Abstract

The potential for carbon emission reductions from palm oil plantation and mill activities at PT Perkebunan Nusantara IV Region III represents a critical contribution to Indonesia's national commitment to achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060. Operational activities—including fuel combustion in heavy machinery, generator utilization, fertilization, electricity consumption, and liquid waste treatment through Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) contribute significantly to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), and nitrous oxide (N₂O). This study employs a quantitative approach grounded in SNI ISO 14064-1:2018, systematically calculating emissions under Scope 1, Scope 2, and partial Scope 3 categories across three operational units: Lubuk Dalam, Terantam, and Sei Pagar. The findings reveal that mobile combustion constitutes the largest emission source, followed by stationary combustion, fertilization activities, and fugitive emissions derived from POME processing. Among the three units examined, the Terantam unit generates the highest total emissions. Further analysis demonstrates that the utilization of biogas (CH₄) recovered from POME holds substantial energy generation potential, capable of producing 950,174 kWh at Lubuk Dalam, 1,929,734 kWh at Terantam, and 880,749 kWh at Sei Pagar, with an aggregate economic value exceeding Rp 4 billion annually. Based on these findings, three principal mitigation strategies were formulated: substituting diesel-powered generators with grid electricity supplied by PLN, transitioning heavy equipment to electric-based technology, and optimizing biogas utilization for electricity generation. These strategies demonstrate significant potential not only in reducing CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e) emissions but also in enhancing energy efficiency and advancing the long-term operational sustainability of the company

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the existing conditions of solid medical waste management, identify internal and external factors influencing medical waste management, and formulate a solid medical waste management strategy in health care facilities (fasyankes) within the working area of the Balai Jaya Community Health Center (Puskesmas), Rokan Hilir Regency. The research employed a descriptive approach using SWOT analysis. Data were obtained through observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies conducted at various types of health care facilities within the working area of the Balai Jaya Community Health Center. The analysis was performed using the IFAS and EFAS matrices to determine the strategic position of solid medical waste management. The results indicate that solid medical waste management in the Balai Jaya Community Health Center’s working area is not yet optimal. The improper mixing of medical and nonmedical waste is still observed, waste containers do not fully comply with established standards, Temporary Storage Facilities (Tempat Penyimpanan Sementara [TPS]) for hazardous and toxic waste (Bahan Berbahaya dan Beracun [B3]) do not meet requirements in some health care facilities, dedicated waste management personnel are unavailable, and regular training on medical waste management has not been implemented. Furthermore, most health care facilities do not routinely weigh and record waste generation, resulting in inadequate documentation of waste management practices. Internal factor analysis indicates that the primary strengths include health care workers’ knowledge of medical and hazardous waste management, the use of personal protective equipment, and their awareness of occupational health and safety.

Abstract

This research was conducted on one of the Siak River tributaries that crosses the urban area in Pekanbaru, namely the Pengambang River. The Pengambang River flow is dammed to become a reservoir; one of its functions is as a source of raw drinking water. Increased activity along rivers and reservoirs certainly has an impact on water quality. The research was carried out in May-October 2023. Water sampling was taken at 3 points each along the river flow and in the Reservoir. The physicochemical water quality parameters measured include temperature, TSS, BOD, COD, DO, pH, TP, Nitrate, and Total coliforms for rivers and reservoirs, while Chorofil-a only for reservoirs. Water quality was evaluated using CCME-WQI, and the results of water quality evaluation according to CCME-WQI in the Pengambang River at all sampling stations could have been bad to marginal. At the same time, in the Reservoir, it was marginal. The CCME_WQI Index value in rivers ranges 42.33 to 54.97, while in reservoirs, it is higher 49-56, it indicated water quality in reservoir better than river. Parameters influencing water quality in rivers and reservoirs, especially TC and BOD come from household waste cage fish cultivation.

