Abstract

The objective of the experiment was to know the effect of vitamin C on gonadal development of giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) broodstock. Female broodstock of 30-60 g and male broodstock of 40-70 g average body weight were used in this experiment. The broodstock were fed with different dose of vitamin C in feed as 0; 0.05; 0.10; and 0.15% at 3-4% of biomass weight per day for 3 months. Gonado Somatic Index (GSI) value obtained from the diet with 0.15% of vitamin C was significantly different from others (P0.05). The supplementation of vitamin C in the diet of giant freshwater prawn broodstock is important for gonadal development.

Abstract

The research was conducted for six months from December 2003 to May 2004 to investigate the diet composition of chacunda gizzard shad, Anodontostoma chacunda. A total of 773 fishes were captured using gillnet with mesh sizes varying from 1.5 to 3 inches. The fish samples ranged 83–170 mm in length. For food habits analysis, the index of preponderance method was used. The dominant diets in stomach contents were Coscinodiscus, Pleurosigma and Rhizosolenia. There were no differences in diet composition between males and females among the sizes, and among the months. Based on index of electivity, the result showed that the fish preferred Coscinodiscus, Pleurosigma, Rhizosolenia, Gyrosigma, Melosira, Navicula, and Copepoda.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to know the reproductive biology of Ompok hypophthalmus included gonadal development stages and spawning season. The study was conducted from June to December 2006 in floodplain of Kampar Kiri River. Samplings were carried out monthly with purposive sampling method. Fish samples were cathed by gillnet, trapnet, hand line and long line. A total of 474 individuals were captured ranged 80-310 mm in total length and 2-143 g in weight. The female and male reached sexual maturity at 115 mm and 214 mm in total length respectively. The spawning season for this species ranges from June to December where a peak season found in October which examined based on variations in gonado somatic index (GSI) and the existence of mature male and females. The fecundity varied from 688-15180 eggs. The correlation coefficient between fecundity with total length and fecundity with weight were very weak. It lead to suggested that the coefficient cannot be used to predict O. hypophthalmus fecundity.

Abstract

The Pabean Bay is an estuary area that inhabited by many fish species such as javelin grunt (Pomadasys kaakan Cuvier, 1830). The purposes of this study were to identify food item and determine the feeding habit of the javelin grunt in The Pabean Bay, West Java. Fishes were collected monthly from June to December 2016 using gill nets and trap nets. Observation food is in vitro by conducting an examination of the stomach and the intestines of an example and refer on the books of the identification by Carpenter and Niem. Analysis of fish diet includes index of relative importance, niche breadth, and niche overlap. Fishes were grouped into three groups based on the size length. The result showed that the javelin grunt was crustacivore. Generally, the diet of javelin grunt consists of Acetes sp., Penaeus sp., Portunus sp., Clupeid, Ambassid, Sciaenid, Gobiid, Sillaginid, and unidentified organisms. Penaeus sp. was the main food and could be found on each size of group in monthly observation. The proportion of index of relative importance value was changed in regard of length size groups of A (41-85 mm: 12.105), B (86-130 mm: 13.804), and C (131-175 mm: 7.561). The niche breadth of javelin fish was higher in the larger ones and a high diet overlap among size groups was found. According to prey item and feeding habit, the javelin grunt can be classified as benthic crustacean feeder.

Abstract

The seagrass ecosystem of Pari Island, Kepulauan Seribu National Park, provides essential habitat for various fish resources, such as Sphaeramia orbicularis. Little information has been reported on the biology and ecology of this species in Indonesia. This study describes the growth pattern, feeding ecology, and reproductive biology of S. orbicularis in the seagrass beds of Pari Island. Fish samples were collected monthly from November 2023 to April 2024 using a beach seine net. A total of 542 fish were obtained with a range of 17-85 mm and weights of 0.16-24.28 g. Fish growth patterns were isometric and positive allometric with condition factor values >1. Based on feeding ecology, S. orbicularis is categorized as a specialist and has a low niche breadth (BA=0.2), with the primary diet being Gammaridae, Tanaidacea, and Brachyura. The fish population has a balanced sex ratio and spawns in January. This is indicated by the highest GMS mature gonad and GSI values found in that month. Egg fecundity ranged from 7,239-12,240 eggs with an average diameter of 0.0048-0.0052 mm, indicating a total spawner spawning pattern. The length of the first gonad maturity of male fish was 63.12 mm, while that of female fish was 65.27 mm.
