Abstract

Writing is a productive skill in which each sentence should be organized to make meaningful writing. The English teacher of SMPN 2 Denpasar commonly used closedended test providing two different descriptive paragraphs and the students differentiate it. However, the test was quite simple and easy for the eighth grade students and it tended to assess reading. The present study aimed to figure out the descriptive paragraph writing ability of the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Denpasar in academic year 2018/2019 through dicto-comp. The research used ex post facto research design with descriptive analysis. The population was the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Denpasar totaling 333 students. There were 50 samples determined by using simple random sampling technique with lottery system. The obtained data were analyzed by using norm-reference measure of five standard value. The result showed that there were 72.00% of the samples who were successful and 28.00% of the samples under study were still unsuccessful in writing descriptive paragraph assessed by using dicto-comp.

Abstract

Pengembangan kurikulum dan implementasinya di dalam kelas membutuhkan dukungan penuh dari para guru supaya implementasinya menjadi sukses. Guru merupakan aspek penting dalam proses pengembangan dan pelaksanaan kurikulum. Untuk tujuan ini, semua guru seharusnya diberikan pelatihan berkelanjutan yang memungkinkan menjadi lebih professional dan lebih memahami kurikulum yang berlaku. Studi ini menemukan bahwa guru sangat antusias untuk memahami konsep-konsep kurikulum dan bersedia untuk mengadopsi nilai-nilai baru dari kurikulum merdeka dan menerapkannya dalam pembelajaran di kelas. Guru merasa bertanggung jawab untuk menerapkan perubahan kurikulum ini dalam proses pembelajaran di kelas secara intensif. Disamping itu, guru merasa memiliki peran penting dalam pengembangan dan pelaksanaan kurikulum di sekolah. Studi ini menyarankan bahwa pelatihan yang lebih intensif perlu terus diberikan untuk meningkatkan pemahaman guru tentang implementasi kurikulum di kelas.

Abstract

This study endeavored to portray and make sense of the morpheme in the folklore of Lutung Kasarung, the structural and functional classification of affixes and its impact on the analysis for EFL learners. This study was planned as a qualitative study. This study was led on the folklore of Lutung Kasarung. The data were gathered by perusing the text of Lutung Kasarung, then, underlying the words in the text which contain morpheme, base, stem, root and affixes, after that, it is revamped the information methodically. The impact of producing a morphological study on folklore text for EFL learners is, improving their vocabulary, developing their knowledge of word structure, enhance their communication and writing skill. The examination was concerned about: morpheme, analysis of base, stem and root, and affixes. In first table (1) the researcher found 54 words with free and bound morphemes. In the second (2) table there are 52 words that have suffixes, 2 words have prefixes, and 1 word has prefix and suffix. Last table (3) researchers found that are 49 words called base and 5 words have suffixes called stem and the last thing all of words that total 54 words have called root.

Abstract

This research was aimed to know: “There was significant correlation between students‟ habit in watching English movie and their vocabulary mastery SMPN 9 Denpasar in 2021/2022 academic year. The researcher methodology of this research was a quantitative. The population of the research was the ninth grade students of SMPN 9 Denpasar in 2021/2022 academic year, the number of students was 415 students. The sample of this research were 40 students. For collecting the data, researcher used two instruments which were questionnaire for students' habit in watching English movie and multiple choice test for vocabulary mastery. The result showed that there was significant correlation between students' habit in watching English movie and their vocabulary mastery in the ninth-grade of SMPN 9 Denpasar in academic year 2021/2022 with the correlation value was 0.633. It lied between 0.600-0.800 which was in a sufficient level.

Abstract

The study investigated whether, and how, Communicative Language Teaching Approaches (CLTA) significantly influenced students’ academic emotions and achievement in self-directed distance learning. The participants were 76 university students in Denpasar. The data were collected through exam results and two questionnaires. Questionnaire A measured students’ learning intentions, self-encouragement, and motivation, while questionnaire B was the DASS 21. Pearson Correlation was used to analyze the effect of CLTA on student learning intention and performance, and their perception of depression, anxiety, and stress. Descriptive analysis was also performed to examine the students’ levels of negative emotions toward their academic experience. The quantitative results showed a significantly positive correlation between lecturers’ content-based instruction (CBI) and learning intention, rob (0.536) rcv (0.226); lecturers’ communicative language teaching (CLT) correlated positively with learning encouragement, rob (0.655) rcv (0.226); and lecturers’ task-based language teaching (TBLT) correlated positively with motivation, rob (0.671) rcv (0.226). This means that the CLTA strategy strongly and positively encouraged students to study and decreased the students' experiences of negative emotions. The study revealed that the more intensively the CLTA is applied, the fewer students feel depressed, and the better the students’ achievement is. The study suggests that CLTA activates affective, cognitive, and conative norms even in online learning environments.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is the act of understanding and comprehending the text. The readers need to understand and find the meaning of the text. This study was conducted to determine whether Collaborative Strategic Reading could improve the reading comprehension of eighth-grade students at SMPN 2 Denpasar. The subjects of this study were the eighth-grade students of SMPN 2 Denpasar, consisting of 41 students. Classroom action research is used in this study, which consists of two cycles with two sessions; each cycle consists of initial reflection, planning, action, observation, and reflection. The result of the study shows that the mean score for pre-test was 65.75; post-test I was 74.87; and post-test II was 78.41. The researchers also distributed a questionnaire to the students, and the result showed a positive response from the students about implementing Collaborative Strategic Reading. It can be concluded that a collaborative strategy could improve reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the impact of characterization and intrinsic elements on the lion king movie (2019) for EFL learners in the literary work of The Lion King movie. The movie genres of The Lion King are adventure, drama, and animation. This movie is a type of fable that talked about the struggle of a brave lion cub who was exiled to the middle of the forest and fights to reclaim his throne. Researchers obtained data from the appearance, characters, and dialogue in the movie The Lion King by using qualitative methods. Based on the results of this research, the researcher found five intrinsic elements namely theme, character, plot, setting, and point of view, and the researcher also got some positive impacts from the movie The Lion King for EFL learners.

