Abstract

Research on adsorption of Pb and Cu metals from used lubricants has been carried out using cellulose acetate-chitosan blending which aims to determine the best ratio and pH between cellulose acetate and chitosan which can adsorb metal Pb and Cu from used lubricants. Cellulose acetate was synthesized through the acetylation method using cellulose extracted from palm fiber coir. The obtained cellulose acetate is brown fine powder with a yield of 62% and has a water content of 20%. Cellulose acetate was characterized using FT-IR while adsorption of Pb and Cu metals from used lubricants using AAS. The results of FT-IR analysis showed the formation of cellulose acetate with an absorption band of 1637.56 cm-1 which proved the presence of carbonyl groups (C = O). The AAS results showed that the best ratio and pH to absorb Pb and Cu metals in used lubricants is 3:1 with pH 6. Keywords: palm oil coir, acetate cellulose, chitosan, used lubricants

Abstract

Tofu pulp which generally becomes waste can be used as a source of protein concentrate. Protein concentrates from tofu pulp have been obtained at various ratios of tofu pulp: ammonium sulfate and ammonium sulfate salt concentration. The research was conducted to obtain the highest protein yield and content of tofu pulp protein concentrate. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with the independent variable being the ratio of tofu pulp filtrate: ammonium sulfate (1:2, 1:3, 1:4, 1:5, 1:6, and 1:7 (v/v)) and concentrations of ammonium sulfate (30, 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80%), while the dependent variables were the yield of protein concentrate and protein content. Production of protein concentrate used the salting-out method with ammonium sulfate salt. The ratio of tofu pulp: ammonium sulfate 70% obtained the best ratio of 1:5 with a yield of 41.6% and protein content of 84.58%. Tofu pulp as industrial waste can be a potential source of protein concentrate because it has a high protein content.

Abstract

The lack of learning resources, especially practicum infrastructure, causes practicum in schools to not be implemented. The subject of acid-base material which should be in an experiment cannot be applied due to limited indicators. The results of observations in the field showed that students could not distinguish between acidic and basic solutions because they did not get a lesson. Chemistry subject teachers in several high schools in Donggala Regency do not carry out practical work on acid-base materials because they never used natural materials such as flowers as pH paper. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the understanding of teachers regarding the concept of acids and bases and natural materials that can be used as natural indicators to replace synthetic indicators. This service activity was attended by 10 participants consisting of chemistry teachers who are members of the chemistry MGMP of Donggala Regency. Service activities are carried out by understanding the concept of acid-base and the use of natural materials as natural indicators also demonstrating and guidance on making pH paper from natural materials (flowers). This activity provides additional knowledge for teachers in the use of natural materials as a substitute for synthetic indicators in acid-base material practicum so that the quality of learning is expected to increase.
