<![CDATA[This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The objective of this study was to find out the students’ ability in identifying nominal and verbal sentences. The subject of the research was of grade VIII at SMP Teladan Sei Rampah academic year 2018-2019. The total number the subject was 20 students. To obtain data, a grammar test was administered to the students. After the data had been analyzed, it was found that the students were able to identify nominal and verbal sentences in English. Thus, it was concluded that the students’ of grade VIII at SMP Teladan Sei Rampah academic year 2018-2019 were able to identify nominal and verbal sentences in English.]]>

<![CDATA[Presidential debate is one of an interesting examples to be analyzed in terms of politeness strategies. This research analyzed the politeness strategies used by the presidential candidates of Indonesia in a presidential debate program during the election period in 2019. This research employed qualitative descriptive. The data were in the form of spoken utterances which were collected from the debate participants. The sources of the data in this research were the videos and transcripts of the second and the fourth presidential debates taken from youtube and google. The data were analyzed using data condensation, data displayed, drawing and verifying conclusion. The results of the research showed that the presidential candidates used several types of politeness strategies and realizations of politeness. There were four types of politeness strategies found in the debates; they were Bald-On Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, and Off Record. In realizations of politeness strategies, there were 30 sub-strategies realized in the second debate and 33 sub-strategies realized in the fourth debate. Positive Politeness was found as the dominant strategy since the candidates wanted to omit any gaps, give good sense, choose words selectively and convey their campaign.]]>

<![CDATA[This study dealt with critical discourse analysis of SBY’s international speech text. The objective of this study was to describe social cognition, ideology, and social context used by SBY in his international speech. This study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study were taken from SBY’s international speech text. The texts were analyzed by using Van Dijk’s discourse analysis concept by classifiying the elements of the text into Van Dijk’s table. Based on the study, it was found that the social cognition used was the event social cognition, ideology used was the ideology of Pancasila democracy, and the social context used was the diction in accordance with the social status of the invited guests. It could be concluded that the diction chosen by SBY was adjusted to the social status of the guests who were present in the 19th ASEAN Summit and also represented interests of people.]]>

<![CDATA[The objective of this research was to investigate if BIGBOX application significantly affected students’ reading comprehension at SMK Swasta Yaspenmas Sei Lepan. The research design used was experimental research. The population of this research was the whole students of the tenth grade which were distributed into two parallel classes, namely X-1 and X-2. The sampling technique used was cluster random sampling. It was obtained that X1 was selected as the experimental group and X-2 was selected as the control group. Each class consisted of 30 students, thus the total sample was 60 students. The experimental group was taught reading comprehension using BIGBOX application while the control group was taught in traditional way. The research instrument used was a reading test with multiple choices. The data obtained were analyzed by using statistical analysis of t-test formula. It was found out that the t-observed value was 2.184 and the t-table value was 2.002 at level of significance P= 0.05 and df=58. Based on the value obtained, the hypothesis testing proved that the alternative hypothesis was accepted and null hypothesis was rejected. The research concluded that BIGBOX application effected students’ reading comprehension.]]>

<![CDATA[The objective of this research is to find out if Herringbone Technique significantly affects students’ reading comprehension of recount text. The design applied in this research was experimental research. The population of this research was the eleventh grade of SMA Al-Hidayah Medan. There were two parallel classes: XI-A and XI-B. Each class consisted of 30 students; thus, the total number of population was 60 students. The whole population was taken as the sample. Cluster random sampling technique was applied to select the group as the research sample. Class XI-A was selected as experimental group and class XI-B was selected as control group. The instrument used to collect the data was multiple-choice test consisted of 20 items. The data were analyzed by using t-test. It was obtained that tobserved value was higher than that of ttable (3.46 > 2.00) with the degree of freedom df = 58 at the level of significance α = 0.05. It meant that Ha was accepted and Ho was successfully rejected. Thus, it can be concluded that Herringbone Technique significantly affected students’ reading comprehension of recount text.]]>

<![CDATA[The objective of the study was to find out the roles of parents in online learning of English subject during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study was conducted at SMK SPP SNAKMA Muhammadiyah Tanjung Anom during academic year 2021-2022. Descriptive qualitative research design was used to figure out the problems, namely (1) parents’ roles in guiding children and (2) how parents’ guide their children in online learning of English subject during the Covid-19 pandemic. The instrument employed in this study was interview sheet. The subjects of the study were the students’ parents and the English teachers. The first problem was answered through the analysis of interview result and found out that there were 5 roles of parents in guiding their children during online learning of English subject. The roles were as an educator (17%), as a driving force (25%), as a role model (0%), as friend (8%), as a supervisor (42%) and as a counselor (8%). The role of parents as supervisor was the dominant role found in online learning of English subject during the Covid-19 pandemic. The second problem was answered as well through the analysis of interview sheet and it was obtained that the parents’ roles in guiding the children in online learning were still low. The students’ parents had low understanding and background education regarding the implementation of online learning by their children.]]>

