Abstract

Currently, sterilization is the main choice for controlling the population of pets. But sterilization also has long-term effects. One of them is related to cholesterol levels in the blood. In this study, we investigated the effect of castration on changes in cholesterol levels. Twenty-three Wistar rats aged 10 weeks were divided into four groups: the female sham surgery group (n = 6) and the male sham surgery group (n = 6) who underwent sham surgery, the orchiectomized (OCX) group (n = 6), which underwent bilateral OCX at 10 weeks of age, the ovariectomy (OVX) group of mice (n = 6) who underwent bilateral OVX at 10 weeks of age. At 8 weeks postoperatively, all 23 mice were shut off. The serum cholesterol level is measured. Serum cholesterol levels had no effect 0.168, namely (p value> 0.05) in the castration rat group (OCX + OVX) compared to the sham surgery group with 67.08 ± 13.581 and 76.00 ± 16.346, respectively. Our findings indicate that orchiectomy and ovariectomy have no effect on cholesterol levels.

Abstract

Neutrophils are one of the most abundant cells of the immune system and are very active during the wound healing process. This study aimed to determine the description and comparison of neutrophil cells after treated sugar and honey in the incision wounds of domestic cats (F. domestica). 15 samples were used with treatment for 14 days and the preparations were given topically. The treatment group consisted of 5 groups, namely Negative control group (NCG) with normal wound healing (without treatment), Positive control group (PCG) given Bioplacenton ointment, treatment group 1 (TG1) used sugar, treatment group 2 (TG2) used honey, Group Treatment 3 (TG3) used combination of sugar and honey. Skin samples were taken on the 4th, 9th, and 14th day of each group to make histopathology preparations and observation under a microscope by assessing the number of neutrophil cells with an indicator score of 0 - 5. Treatment Group 1 (TG1 ) used sugar shown the best decrease in the number of neutrophil cells with the development of the same healing process like as Treatment Group 3 (TG3) used a combination of sugar and honey, while Treatment Group 2 (TG2) used honey shown also a decrease in the number of neutrophil cells. The three treatment groups showed a better healing process than Negative control group (NCG) without treatment and showed almost equivalent results to the Positive control Group (PCG) used Bioplacenton ointment. Abstract

Avian Influenza (AI) is an infectious disease caused by the influenza type A virus. The highly pathogenic AI (HPAI) H5N1 outbreak in Indonesia has occurred since 2003 until now. Education, biosecurity, vaccination, elimination, diagnostic, and surveillance are strategy to prevent and control AI virus (AIV) infection. Providing antiviral drug can be used as an alternative to control AIV in poultry, but it will be limited if resistance occurs. This study aims to determine the resistance to neuraminidase inhibitors (NAIs) (oseltamivir) and M2 ion channel inhibitors (amantadine) of HPAI H5N1 virus isolated from poultry in Sulawesi during 2017-2018. This research was conducted by whole-genome sequencing (WGS) with the next generation sequencing (NGS) (Illumina) technique on 5 poultry virus isolates. Molecular analysis was performed by multiple alignments and amino acid prediction using the MEGA X program. Antiviral resistance of oseltamivir and amantadine was assessed based on analysis of NA and M2 proteins compared to reference isolates from Sulawesi in NCBI. Based on the NA protein analysis, no mutations were found at positions 119, 275, 293, and 295, indicating that all the samples and reference isolates from Sulawesi are still sensitive to oseltamivir. Whereas at positions 26, 27, 30, 31, and 34 of M2 protein, there was a V27I mutation in Sulawesi reference isolate in 2016 and the combination of V27A and S31N mutations in 2 research isolates in 2018, which indicate possible resistance to amantadine. In conclusion, there is amantadine resistance of HPAI-H5N1 virus isolated from poultry in Sulawesi, 2018.

Abstract

Sterilization is an operation that can prevent reproduction and is useful as a treatment. Sterilization is done by removing the reproductive organs, in males it is called orchiectomy and in females it is called ovariohysterectomy which causes a decrease in the production of reproductive hormones. Previous studies have proven a physiologic relationship between reproductive hormones and vitamin D activation, but there is no information on the effect of sterilization on vitamin D levels. This study aimed to determine the effect of sterilization on vitamin D levels. This study was experimental with a Posttest-Only Control Group design. design. A total of 24 wistar rats consisting of 12 male rats and 12 female rats and each were divided into two groups, 6 female rats sterilized (ovariohysterectomy), 6 female rats non-sterilized, 6 male rats sterilized (orchiectomy) and 6 male rats non-sterilized. -sterilization. Wistar rats that were 10 weeks old were transferred to their respective cages and given regular feed to all groups of rats for 7 days as an adaptation process, after which sterilization was carried out in the sterilization group. After 6 weeks post-treatment, the rats were 17 weeks old and then blood was taken for examination of Vitamin D levels using the elisa method which was carried out at Hum-Rc Hasanuddin University Hospital. The results showed that the mean value of vitamin D levels in the ovariohysterectomy group was lower than in the non-sterilized group and was significant (Mann-Withney, p<0.05). The orchiectomy group was also lower than in the non-sterlized group and not significant (Independent T test, p> 0.05). It can be concluded that sterilization can reduce vitamin D levels in pets. Abstract

