Abstract

Determinants of dietary diversity among female adolescents in Tasikmalaya CityBackground: Poor diet quality is the root cause of nutritional problems in adolescent girls, and dietary diversity is a determinant of diet quality. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the determinants of dietary diversity among female adolescents, encompassing individual, parental, and family factors. Methods: The research design employed a cross-sectional approach. Seven (30%) public junior high schools in Tasikmalaya City were randomly selected as research locations. Of the 391 female students selected as research subjects using proportional random sampling, 367 successfully participated in the research and completed the data analysis. The food diversity variable was measured using the Individual Dietary Diversity Score (IDDS) instrument, based on the results of two 24-hour non-consecutive recall methods. Determinants were measured using a structured questionnaire. Bivariate analysis employed Spearman's rank and chi-squared tests, while multivariate analysis utilized logistic regression modeling. Results: Most participants had a non-diverse diet (78.8%). Green, leafy vegetables and vitamin A-rich fruits were food groups consumed by fewer than a third of the subjects. The results of statistical tests revealed that variables such as pocket money, screen time duration, maternal education, maternal employment status, and family income were significantly related to the dietary diversity of adolescent girls (p < 0.05).Conclusions: The length of time female adolescents spent in front of screens (screen time) was the most significant variable influencing the dietary diversity of female adolescents. Therefore, it is necessary to promote healthy snacks made from vegetables and fruit that can be consumed while engaging in activities in front of the screen.

Abstract

Background: Adolescence, specifically among female is a high-risk period for weight gain and the incidence of being overweight. Lifestyle is considered a significant contributing factor to overweight in female adolescents. Objectives: This study aimed to examine the association between lifestyle, particularly daily activity and eating habits with the incidence of being overweight among female adolescents in Tasikmalaya City, West Java. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used with 275 subjects from seven state junior high schools selected by proportional random sampling. The data collected included demographics, lifestyle comprising daily activity, eating habits, as well as the incidence of being overweight, measured using the Body Mass Index-Age-Z score (BAZ). The association between lifestyle and overweight was evaluated using binary logistic regression. Results: The results showed that out of 275 subjects, 51 were overweight (18.5%) and 224 (81.5%) had normal weight. The risk factors for being overweight included sleeping less than seven hours a day (p=0.017; OR=3.020; 95%CI=1.218-7.486), mild physical activity (p=0.008; OR=19.251; 95%CI=2.170-170.790), breakfast frequency less than 3 times a week (p=0.033; OR=2.418; 95% CI=1.074-5.443) and frequent snacking habits (p=0.000; OR=15.022; 95% CI=5.922-43.846). Conclusions: Several lifestyles were found to significantly impact the incidence of being overweight among female adolescents, thus  suggesting the need to make lifestyle  modifications.

Abstract

Laryngomalacia is the most common cause of congenital stridor in infants and can lead to feeding difficulties, failure to thrive, and respiratory distress. Diagnosis typically requires flexible fiberoptic laryngoscopy, which more often than not, not available in resource-limited settings. We report a 12-day-old male infant who presented to the emergency department with apnea following a choking episode. He required cardiopulmonary resuscitation and was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. Clinical findings included chest retractions, cyanosis, weight loss (from 3500g at birth to 2700g), and feeding difficulties. Chest radiograph showed right-sided perihilar infiltrates consistent with aspiration pneumonia. Despite initial clinical improvement, the infant developed new-onset positional stridor on day ten of hospitalization, particularly when supine. These findings raised strong suspicion of underlying laryngomalacia. These signs raised a strong clinical suspicion of laryngomalacia. Due to absence of flexible fiberoptic laryngoscopy, diagnosis could not be confirmed. The infant was stabilised with supportive care and feeding adjustments before being referred to a tertiary center for definitive evaluation and management. This case highlights the importance of prompt recognition and early stabilisation of neonates with aspiration-related complications and suspected airway anomalies, particularly in low-resource settings. Timely referral is essential to prevent deterioration and guide appropriate long-term management.

Abstract

Adolescence is a critical period characterized by significant physical, cognitive, psychosocial, and emotional changes that influence dietary behaviors, including increased consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs), which may contribute to chronic disease risk. This study aimed to analyze the determinants of energy intake from UPFs among adolescent girls in Tasikmalaya City. This observational study employed a cross-sectional design, involving 514 adolescent girls from 10 public junior high schools in Tasikmalaya, selected through proportional random sampling. The energy intake from UPFs was collected using 2×24-hour food recalls, then separated using Nova 4. Information on potential determinants, including individual and interpersonal factors, was obtained through a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test and logistic regression. The results showed that one-fifth (21%) of participants had energy intake dominated by UPFs. Significant individual factors associated with the dominance of energy intake from UPFs included screen time duration (p = 0.001; OR = 2.424 [95% CI = 1.420-4.140]) and main meals (p = 0.019; OR = 1.996 [95% CI = 1.121-3.554]). Interpersonal factors related to the dominance of energy intake from UPFs were family status (p = 0.006; OR = 2.336 [95% CI = 1.275-4.282]). Screen time duration emerged as the strongest contributing factor. In conclusion, dominant energy intake from UPFs among adolescent girls is influenced by screen time duration, main meals, and family status. Parents need to pay attention to adolescent girls’ nutritional intake, especially limiting UPFs consumption. Policies regarding healthy snacks sold in school cafeterias also need to be implemented.
