Abstract

Philosophy is one of the most important fundamental aspects in developing the 2013 curriculum to determine teaching and learning objectives and processes. Accordingly, textbooks should represent curriculum ideas. It must be developed in line with the philosophical foundation of the curriculum. It is to realize the objectives of teaching and learning that emphasize critical thinking and student character development. This study aimed to reveal the philosophical foundations of LKS (Lembar Kerja Siswa) in English ninth grade and its compatibility with the 2013 curriculum. LKS is an exercise guide for developing cognitive aspects and all learning aspects in the form of an experimental or demonstration guide. This study used inferential content analysis on six units of LKS-English in ninth grade, semester one, publisher by CV. Library Pillar. It examined six philosophical foundations in LKS-English of ninth grade: existentialism, essentialism, perennials, humanism, social reconstruction, and progressivism. It also examines six philosophical foundations in the 2013 curriculum, including essentialism, perennials, humanism, social reconstruction, progressivism, and idealism. So, there is a harmony between the philosophical foundation of the LKS-English of ninth grade and the 2013 Curriculum. The LKS-English and the 2013 curriculum focus on developing students' character and 21st-century skills, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, collaboration, creativity, and innovation.

Abstract

The accent is one of the characteristic forms of the language used for communication when outside or inside the language learning classroom, then understand difficulty listening to students through the Native and Non-Native Speaker Accent in L2 in the listening assessment requires a more thorough investigation. The purpose of this study to explore how extent students can understand native and non-native speakers with different accents and how they perceive about hearing difficulties toward Native speaker accent and Non-native speaker accent. This research focuses on 12th graders majoring in hospitality at state vocational high school in Bangkalan, Madura. The research data were collected through observation and interviews. The results of this study show that the clarity, speed and accent of native and non-native speakers (American) and non-native speakers (Indonesian) become difficulties and barriers for students to understand and complete their listening tasks. This is because they are used to hearing accents from non-natives speakers rather than accents from native speakers. Furthermore, when students took the American Accent English Test compared to the Indonesian Accent English Test, all scores were much lower

Abstract

Five dimensions of Online Learning Readiness Scale (OLRS) offers convincing quantification of online students’ readiness. Its modification, the addition of two more dimension, is even claimed to be applicable for blended learning environment. Nonetheless, quality of modified OLRS is questionable. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to assure the quality of OLRS after the modification. In order to do so, empirical validity and internal consistency testing were conducted. 42 participants were included for the testing. The result showed that there are four items which needs special attention. The reliability value is also slightly decreased, from .85 to .74. The value is not ideal, but still widely acceptable for research usage. In short, the OLRS modification insignificantly reduces the quality of its psychometric properties. Further research is recommended by the author to focus on reformulating the items in order to enhance its empirical validity and reliability simultaneously, or conducting other statistical test to maintain the quality of OLRS.

Abstract

In Indonesia, English teachers and lecturers have to pass specific number of TOEFL score as a passing card to carry out teaching activity. Yet, there is no further observation from researchers or government about how much the English teachers’ proficiency affects the classroom instruction capability. Hence, this research is worth pursuing to reveal information for teachers’ professional development. This study is a case study that aims to gather information about the relation between English teachers’ proficiency and teaching skills. The data were obtained from semi-structured interview and class observation. To analyse the data, the researchers coded the data manually to eliminate errors. There are two English lecturers from one private University in Malang, East Java, Indonesia as the participants of this study. They were selected purposefully based on their level of general proficiency in English. This study revealed that high level of English proficiency alone cannot be a single indicator for conducting effective English teaching and learning process. Teachers need to obtain both high level of language proficiency and own pedagogical skills to provide optimised learning and teaching environment. This research is seen as a fundamental framework for teachers to improve their English teaching perseverance.

Abstract

In dealing with syllabus design, teachers must recognize their roles in syllabus design since they are taking part in it. Consequently, this current study attempts to explore Indonesian secondary EFL teachers concerning their roles in syllabus design. It covers three points: their general perceptions, their boundaries, and their qualification as the EFL teacher in syllabus design. The main theory used in this study is by Nunan (2000) related to the roles in syllabus design. This study applied a qualitative approach using open-ended questionnaires and virtual interviews as the instrument of the study. A total of five respondents have participated in this current study.  The results found that the teachers believe that they have a role as the implementer and designer of syllabus design. Related to their boundaries in teaching English, all teachers create and develop the syllabus based on the student's needs. Besides, it discovers that teachers are likely to have the freedom to design their activities and materials based on the student's needs even though they should follow the basic element of the syllabus provided by the authorities. Finally, the teachers still need guidance and training in syllabus design since they have a fewer understanding of syllabus design.

Abstract

The current study is intended to explore the typology of other-initiated self-repair in term of its frequency of occurrence and to investigate the mechanism of self-repair in an academic setting. To obtain the required data, a classroom conversational analysis was conducted in which the researchers observed a group of graduate students (19 active EFL speakers) in a state university in East Java, Indonesia. Based on the qualitative data analysis, the results of the study revealed that all typologies of other-initiated selfrepair were used depending on the aims the interlocutors try to gain since all typologies have diverse aims and ways. Of all typologies, confirming checks were dominantly used by the participants. Regarding the mechanisms, three types of mechanisms were found; full two-cycle repair, background check, and short-cut repair sequence.

Abstract

The fact that teaching English in Indonesia is still driven by textbooks makes not many students have the ability to communicate in English and even they often experience mispronunciation. This study was conducted to find out how to teach allomorphs as a provision to strengthen knowledge of English pronunciation. In addition, this study also seeks to reveal how the challenges faced by EFL teachers in the Allomorph learning process. There are 3 stages that the teacher can do to teach allomorphs through narrative texts; introduction to phonetic symbols, reading the text, and analyzing and practicing the types of allomorphs. From the use of the selected narrative text, it reveals 3 types of allomorphs from 4 types that have been introduced to students in the form of past tense, plural number, and regular possessive. Some of the challenges and problems faced by EFL teachers in teaching English pronunciation, especially allomorphs, is the lack of student motivation to learn. In addition, EFL teachers still hold on to the old philosophy about the lack of importance of learning pronunciation, making this teaching even more difficult. The lack of class hours and the large number of students in EFL classes are also challenges for teachers.

Abstract

The supervisory practices, particularly in undergraduate thesis writing, have not received sufficient attention, specifically regarding their impact on EFL students writing apprehension and the potential gender differences in these dynamics. To fulfil this gap, this study examines the path coefficients among supervisory problem dimensions (research interests, different expectations, limited support, personal relationships, personal conflicts), writing self-efficacy, academic writing competence, toward writing apprehension, focusing on the potential gender differences among EFL students. A Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) analysis was performed on a total of 219 EFL students undertaking their undergraduate thesis writing. The study revealed supervisory problems through mediated variables of academic writing competence and writing self-efficacy influence writing apprehension (=0.214 and =0.509, respectively; p 0.000 for both). Furthermore, the multi-group analysis uncovered notable gender differences. In contrast with male students, in which only a few paths were statistically significant, all paths were found to be significant for female students. In particular, the path from supervisory problem to academic writing competence had the strongest impact on female students, indicating the heightened sensitivity to supervisory problems related to the students writing apprehension. These novel findings shed light on the gender difference impact on the academic writing process, and a more pronounced impact from supervisory problems on their writing apprehension frequently happened to female students. Accordingly, these findings highlight the importance of recognizing and addressing those differences in instructional strategies to promote a more encouraging and productive learning environment.
