Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out The Effect of Picture Series on Students’ Achievement in Writing Recount. The design applied in this research was experimental research design.  This research was conducted in X grade at MAS Alwashliyah 12 Perbaungan Academic Year 2022-2023 . There were two classes of X grade. Each class consisted of 32 students. So, the total number of population were 64 students. Cluster-sampling technique was employed in taking the sample. X -2 was selected as experimental group and X  -1 was selected as control group. There are 64 students were chosen as the sample. The instrument used to collect the data was writing test. The data were analyzed by using t-test. After the data had been analyzed, it was obtained tobserved value  was higher than that of ttable (1.57 > 1.671) with the degree of freedom df = 58 at the level of significance α = 5. It meant that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. In conclusion, Picture Series significantly affected on students’ achievement in writing recount. Keywords: Picture Series, Writing, Recount .

Abstract

Kemampuan berfikir kritis memainkan peran yang penting dalam meningkatkan kualitas pemahaman membaca. Oleh karena itu, maksud dari pelaksanaan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam berpikir secara kritis ketika membaca teks, dengan menggunakan pendekatan Fantastic Five Strategies. Kegiatan ini difokuskan pada penerapan Fantastic Five Strategies selama proses membaca, yang mencakup lima strategi yaitu menghubungkan (Connecting), bertanya (Questioning), menyimpulkan (Inferring), menjelaskan (Clarifying), dan mensintesis (Synthesizing). Metode yang diterapkan dalam kegiatan ini adalah pelatihan membaca cerita dalam bahasa Inggris menggunakan pendekatan Fantastic Five Strategies. Siswa diajak untuk berfikir secara kritis saat membaca teks, dan setelahnya mereka diminta untuk membuat kelima strategi Fantastic Five dari teks yang telah dibaca. Dampak dari kegiatan pengabdian ini terlihat dalam peningkatan kemampuan berfikir kritis siswa dalam membaca, hal ini tercermin dari hasil tes yang dilakukan terhadap siswa. Siswa mampu mengaplikasikan kelima strategi Fantastic Five dari teks yang diberikan. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa kegiatan ini memberikan manfaat yang signifikan dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berfikir kritis siswa saat membaca.

Abstract

This research examines the capacity of ChatGPT 3.5 in generating reading comprehension questions for academic texts, with a focus on their alignment with higher-order cognitive skills as per Bloom’s Taxonomy. A paper-based test comprising 30 multiple-choice questions was constructed using ChatGPT 3.5, based on three selected TOEFL ITP reading comprehension passages. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, integrating qualitative content analysis to assess the cognitive level of each question and quantitative methods to analyze student responses. Data collection involved administering the AI-generated questions to students and scoring their responses. Analysis techniques included Pearson correlation coefficients to determine validity and reliability analysis using Cronbach's Alpha to measure internal consistency. The findings revealed that ChatGPT 3.5 is capable of producing questions that cover a range of cognitive levels, from analysis to creation, however only 10 out of 30 questions met the validity criteria, indicating a need for improvement in the AI's question generation process. The reliability of these questions was moderate, suggesting a reasonable level of internal consistency. The study concludes that while AI-generated questions show promise in educational assessments, ongoing improvement of AI models is necessary to enhance their effectiveness. The implications of this research are significant for the future integration of AI in educational settings, indicating a potential role for AI in developing meaningful assessment tools. The study recommends future research to explore various question types and incorporate student feedback to optimize the effectiveness of AI in education.

Abstract

This study investigates metacognitive strategies employed by English language learners (ELLs) during listening comprehension activities. The objectives were to identify the metacognitive strategies commonly employed by English language learners during listening comprehension activities and to examine their awareness of the importance of metacognitive strategies in improving listening skills. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study collected data through questionnaires and interviews from university students in Medan, Indonesia. This method provided a comprehensive understanding of the strategies used by learners and their perceptions of the strategies' effectiveness. The results reveal that ELLs actively engage in metacognitive strategies, specifically planning, monitoring, and evaluating, to enhance their listening comprehension. The quantitative data from the questionnaires and qualitative insights from the interviews indicate a high level of awareness among students regarding the importance of these strategies. Ethical measures were strictly observed to ensure participant anonymity. This study contributes to the field of language education by highlighting the critical role of metacognitive strategies in listening comprehension and providing empirical evidence of their use among ELLs.

