Abstract

Porphyromonas gingivalis is one of the anaerobic gram-negative bacteria that causes dental and oral health problems that will cause periodontal disease, especially chronic periodontitis. Water henna leaf (Impatiens balsamina L) is one of the plants can be used as an antibacterial drug. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of the formulation of Gargarisma leaf extract of henna water against Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria. The method used in the antibacterial activity test is the diffusion method. The ethanol extract of henna leaf ethanol extract was tested, namely organoleptic test, homogeneity test, pH test and viscosity test. Then proceed with data analysis with One Way ANOVA. This study used 3 formulas with different extract concentrations of 10%, 15%, and 20%, positive control (Chlorhexidine Gluconate), and negative control (aquades). The results of the antibacterial activity test of gargarisma preparations obtained that the average inhibition zone at 10% concentration was 10.97 mm, 15% concentration was 12.02 mm, 20% concentration was 13.76 mm, positive control was 17.9 mm, and aquadest negative control did not show any antibacterial activity.

Abstract

Treatment of COVID-19 patients is differentiated based on the degree of symptoms. The purpose of this study was to determine the therapeutic profile and appropriateness of prescriptions for outpatient COVID-19 at Wava Husada Hospital for the period January–July 202, based on the COVID-19 Management Protocol Book, Edition 2, 2021 and the Hospital Formulary. The research method was a retrospective descriptive observational study with a purposive sampling technique. The research instruments were medical records from SIMRS and patient prescriptions. The results showed that most patients were male (53%), aged 18-44 years (60%). The treatment profile of COVID-19 patients with asymptomatic and mild symptoms, according to therapeutic class, were vitamins (40.3%), cough and cold (12.7%), antipyretic analgesics (9.1%), supplements (8.2%), and macrolide antibiotics (7.6%). The most common types of drugs were vitamin C 500 mg non-acidic (11.8%), vitamin E 400 IU (9.8%) and vitamin D 5000 IU (8.1%). The prescription compliance is 92% of drugs according to the COVID-19 Management Protocol Book Ed. 2 of 2021 and the rationality compliance is 79%. The prescription compliance according to the Hospital Formulary has been fulfilled 100%.

Abstract

Sepsis is a critical health concern characterized by organ dysfunction due to uncontrolled host reactions to infections. The prevalence of microorganisms causing sepsis varies, with Gram-positive bacteria and fungal sepsis gaining significance. Sepsis often leads to acute kidney injury (AKI), and its association with sepsis is known as sepsis-associated AKI (SA-AKI). The "Daun Kentut" plant, known for its diverse bioactive compounds, has shown potential in combating inflammation and oxidative stress. In this study, histopathological changes in mouse kidneys induced by Escherichia coli were investigated. Hemorrhage was the primary change observed. Dehydration caused by E. coli infection potentially led to kidney injury through hormonal responses. The plant extract's anti-inflammatory potential, attributed to compounds like saponins and flavonoids, was also explored. The study emphasizes the need for understanding sepsis-related kidney damage and suggests possible preventive strategies using natural compounds.

Abstract

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition characterized by an abnormal immune response to infection, leading to high mortality rates in intensive care units (ICUs) worldwide. Caspase-3, a crucial enzyme in the apoptosis pathway, plays a significant role in sep-sis-related cellular damage. This study investigates the anti-apoptotic potential of Paederia foetida L. leaf extract by examining its effect on Caspase-3 expression in an Escherichia coli-induced sepsis mice model. Male Balb/c mice were divided into six groups, including positive control, negative control, and treatment groups receiving varying doses of the extract (100 mg/kgBW, 300 mg/kgBW, and 500 mg/kgBW). Caspase-3 expression in the spleen was measured after 24 hours of treatment. The results demonstrated a significant reduction in Caspase-3 expression, particularly in the group treated with 500 mg/kgBW of the extract, indicating its anti-apoptotic effect. These findings suggest that P. foetida leaf extract may serve as a potential therapeutic agent for reducing cell apoptosis in sepsis, warranting further investigation into its mechanisms and clinical pharmacological field.
