Abstract

The objective of this research is to improve students’ achievement in writing descriptive through collaborative writing. This research was conducted at SMP Negeri 28 Medan academic year 2018-2019 as the subject of researcher. The subject of this research consisted of 35 students of the eighth grade. The research was conducted with classroom action research. The research was conducted by dividing into two cycles with 6 meeting for each. The sources of data were qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data were collected by observation sheets, questionnaires and diary notes. Quantitative data were taken from tests, carried out at the end of every cycle. Based on the result of the data analysis there was an improvement of the result of the students’ achievement in writing descriptive text from each cycle. After doing test on cycle I, there was an improvement of the result of the students’ mean was 72.8 with 24 students who got successful score criteria above 70 or it was 69 % and 11 students who got unsuccessful score criteria above 70 or it was 31 %. Then, an improvement was done in second cycle after reflection in the first cycle, there was an improvement of students’ mean was 77.9 with 31 students who got successful score criteria above 70 or it was 89 % and 4 students who got unsuccessful score criteria above 70 or it was 11 %. In other words, the students’ achievement at writing descriptive text was improved. And based on questionnaire sheets, observation sheets, diary notes, and documentation, it showed that the expression and excitement of the students were also improved.

Abstract

This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The objective of this study was to find out the students’ ability in identifying nominal and verbal sentences. The subject of the research was of grade VIII at SMP Teladan Sei Rampah academic year 2018-2019. The total number the subject was 20 students. To obtain data, a grammar test was administered to the students. After the data had been analyzed, it was found that the students were able to identify nominal and verbal sentences in English. Thus, it was concluded that the students’ of grade VIII at SMP Teladan Sei Rampah academic year 2018-2019 were able to identify nominal and verbal sentences in English.

Abstract

Presidential debate is one of an interesting examples to be analyzed in terms of politeness strategies. This research analyzed the politeness strategies used by the presidential candidates of Indonesia in a presidential debate program during the election period in 2019. This research employed qualitative descriptive. The data were in the form of spoken utterances which were collected from the debate participants. The sources of the data in this research were the videos and transcripts of the second and the fourth presidential debates taken from youtube and google. The data were analyzed using data condensation, data displayed, drawing and verifying conclusion. The results of the research showed that the presidential candidates used several types of politeness strategies and realizations of politeness. There were four types of politeness strategies found in the debates; they were Bald-On Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, and Off Record. In realizations of politeness strategies, there were 30 sub-strategies realized in the second debate and 33 sub-strategies realized in the fourth debate. Positive Politeness was found as the dominant strategy since the candidates wanted to omit any gaps, give good sense, choose words selectively and convey their campaign.