Abstract

This systematic literature review examines specific digital tools such as mobile apps, online dictionaries, and social media platforms, evaluating their implementation and effectiveness in preserving endangered languages in Indonesia. Drawing from an analysis of ten scholarly publications spanning 2019 to 2023, key tools identified include the Android-based Lampung dictionary, "Nusantara in Your Hand" for Javanese and Madurese, and the Muyu-Indonesian-English Dictionary App. These tools engage communities through initiatives like the Balinese Language Digital Dictionary and BASAbali Wiki, utilizing platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and YouTube for cultural preservation. Implementation strategies encompass a variety of mediums: mobile apps tailored for Lampung, Javanese, and Madurese speakers; comprehensive online platforms like the Balinese Language Digital Dictionary and BASAbali Wiki; interactive resources such as LearnJavaneseOnline.com; and dynamic social media engagement on WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Utilizing modern technology, these tools document, teach, and sustain regional languages, enhancing accessibility and fostering community engagement. Their effectiveness lies in promoting community involvement, integrating into educational frameworks, and gaining support from governments and local communities, thus playing a crucial role in safeguarding Indonesia's linguistic heritage and cultural identity. In conclusion, digital tools present significant progress in preserving Indonesia's linguistic diversity, requiring strategies that address socio-cultural and technical challenges, prioritize community involvement, foster collaboration across sectors, improve digital infrastructure, and promote sustainable practices to ensure long-term success in language revitalization efforts.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to investigate whether the motivational dialogue from the movie "Barbie" is successful in terms of experiential function using a discourse analysis approach. The experiential function focuses on Process, Participant, and Circumstance. The movie ‘Barbie’ is chosen because its dialogue motivates and conveys moral lessons to the viewers. This study employs a qualitative research design. Data were collected through observation and documentation. The data were analyzed by employing several steps: separating the dialogue into clauses, analyzing the clauses in terms of experiential function, classifying the elements of experiential function, deriving patterns of experience, and evaluating the success of the dialogue. The analysis revealed there were 32 Processes, with the Verbal Process being the most dominant (40.62%), 37 Participants were identified, with Sayer being the most frequent at (37,14%), and 23 Circumstances, with Extent Circumstance being the most prevalent at (43.47%). Thus, the dialogue effectively motivates and creates an emotional bond with the viewers, fulfilling its intended experiential function. Through detailed analysis, it was revealed that the dialogue's use of Verbal Processes, Participant roles, and Circumstances contributes significantly to its motivational impact and emotional connection with the viewers.

Abstract

The goals of the research were to identify the many forms of symbolic language employed in the film "Moana" and to provide an analysis of the symbolic language's contextual significance. A descriptive qualitative approach was used to carry out the research in this study. The actors' and actresses' dialogues from the film Moana were analyzed using the text transcribed version of the film. Metaphor(25.66%), metonymy(12.38%), hyperbole(17.69%), personification(9.37%), simile(0.88%), irony(22.12%), symbolism(7.96%), and paradox (3.53%) were the eight forms of figurative language identified in the Moana animated film. In addition, the researchers found that the meaning of each figure of speech varied depending on the situation in which it was used.

Abstract

This study is concerned with lexical ambiguity in the @epicdadjokes Instagram posts that is perceived stylistically. This research has three objectives: (1) to identify the forms of lexical ambiguity, (2) to interpret the meaning of lexical ambiguity represented through wordplay, and (3) to find out the effects of lexical ambiguity represented through wordplay on the meanings from posts of the account. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. It was concerned with the posts from the @epicdadjokes Instagram Posts. The primary source of the data was the posts. The primary instrument was the researcher who acted as the data collector, data analyst and data interpreter. Then, the secondary instrument was the data sheet. In collecting the data, she selected the data, categorize and classified the data into three data sheets. In analyzing the data, she identified the data into the categorizations, and interpreted each datum based on the theories. The findings of the research show there are homonymy (83.33%) and polysemy (16.67%). Meanwhile, among the three sub-types of homonymy, only two of them occur, absolute homonymy (37.50%) and homophone (45.83%). The absent type is homograph. Then, there are three types of wordplay that occur in the posts i.e. Homonymic pun (25.00%), homophonic pun (29.17%), and the recursive pun (45.83%). Meanwhile, homographic pun, compound pun and visual pun does not occur. Finally, the two effects of lexical ambiguity are humorous (83.4%) and ironic effects (16.6%).

Abstract

Bahasa Inggris sudah diajarkan sejak usia dini sejak tingkat sekolah dasar. Hal ini dilakukan untuk mengikuti perkembangan zaman yang semakin global serta untuk memperkenalkan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa internasional. Namun, pada kenyataannya, hingga saat ini banyak siswa/i masih beranggapan bahwa bahasa Inggris adalah mata pelajaran yang sulit, serius, menakutkan, bahkan menjemukan. Fenomena ini juga terjadi pada anak-anak terdampak erupsi Gunung Sinabung di Kawasan Relokasi Siosar, Desa Simacem, Kabupaten Karo. Mereka kurang menguasai bahasa Inggris dasar, lebih dominan berbicara bahasa lokal, serta rendahnya rasa percaya diri mereka untuk berbicara bahasa Inggris akibat metode pengajaran bahasa Inggris yang kurang menarik yang diperoleh di sekolah serta trauma akibat menjadi korban erupsi Gunung Sinabung yang menyebabkan mereka harus direlokasi ke daerah pengungsian. Untuk itu, tim pengabdian terdorong untuk melakukan kegiatan pemulihan trauma berupa pelatihan bahasa Inggris bagi anak-anak terdampak erupsi Gunung Sinabung dengan metode pembelajaran Fun Communicative Learning through games and nursery rhymes. Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk membantu masyarakat khususnya anak-anak usia sekolah dasar agar kejadian atau bencana yang terjadi selama ini tidak berdampak buruk dan berlanjut pada stabilitas mental dan emosional ke depan. Dengan kegiatan ini diharapkan rasa percaya diri anak-anak akan terbangun kembali karena adanya bentuk perhatian lain berupa Trauma Healing.