Abstract

Abstrak Penelitian berbasis PTK selama 6 bulan ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tingkat kompetensi siswa, guru dan pegawai di SMPN 2 Mengwi menggunakan hardskill bahasa Inggris sederhana. Kemandirian bilingual dilaksanakan melalui penerapan metode behaviorist, komunikatif dan konstuktivisme disetiap kelas melalui guru bahasa Inggris disekolah itu. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam pengumpulan data melalui tes lisan bahasa Inggris siswa, guru dan para pegawai, kuesioner, chararacter check list dan lembaran pengamatan partisipasi. Keefektifan pendekatan Behaviorist Based Learning Simulation dianalisis pada nilai rata-rata 32 siswa, 15 guru dan 15 pegawai yang dikumpulkan secara acak. Dari beberapa pelatihan dan simulasi lisan, para guru dapat mengungkapkan perintah, salam, larangan dan kalimat sederhana berbahasa Inggris. Kemampuan mereka terukur dalam nilai rata-rata, yaitu pengetahuan 70, keterampilan 79 dan sikap bilingual mereka 42 dengan rata-rata 64 yang dikategorikan kurang. Ini disebabkan mereka memiliki kendala tatabahasa, pengucapan dan kosakata yang terbatas. Kemampuan bilingual bahasa Inggris pegawai masih dikategorikan kurang dengan rincian pengetahuan 57, keterampilan 75 dan sikap 41 dengan rata-rata 57 yang dikategorikan kurang. Sementara siswa menunjukkan peningkatan setiap sesi, yaitu: 73.04 dan 78.01. Nilai rata-rata siklus I mencapai nilai 75.55 yang dapat dikategorikan sedang. Hanya 50 persen dari siswa yang baru mencapai ketuntasan minimal. Setelah dilaksanakan umpan balik terhadap proses pembelajaran, siklus II dilanjutkan dan masing masing sesi mengalami peningkatan, yaitu: 79.13 dan 82.00. Nilai rata-rata dari kedua sesi ini adalah 81.00. Ini berarti kemampuan telah mengalami kemajuan yang pesat dan 80 persen dari siswa telah mencapai ketuntasan minimal, maka penelitian ini mengindikasikan keberhasilan BBLS dalam proses peningkatan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is a classroom action research which aimed at 1) investigating the improvement of the students’ reading comprehension after being treated by Affinity strategy and authentic reading materials and 2) investigating the students’ response about the implementation of Affinity strategy and authentic reading materials towards reading comprehension. For the accomplishment of the research, 41 X IS 2 freshmen of SMA N 7 Denpasar were involved within this research. In garnering the data, reading comprehension test, observation sheet, interview guide, and questionnaire were used as the research instruments. Afterwards, the gained data was analyzed by means of qualitatively and quantitatively descriptive analysis. The first finding of the research is Affinity strategy and authentic reading materials were able to enhance the students’ reading comprehension. It was proven by the mean score gained at the cycle I was 69.65 which was lower than the mean score in cycle II that was 78.75. Both of the mean scores were higher than the mean score of the pre-test which was 63.17. The second finding of the research is that there was a positive response from the students towards the implementation of Affinity strategy and authentic reading materials. This finding was supported by the result of the interview and the questionnaire. The students felt at ease to undergo learning and teaching process within the implementation of Affinity strategy. Affinity strategy assisted the students to construct their knowledge about the passages through connecting their prior knowledge and peers. Moreover, the authentic reading materials provided the students with a real language classroom. Key Words: Authentic reading materials, Affinity strategy, reading comprehension

Abstract

Reading is faced as a difficult activity to do. The preliminary study presented that the eighth-grade students of SMPN 1 kediri in the academic year 2022/2023 are difficult to identify general information, specific information, textual meaning, and textual reference. Looking at the prior condition, this research aims at knowing the students’ improvement after being treated with read-ask-put (rap) strategy. Therefore, classroom action research was considered to be undergone in two cycles. The instruments were tests and a questionnaire. The data was analyzed by looking at the result of the tests: pre-test and post-tests. The results showed that there occurred improvement from the mean score of the pre-test to the post-tests. It is in line with the result of the questionnaire which showed positive responses. Further rap strategy implementation is needed to be integrated with other language skills.
