Abstract

The objectives of this article are to seek the opportunity to enhance the local Indonesia timber material physical performances (encompassing the low-class quality of III and IV timbers with the Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) = 5,000 - 9,000 MPa) utilizing laminated composite technology to become higher-class timber quality (class II) with the Modulus of Elasticity (MOE)> 15,000 MPa so that it can be used as an alternative material for constructing the bridge mainframe structures (girder beams) especially for the Indragiri Hilir regency, Riau Province, Indonesia. This regency needs several hundred small-medium bridges for connecting 20 districts, 39 wards, and 197 villages using local materials such as local timbers. This laminating technology is not a new technology but the utilization of this technology for constructing the main bridges structures is challenging and limited to the implementation in the civil construction industrial sector. This study composed 2 types of the low-class quality (lcq) of timber materials (such as Shorea sp and Shorea peltata Sym) and 2 types of medium class-quality (mcq) ones (Dipterocarpus and Calophyllum) for constructing the main bridge structures. Based on the laboratory test results utilizing 80% of lcq materials and 20% mcq ones, these composite timber materials may increase the timbers MOE by 145% to 166% from the existing MOE value of the mcq solid timbers. Based on the simulations these laminated composites wooden bridge girders 2 x (70x20) m2, these timber materials have passed all the tests and the application of this technology may improve the lcq timber values and it could be used for an alternative material of the bridge girder's main structures.

Abstract

Simulation technology has assisted project stakeholders in predicting a range of the project results in the future under risks and uncertainties. The objectives of this article are to improve a comprehensive project planning in the perspective of the project scheduling by conducting simulations for the refurbishment of crude oil tank project risks using Monte Carlo simulations. The practical approaches for simulating the risks encompassed 3 stages: risk identification, assessment, and risk analysis using the Monte Carlo simulations. The implementation of Monte Carlo simulation in the form of stochastic approach however were not new, but the application of these approaches in the area of oil industrial projects was challenging. A Free Water Knock-Out (FWKO) tank project located in Duri, Indonesia was taken as a case study. The initial FWKO project duration was set up to be 180 working days, and it was delayed (up to 140% from the initial duration of the project planning). This study conducted deep questioner surveys from 25 oil industry stakeholders. It was identified 29 risk factors have been considered as the major causes of the project delay. The risk factors were then calculated qualitatively for performing risk indexes. Based on the risk simulations (after 1000 iterations) using Monte Carlo simulations utilizing @risk application package (under uncertainties) there was found that the possibility of this project would experience delays at the range of 47 days (126%) to 80 days (144%) from the initial project planning. This simulation had also identified the most sensitive activities causing project delays. The results was presented in the form of the spider graph diagram which assisted the project main stakeholders in developing a strategic decision during project planning phase.

Abstract

Hydrocarbon-impeded soil (HIS) is solid waste from spills or leaks during industrial activities that negatively impact the environment. This study aims to utilize HIS as catalyst support on MnO2 to degrade RhB (RhB) solution using Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and to determine the optimum conditions for the catalyst to degrade RhB. The catalyst was synthesized by reacting HIS, calcined with KMnO4 with various catalyst supports with high and low Total contain Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH). The process degradation of Rhodamine Solution was carried out with various catalysts, PMS, and RhB concentrations. The catalyst was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Nitrogen gas adsorption-desorption (BET), and Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy Disperse Spectroscope (SEM-EDX). In this study,  the best catalyst performance was MnO2@H-TPH, which could activate PMS to degrade RhB with dye removal of 98% in about 180 min, at conditions 10 g/L RhB, 0.1 g/L catalyst, and 3 g/L PMS with the activation energy of 16.3 kJ/mol.
