Abstract

The presence of fish cage culture activities may affects the environmentalcondition as the remain of fish feed pellets may enter the surrounding water and itmay serve as food resources for wild fish species such as Puntius schawanefeldi .To understand the impact of fish floating cage activities on feeding habit of P.schawanefeldi and economical condition of traditional fishermen in the KotoPanjang Dam, a study has been conducted on April to June 2013. Fish sampleswere collected from 5 stations, Stations 1, 2 and 3 were in the dam, around thecage, while station 4 and 5 were in the area that has no cage. Data of 24 hoursfish feeding habit were obtained by capturing fish for a 3 days period (once/ 3hours, at different time). Stomach content was then removed, identified andanalyzed using a volumetric method. Results shown that the stomach content offish living around the cage and the fish living far from the cage are different.Stomach content of the fish from the 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd stations was dominated byfish feed pellet remains (>90%), while that of the fish living in the area with nocage was dominated by debris (>90%). These facts indicate P. schawanefeldi is anopportunist fish, its feeding habit is changing. Fish living around the cage preferto feed on commercial fish feed pellet remains. The presence of P. schawanefeldiaround the cage, however, increase the income of traditional fishermen as theyable to caught around 50 – 80 kg of fish/ week, compare to 10 – 20 kg fish/ weekin the 4 th and 5 th stations. Data obtained indicate that the presence of fish cageaffect the feeding habit of P. schawanefeldi and positively affect the income of thetraditional fishermen. Keywords: Puntius schawanefeldi, feeding habit, fish floating cage, KotoPanjang Dam

Abstract

Kryptopterus apogon is one of the freshwater fishes that inhabit the Danau Baru oxbow lake. This study aimed to understand the stomach content of the fish living in the lake and also to understand its reproductive biology during the period of December-February 2017.The number of fish captured were 45 fishes ( 24 females and 21 males). The stomach content was analyzed using a gravimetry method, while its reproductive biology was noted.  K. apogon is as carnivorous fish and the types of food present in the stomach was fish (98.644%) as main food, crustaceans (0.940%) and insects (0.001%) as additional food. Mature fishes (13 females and 14 males) present throughout the research period, but the peak of reproductive activities occurred in February.  The Maturity Index of female ranged from 0.09-5.45% and that of the male was 0.07-0.18%. The fecundity of the fish was 36.075-540.72 eggs (in 340-690 mm TL and 197.5-1.725 gr BW females). This fish is total spawner,  and the diameter of eggs from the anterior, middle and posterior parts of the ovary was around 0.866 mm. These fish tend to consume fish during its gonad development.

Abstract

Abstract

Microplastics are currently a new source of pollutants and are considered the latest research in fresh waters compared to marine waters which have been studied for a long time. This study aims to determine the type and abundance of microplastics using bongo nets in the waters of the Koto Panjang reservoir. The research was conducted from April to June 2022 using a purposive sampling method. Water samples were extracted using 20% KOH and characteristic observations with an Olympus CX 21 binocular microscope. Statistical analysis was carried out using the one-way ANOVA test to determine the comparison of microplastic abundance at different locations. Identification results obtained 6 types of microplastics namely types of fiber, film, fragment, pellet, granule, and foam. The highest abundance was 103.111 particles/m3 in the fiber type, while the lowest abundance was 3.778 particles/m3 in the granule type.