Sterilization is the recommended method of conception for animals. This method has also been used in many countries to control populations in dogs and cats. However, this action has some long-term effects as it affects the production of reproductive hormones in the body. This study aims to determine the effect of sterilization on the number of osteocytes. This study is an experimental study with a Posttest-Only Control Design, by observing rats that were fed standard feed until the age of 16 weeks and then terminated and measured the planned variables. A total of 24 rats aged 10 weeks were divided into 4 groups, namely 6 control females, 6 ovariohysterectomy females, 6 orchiectomy males, and 6 control males. 6 weeks after sterilization, all rats were euthanized and the left thigh bone was taken for histological examination of bone cells, namely osteocytic cells. The results of the analysis using the independent t-test, the results of the osteocyte cell test in females were p<0.05 which showed statistically that the sterilization action in female rats had a significant effect on the number of osteocyte cells, while in male rats, the value of p>0.05, which means statistically sterilization measures. had no significant effect on the number of osteocytes. Abstract

evansi is a blood parasite that is responsible for the occurrence of surra disease or also known as trypanosomiasis. The T. evansi cells are able to be damaged by the Allicin content of garlic. In the kidney itself, the parts that affect in the case of infection are namely tubules and glomerulus and can be identified through histopathology inspection by taking into account the level of damage. This research is aimed at studying the figure of mice kidney histopathology (M. musculus) that has been being infected by T. evansi and being distributed by garlic extract (A. sativum) with graded dose then compared to the distribution of commercial drug Tryponil. The samples used in this study were 30 mice with 6 treatment groups. P0 group was not infected by T. evansi, P1 group was infected by T. evansi without treatment, P2, P3, and P4 group respectively were infected by T. evansi and distributed garlic extract with 1,4 mg, 2,8 mg, and 5,6 doses respectively. In other hand, P5 group was distributed commercial drug namely Tryponil. The extraction method was through maserasi method. The distribution of the treatment was done in 3 days, euthanized and necropsied on mice in the purpose of organ harvesting for histology sampling with embedding method, blocking, and hematoxylin eosin coloring. The results showed that the closest to the distribution of commercial drug was the distribution of 5,6 mg dose (high dose), where both the treatments showed the result that the damage was not much, then followed by the distribution of 2,8 mg dose (fair dose) and 1,4 mg dose (light dose).

Abstract

In the world of veterinary medicine, maintaining the cleanliness of pets is one of the efforts to suppress the occurrence of zoonosis. One effort that can be done is by routinely grooming. Grooming is a hygiene treatment that includes bathing, cleaning ears, cutting nails, and combing hair. However, currently in Pangkep Regency, several problems have been found along with the increase in the number of pet lovers, one of which is the lack of knowledge of owners about the procedures for legitimate grooming. This factor then became the background for the creation of a workshop to empower pet lovers with grooming skills in Pangkep Regency. The purpose of this activity is to transfer knowledge by providing socialization and direct demonstrations regarding the procedures for legitimate grooming of pets to avoid integument diseases and conditions that can trigger the emergence of new diseases after improper grooming in Pangkep Regency. These legitimate grooming procedures can be adopted and utilized by the community, namely basic knowledge of grooming techniques that can be applied directly to pets at home. This will help owners to save on grooming costs for their pets. During the implementation of the activity, a demonstration of legal grooming was carried out on two cats, pocket books were distributed, and educational videos were shown on legal grooming technique guides. Participants who attended were 42 pet owners who were members of the Pangkep pet lovers group, where at the end of the activity session a questionnaire was filled out by the owners. Based on the results of the survey conducted, 39 were able to answer the questions from the questionnaire correctly, the rest were owners who did not follow the activity until the end due to other activities outside the location of this service. This is a reflection of the improvement in legal grooming skills in owners who previously only 8 out of 37 respondents understood the legal grooming aspect.