Abstract

The quality of the Siak River is gradually deteriorating with the rapid socio-economic development in its tributary watersheds. S. Sibam and Air Hitam are part of the Siak tributaries in the Siak tributary sub-region in Pekanbaru City. The quality of the Sibam and Air Hitam tributaries in the Siak Watershed of Pekanbaru City has been studied to determine the relative pollution level of water quality standards. Water quality measurements were carried out from January to August 2022 at the upstream, middle, and confluence with the Siak River. The pollution level of the Sibam River and Air Hitam River was measured using the pollution index method. The quality of the Sibam River and Air Hitam waters is compared to the quality standards according to The Regulation of Government of the Republicof Indonesia(RGRI) Number 22/2021 Class III. The water quality parameter measured consisted of dissolved oxygen, TSS, pH, BOD, COD, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, and total phosphate. Pollution index calculations for the Sibam and Air Hitam rivers show light pollution, with index values ranging from 1.75 to 3.57. Nitrite and ammonia concentrations in the Sibam River do not meet quality standards. Whereas in the Air Hitam River, the BOD, nitrite, and ammonia level exceeds the quality standards (RGRI Number 22/2021 Class III). The highest pollution index is in the middle of the river, with settlements on both rivers. Keywords:Pollution IndexWater QualitySibam RiverAir Hitam River

Abstract

Koto Panjang Reservoir is used as a fish farming site using the Floating Net Cage (KJA) system. The development of KJA in Koto Panjang Reservoir provides economic benefits for the community but also has the potential to cause a decline in water quality. This study aims to analyze the concentration of chlorophyll-a around the reservoir where KJA is located. The survey method was used for observations at 4 stations with 3 replications. The characteristics of the four stations were based on variations in the number of KJA plots: station 1 (60 plots), station 2 (no KJA), station 3 (350 plots), and station 4 (600 plots). Sampling was carried out in the morning from 08.00 to 12.00 WIB. Chlorophyll-a was analyzed using the spectrophotometric method. The concentration of chlorophyll-a in the waters of Koto Panjang Reservoir ranged from 7,693 to 12,927 µg/L, classified as mesotrophic. The highest value was detected at station 4 (12,927 μg/L) and the lowest at station 2 (7,693 μg/L). There was a tendency to increase chlorophyll-A concentrations in line with the increasing number of KJA plots. Water quality in the Koto Panjang Reservoir, based on pH, temperature, clarity, dissolved oxygen, free carbon dioxide, and chlorophyll-a, still supports the life of organisms.

Abstract

The Mundam Jaya Joint Business Group (KUB) in Mundam Village, Medang Kampai District, Dumai City, participated in a community service program introducing the cultivation of Azolla sp. as a local feed source to improve the efficiency of Nile tilapia farming. The program aimed to reduce production costs, enhance productivity, and strengthen food security and the local coastal economy. The methods implemented included training, field practice, mentoring, and continuous monitoring and evaluation using a learning by doing approach. The results demonstrated that group members were able to master Azolla cultivation techniques, from propagation to its application as supplementary feed for tilapia. The use of Azolla reduced dependence on commercial feed, lowered feed costs by up to 45%, and improved tilapia growth and survival rates, with survival exceeding 85%. Beyond technical outcomes, the program also enhanced participants’ business management skills, particularly in production record-keeping and marketing strategies. Overall, this initiative proved that the utilization of natural resources such as Azolla as fish feed can serve as a sustainable innovation in aquaculture. It not only supports the development of the village aquaculture sector but also contributes to economic independence and food security for coastal communities.

Abstract

Abstract

Taman Wisata Alam (TWA) Sungai Dumai is a 4,712.50 ha nature tourism park in Dumai City, Riau Province, that faces encroachment and recurrent fire pressure while only about 2% of its area is actively used for tourism. This study assessed the ecological, social, and economic condition of TWA Sungai Dumai, calculated its environmental carrying capacity for ecotourism, and formulated a management strategy through SWOT analysis. A descriptive mixed-methods approach was applied from August 2025 to July 2026, combining vegetation plot sampling (9 plots across three clusters) with a stratified random sample of 150 respondents from five kelurahan surrounding the park. Carrying capacity was calculated using the Cifuentes (1992) PCC-RCC-ECC framework, while internal and external factors were evaluated through IFAS-EFAS matrices. Results show tree-level Shannon diversity index ranging from 0.673 to 2.594, indicating moderate-to-high biodiversity that declines toward encroached zones. Physical, real, and effective carrying capacities were 1,072, 111, and 22 visitors/day respectively, while actual general-tourism visitation of only 0.4 visitors/day (about 4.5% of ECC) revealed extreme underutilization rather than overtourism. IFAS and EFAS scores of 2.293 and 2.689 positioned the park in Quadrant I (SO/aggressive strategy), from which fifteen strategies were formulated and prioritized into twelve programs across three implementation phases (2026-2030), beginning with institutional coordination, integrated management planning, tenurial conflict resolution, and community group empowerment. These findings provide an empirically grounded basis for strengthening the existing 2020-2029 long-term management plan of TWA Sungai Dumai toward sustainable, community-based ecotourism.