<![CDATA[This research aims at analyzing theme and rheme of the viral dialogue of the series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story and evaluating the success of the viral dialogue of the series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. This study was conducted because the dialogue went viral and many people are impressed by the meaning of the dialogue. This study was conducted by employing qualitative approach. The data of this research were the viral dialogue of the series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story episode 6. The data were collected by using observation. The data were analyzed by comparing, describing, classifying and displaying by using table and description. The results showed that there were 5 Unmarked Simple Theme (55,5%), 3 Unmarked Multiple Theme (33,3%), no Marked Simple Theme found in the dialogue and 1 Marked Multiple Theme (11,1%). Based on the data, it is textually found the text is dominated with UST (Unmarked Simple Theme). The reason for this theme to be dominant was the function of “markedness” which is to give special status within the clauses. Contextually, the dialogue is about a romantic relationship between Queen Charlotte and a guy named George. The guy expresses his true feelings towards Charlotte and his desire to love her for life. The field of the text is romantic love or a romantic relationship. The dialogue has successfully conveyed the message by the mode of primarily declarative and expressive.]]>

<![CDATA[Tujuan Pelatihan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas di SMA Gelora Pancasila di Kabupaten Serdang Bedagai untuk memberikan pelatihan agar guru-guru di SMP Glora Pancasila Kabupaten Serdang bedagai dapat melakukan penelitian tindak kelas. Sehingga uraian permasalahan yang dihadapi dapat dikonstruksikan secara ilmiah. Jumlah peserta pelatihan sebanyak 20 orang guru dan 4 tenaga kependidikan. Pelatihan dilakukan secara intensif disetiap minggu. Nantinya dapat dijadikan sebagai acuan dalam penyelesaian masalah yang serupa. Baik di wilayah regional maupun nasional, pelatihan yang dilakukan kepada guru agar hasil PTK yang dilakukan dapat di terbitkan sebagai jurnal penelitian. Hasil pengabdian masyarakat ini berupa naskah laporan yang tertulis mengenai hasil ketercapaian guru-guru dalam pelatihan yang diberikan berupa uraian deskriptif kuantitatif mengenai tingkat kepuasan dan keberhasilan guru-guru dalam pelatihan yang diberikan. Hasil yang diperoleh mengenai pelatihan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas di SMA Gelora Pancasila di Kabupaten Serdang Bedagai dideskripsikan pada aspek kepuasan kepada narasumber sebesar 89% dengan kriteria sangat baik, aspek pemahaman materi yang dijelaskan oleh narasumber 85% dengan kategori sangat baik. Dan tingkat pengetahuan setelah mendapatkan pelatihan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas di SMA Gelora Pancasila di Kabupaten Serdang Bedagai sebesar 87%. Hasil pelatihan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas di SMA Gelora Pancasila di Kabupaten Serdang Bedagai yang telah dilakukan keseluruhannya menunjukan hasil yang positif.]]>

<![CDATA[Solusi yang ditawarkan untuk pelatihan pembuatan bahan ajar berbasis website adalah dengan melakukan tutorial, workshop, dan simulasi di sekolah tersebut namun dengan menerapkan protokoler kesehatan. Hal ini akan membantu mitra sebagai sebuah lembaga pendidikan untuk memper kaya kemampuan literasi tenaga pengajarnya meningkatkan kreativitasnya dengan memanfaatkan kemajuan teknologi dan akses internet yang ada. Nantinya dapat diterapkan oleh guru-guru dalam kegiatan pembelajaran. Solusi yang disepakati oleh pengusul dan mitra adalah memberikan pelatihan pembuatan bahan ajar berbasis website dengan melakukan tutorial, workshop, dan simulasi di sekolah tersebut. Dampak yang dihasilkan dari pemberian pelatihan pembuatan bahan ajar berbasis website tersebut pada sekolah mitra adalah semakin bertambahnya wawasan dan kreativitas guru dalam mengajar di tengah situasi pandemi Covid-19. Memancing minat dan ketertarikan siswa, meningkatkan hasil belajar siswa, membangkitkan gairah belajar siswa yang sempat lesu akibat aktivitas daring yang kurang menarik minat siswa, serta guru mampu meninggalkan literasi mereka dalam bidang teknologi dan informasi dalam situasi pendemi saat ini.]]>

<![CDATA[Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilaksanakan dengan tujuan meningkatkan kemampuan berkomunikasi siswa SMK Gelora Pancasila dalam istilah-istilah bahasa Inggris bisnis (English for Business) khususnya pada materi telepon bisnis (business telephoning) sesuai dengan jurusan siswa yaitu Teknik Bisnis Sepeda Motor. Siswa-siswa SMK Gelora Pancasila selama ini masih mengenal istilah-istilah bahasa Inggris umum saja, untuk itu pelatihan ini diadakan agar siswa memiliki pengetahuan bahasa Inggris khusus yang berkaitan dengan bisnis agar dapat digunakan pada saat siswa berkarir nantinya. Metode yang digunakan dalam kegiatan ini adalah pelatihan bahasa Inggris berupa pelatihan pengucapan istilah-istilah (pronunciation), dilanjutkan dengan mencari istilah tersebut dalam bentuk word search, kemudian pelatih memberikan contoh dialog dalam bentuk situasi ketika sedang melakukan transaksi jual beli sepeda motor, seperti cara menelepon dan menerima telepon dari pembeli, pembeli menanyakan informasi seputar sepeda motor yang akan dibeli, serta menerima keluhan dari pembeli, lalu siswa diajak untuk membuat dialognya sendiri dan mempraktikkannya langsung dengan temannya atau role play, dan di akhir pelatihan, siswa diberikan evaluasi dalam bentuk kuis Kahoot. Hasil dari kegiatan ini adalah peningkatan kemampuan berkomunikasi siswa dalam English for Business khususnya mengenai dalam business telephoning pada bisnis sepeda motor. Sehingga dapat disimpulkan kegiatan ini memberikan manfaat yang signifikan bagi siswa.
