Abstract

English writing skills are pivotal for vocational students and their future careers. To improve students' writing skills, technology development provides access for teachers to create digital learning resources. Moreover, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology requires teachers to integrate technology in the classroom. However, preliminary research found that the teacher was not using technological-based learning resources. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to identify the needs of twelfth-grade students of vocational schools and to develop digital flipbook-based English writing materials. This study used a Research and Development (R&D) approach, with participants being twelfth-grade students from SMK Negeri 5 Medan. The research procedures followed ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Develop, Implementation, Evaluation). Instruments included needs analysis, expert judgement, teacher’s review, and students’ response questionnaires. The data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results of needs analysis indicated that most of the students wanted to improve their grammatical accuracy in their writing, After developing the product, the final overall score obtained from the expert, teacher and students was 3.67, categorizing the materials as "very good." The development of digital flipbook-based English writing materials for twelfth-grade students at vocational schools has significant implications for enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes in English instruction. The positive evaluations from experts, teachers, and students indicate that these materials, grounded in the ADDIE framework are effective and well-received. This suggests that similar digital tools has potential in transforming traditional teaching methods.

Abstract

Mastering tenses is a fundamental aspect of learning English; however, it remains a challenge for many learners. This Community Service Program that was conducted in the ninth-grade at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 aims to enhance the understanding and application of tenses through the use of an interactive board game. The method employed is a game-based learning approach, where participants actively engage in activities that encourage contextual comprehension of tenses. The program involves students as the primary participants and is conducted in several stages, including socialization, training, implementation, and evaluation. The results indicate that using a board game not only significantly improves students' understanding of tenses but also increases their motivation and engagement in learning. Thus, this method can serve as an effective alternative for teaching tenses in both formal and non-formal educational settings. Keywords: Tenses, Interactive Media, Board Game, English Learning

Abstract

This study investigates the speech functions found in the lyrics of “Blue” by Yung Kai. The song was selected for its expressive language in portraying longing, imagined affection, and emotional vulnerability. The aim of this study is to examine how interpersonal meaning is conveyed through the use of speech functions. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this research applies discourse analysis based on Halliday’s theory. The lyrics were segmented into clauses and analyzed to identify the types of mood (declarative, interrogative, imperative) and their corresponding speech functions (statement, question, offer, command). The results show that statements are the most frequently used, serving to express emotions, beliefs, and personal commitment. Questions represent uncertainty and longing, while offers and commands indicate emotional closeness and desire. The study concludes that beyond entertainment, the song functions as a medium for expressing deep emotional experiences. This highlights the role of song lyrics as a form of interpersonal communication and emotional expression in contemporary music.

Abstract

This study analyzes the speech functions in the "I Lost Gwen" scene from the film Spider-Man: No Way Home using Halliday’s interpersonal metafunction. It focuses on how statements, questions, offers, and commands convey emotional pain, compassion, and mutual understanding. A qualitative descriptive method was applied to 14 clauses from a 91:36-minute film segment known for its emotional impact and virality. The findings show a dominance of congruent speech functions realized through declarative moods, reflecting Peter Parker’s expression of loss and vulnerability. Metaphorical realizations in clauses 7, 8, and 14 reveal indirect meanings, such as self-directed commands and disguised warnings, highlighting internal conflict and emotional nuance. The study demonstrates that speech functions choices reflect deeper interpersonal meanings and contribute to emotional depth in cinematic dialogue.

Drawing from an analysis of ten scholarly publications spanning 2019 to 2023, key tools identified include the Android-based Lampung dictionary, "Nusantara in Your Hand" for Javanese and Madurese, and the Muyu-Indonesian-English Dictionary App. These tools engage communities through initiatives like the Balinese Language Digital Dictionary and BASAbali Wiki, utilizing platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and YouTube for cultural preservation. Implementation strategies encompass a variety of mediums: mobile apps tailored for Lampung, Javanese, and Madurese speakers; comprehensive online platforms like the Balinese Language Digital Dictionary and BASAbali Wiki; interactive resources such as LearnJavaneseOnline.com; and dynamic social media engagement on WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Utilizing modern technology, these tools document, teach, and sustain regional languages, enhancing accessibility and fostering community engagement. Their effectiveness lies in promoting community involvement, integrating into educational frameworks, and gaining support from governments and local communities, thus playing a crucial role in safeguarding Indonesia's linguistic heritage and cultural identity. In conclusion, digital tools present significant progress in preserving Indonesia's linguistic diversity, requiring strategies that address socio-cultural and technical challenges, prioritize community involvement, foster collaboration across sectors, improve digital infrastructure, and promote sustainable practices to ensure long-term success in language revitalization efforts.
