggunaan bahasa ibu, dan kurangnya perlengkapan belajar yang berupa smartphone dan kuota internet. Untuk mengatasi setiap permasalahan tersebut, guru mempunyai caranya masing-masing, seperti guru memberikan pertanyaan kepada siswa agar siswa dapat lebih banyak berbicara atau memancing siswa dengan nilai, memotivasi siswa dengan memberikan video-video inspiratif disetiap pembelajaran online dan mencoba untuk lebih mencari tau penyebab serta solusinya dengan bekerjasama dengan walikelas murid, dan terus mencoba untuk mengajak siswa berbicara dalam Bahasa Inggris. Selain itu juga guru mengatakan bahwa siswa yang tidak mempunyai kuota internet atau smarrtphone dapat meminta salinan materi dan tugas kepada temannya.

Abstract

Podcasts are a medium that can help teachers and students in distance learning or electronic learning. Podcasts can help teachers provide learning material and students can access it on each of the devices they have. Podcasts can also help students in learning English, especially in listening skills. This study aims to understand students’ interpersonal meaning focus on attitude towards podcast assisted listening learning. The researcher used a qualitative narrative inquiry design in this research to discover data from real-life situations. The instruments of this research were interview and diary. The collecting data was obtained through Google meeting. The researcher took place the research at Senior High School in Karawang. The participants of this research were four students of the 3rd grade at senior high school in Karawang. The questions were asked by semi structured interview. The findings revealed that the students’ attitude towards podcast assisted listening learning which include by three components, namely: affect, judgement and appreciation. Affect contain by students’ feeling, judgement contains by normality, capacity, tenacity, veracity, propriety and appreciation contains by quality, composition, and valuation

Abstract

Anxiety is popular topic to discuss. Yet, studies focusing on situations which lead students to feel anxious in online EFL speaking classroom remain scarce. Therefore, this study is aimed to: (1) figure out situation causing students’ anxiety in an EFL speaking classroom; and (2) find out strategies that students use to cope with speaking anxiety. Nine second-year high school students were interviewed to explore the issue. The interview data were analysed using thematic analysis. The result indicated several situations in which students feel anxious when speaking English. These included: speaking in front of big and formal audience, worry of being misunderstood, lack of confidence, and worry of being asked all of sudden. Furthermore, students also used similar strategies to research finding by Kondo & Ying-Ling (2004) even speaking class during online learning setting. There were three strategies mainly used by the students, i.e. preparation, relaxation and positive thinking.

Abstract

Learning is an activity that can be done anywhere and at any time as long as we have the desire to learn. Many people now travel abroad solely to learn. In this experience, exchange student found challenging on the cultural difference. This study aim to investigated Indonesian students' experience during the student mobility program abroad. Narrative inquiry was implemented to explore the experiences of two students by utilizing oral narratives by means of semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed that Indonesian students find it challenging talk to middle-aged people. In conclusion, perceive the challenges of living in other countries positively. Keywords:  Challenges, Experience, Student Mobility, English Language