Abstract

This study dealt with critical discourse analysis of SBY’s international speech text. The objective of this study was to describe social cognition, ideology, and social context used by SBY in his international speech. This study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study were taken from SBY’s international speech text. The texts were analyzed by using Van Dijk’s discourse analysis concept by classifiying the elements of the text into Van Dijk’s table. Based on the study, it was found that the social cognition used was the event social cognition, ideology used was the ideology of Pancasila democracy, and the social context used was the diction in accordance with the social status of the invited guests. It could be concluded that the diction chosen by SBY was adjusted to the social status of the guests who were present in the 19th ASEAN Summit and also represented interests of people.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to investigate if BIGBOX application significantly affected students’ reading comprehension at SMK Swasta Yaspenmas Sei Lepan. The research design used was experimental research. The population of this research was the whole students of the tenth grade which were distributed into two parallel classes, namely X-1 and X-2. The sampling technique used was cluster random sampling. It was obtained that X1 was selected as the experimental group and X-2 was selected as the control group. Each class consisted of 30 students, thus the total sample was 60 students. The experimental group was taught reading comprehension using BIGBOX application while the control group was taught in traditional way. The research instrument used was a reading test with multiple choices. The data obtained were analyzed by using statistical analysis of t-test formula. It was found out that the t-observed value was 2.184 and the t-table value was 2.002 at level of significance P= 0.05 and df=58. Based on the value obtained, the hypothesis testing proved that the alternative hypothesis was accepted and null hypothesis was rejected. The research concluded that BIGBOX application effected students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out if Herringbone Technique significantly affects students’ reading comprehension of recount text. The design applied in this research was experimental research. The population of this research was the eleventh grade of SMA Al-Hidayah Medan. There were two parallel classes: XI-A and XI-B. Each class consisted of 30 students; thus, the total number of population was 60 students. The whole population was taken as the sample. Cluster random sampling technique was applied to select the group as the research sample. Class XI-A was selected as experimental group and class XI-B was selected as control group. The instrument used to collect the data was multiple-choice test consisted of 20 items. The data were analyzed by using t-test. It was obtained that tobserved value was higher than that of ttable (3.46 > 2.00) with the degree of freedom df = 58 at the level of significance α = 0.05. It meant that Ha was accepted and Ho was successfully rejected. Thus, it can be concluded that Herringbone Technique significantly affected students’ reading comprehension of recount text.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to find out the roles of parents in online learning of English subject during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study was conducted at SMK SPP SNAKMA Muhammadiyah Tanjung Anom during academic year 2021-2022. Descriptive qualitative research design was used to figure out the problems, namely (1) parents’ roles in guiding children and (2) how parents’ guide their children in online learning of English subject during the Covid-19 pandemic. The instrument employed in this study was interview sheet. The subjects of the study were the students’ parents and the English teachers. The first problem was answered through the analysis of interview result and found out that there were 5 roles of parents in guiding their children during online learning of English subject. The roles were as an educator (17%), as a driving force (25%), as a role model (0%), as friend (8%), as a supervisor (42%) and as a counselor (8%). The role of parents as supervisor was the dominant role found in online learning of English subject during the Covid-19 pandemic. The second problem was answered as well through the analysis of interview sheet and it was obtained that the parents’ roles in guiding the children in online learning were still low. The students’ parents had low understanding and background education regarding the implementation of online learning by their children.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to investigate whether the motivational dialogue from the movie "Barbie" is successful in terms of experiential function using a discourse analysis approach. The experiential function focuses on Process, Participant, and Circumstance. The movie ‘Barbie’ is chosen because its dialogue motivates and conveys moral lessons to the viewers. This study employs a qualitative research design. Data were collected through observation and documentation. The data were analyzed by employing several steps: separating the dialogue into clauses, analyzing the clauses in terms of experiential function, classifying the elements of experiential function, deriving patterns of experience, and evaluating the success of the dialogue. The analysis revealed there were 32 Processes, with the Verbal Process being the most dominant (40.62%), 37 Participants were identified, with Sayer being the most frequent at (37,14%), and 23 Circumstances, with Extent Circumstance being the most prevalent at (43.47%). Thus, the dialogue effectively motivates and creates an emotional bond with the viewers, fulfilling its intended experiential function. Through detailed analysis, it was revealed that the dialogue's use of Verbal Processes, Participant roles, and Circumstances contributes significantly to its motivational impact and emotional connection with the viewers.

Abstract

The goals of the research were to identify the many forms of symbolic language employed in the film "Moana" and to provide an analysis of the symbolic language's contextual significance. A descriptive qualitative approach was used to carry out the research in this study. The actors' and actresses' dialogues from the film Moana were analyzed using the text transcribed version of the film. Metaphor(25.66%), metonymy(12.38%), hyperbole(17.69%), personification(9.37%), simile(0.88%), irony(22.12%), symbolism(7.96%), and paradox (3.53%) were the eight forms of figurative language identified in the Moana animated film. In addition, the researchers found that the meaning of each figure of speech varied depending on the situation in which it was used.

Abstract

This study is concerned with lexical ambiguity in the @epicdadjokes Instagram posts that is perceived stylistically. This research has three objectives: (1) to identify the forms of lexical ambiguity, (2) to interpret the meaning of lexical ambiguity represented through wordplay, and (3) to find out the effects of lexical ambiguity represented through wordplay on the meanings from posts of the account. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. It was concerned with the posts from the @epicdadjokes Instagram Posts. The primary source of the data was the posts. The primary instrument was the researcher who acted as the data collector, data analyst and data interpreter. Then, the secondary instrument was the data sheet. In collecting the data, she selected the data, categorize and classified the data into three data sheets. In analyzing the data, she identified the data into the categorizations, and interpreted each datum based on the theories. The findings of the research show there are homonymy (83.33%) and polysemy (16.67%). Meanwhile, among the three sub-types of homonymy, only two of them occur, absolute homonymy (37.50%) and homophone (45.83%). The absent type is homograph. Then, there are three types of wordplay that occur in the posts i.e. Homonymic pun (25.00%), homophonic pun (29.17%), and the recursive pun (45.83%). Meanwhile, homographic pun, compound pun and visual pun does not occur. Finally, the two effects of lexical ambiguity are humorous (83.4%) and ironic effects (16.6%).
