Abstract

Danau Sentarum National Park (DSNP) is one protected area having vital roles in supporting the community livelihood of Kapuas Hulu Regency and West Kalimantan Province. Unfortunately, its presence is currently threatened due to various activities and overlapping interests. Hence, the management of DSNP could not be carried out by a single institution, requiring the support of other institutions. A possible approach was to conduct Stakeholders Analysis. This study analyzed stakeholders interests on DSNP management. The study was conducted in DSNP and respondents were selected using snowball sampling. There were 18 stakeholders identified as being involved in the management of DSNP of which 5 were classified as subject, 1 as key player, 6 as context setter, and 6 as crowd. There were 3 relationships between each stakeholder that were identified, that of conflict, complementary, and cooperation. Generally, the identified stakeholders played roles consistent with their main tasks and function. However, to better manage DSNP, synchronization among stakeholders was still necessary.

Abstract

Forest ecosystem supports almost all of  the needs of  human being through its contribution of  tangible and intangible values.  Currently, the intangible values have gained less attention than the tangible values that cause  underestimation of  the total value of  the forest conversion into other more tangibly profitable usages, and miss-management of  the forest. One of  the important intangible values is the hydrological value that has been hardly calculated until now.  This research the intangible values of  water for household, transportation, agriculture and fishing in Mendalam Sub Watershed, Kalimantan. The economic values calculated based on market prices, opportunity costs and consumer’s surplus methods. The results showed that based on the    opportunity cost method the economic values of  the hydrological services was about Rp 8,043,706,237.50 per year. Meanwhile, the economic values of  the hydrological services based on the consumer’s surplus method gave lower value than the former method, i.e. Rp 8,031,351,664.60 per year. This study showed that the economic value of  the hydrological services was very high, which has not been included in the calculation yet. However, without trees there would be no forest and all other values included water value would not exist. Consequently, current forest management should put forest ecosystem as important to consider.

Abstract

Abstract

So far, coconuts are processed into copra, with a low selling value. Meanwhile, if coconut is processed into virgin coconut oil (VCO), the selling price will increase 5-12 times higher than copra. The objective of this service activity was to increase the knowledge and skills of the community in making VCO for coconut oil product diversification, so that it has the potential to increase their income. The method used is training with stages: delivery of material, discussion, and hands-on practice of making VCO. Partners as training participants were PKK members, totaling 25 people. The evaluation results show that the training activities were received positively by the partner. Community knowledge and skills in making VCO increased by 76.5% from 21.5% before training to 98% after attending training. If the community consistently diversifies coconut oil products into VCO, their income will increase, and in the future, their products can be expanded into body soap, shampoo, and body lotion based on VCO.

Abstract

Mangrove forest ecosystems resources could serve as income sources for the surrounding communities. However, the total economic value of these resourceshas yet to be recognized, calculated, and considered in managing and conserving mangrove forest ecosystems. This research aimed to estimate the direct economic value (timber, charcoal, aquatic biota, processed products, honey, and Nypa roof), indirect economic values (abrasion prevention, carbon stock, oxygen production, intrusion barrier), and optional economic value (biodiversity) of mangrove forest ecosystems. This research used two assumptions to calculate the total economic values: with and without timber utilization activities for charcoal production in the Unit XXXIII Kubu Raya Forest Management Unit (FMU). The results indicated that the indirect economic value had the highest percentages compared to the direct and optional economic values in both assumptions.
