Abstract

High-technology firms such as Boeing strategically managed their operations to sustain dominance within a competitive global oligopolistic market. The emergence of Airbus in 1970 gradually weakened Boeing’s long-standing dominance, which had been perceived as monopolistic since 1917. Both companies operate in the aerospace and civil aviation industry and dominated the global market, competing most intensely in the narrowbody commercial aircraft segment. Against this backdrop, this study examined Boeing’s strategic responses to trade competition, focusing on the rivalry between the B737 MAX and Airbus’s A320neo in the global civil aviation market. This study adopted a qualitative case study approach and applied Michael Porter’s Competitive Advantage theory, particularly the differentiation-based generic strategy. The analysis was structured into three phases: differentiation as a competitive response, the risk of being stuck in the middle, and re-differentiation. Data were collected from secondary sources, including official reports from Boeing and Airbus, statements issued by Boeing’s management, and publications from regulatory and international institutions such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), International Civil Aviation Organization (IATA), and World Trade Organization (WTO). The findings revealed a substantial decline in Boeing’s competitive advantage following the crashes of Lion Air Flight 610 (2018) and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 (2019), both involving the B737 MAX. Boeing responded by pursuing a differentiation strategy through technological upgrades and quality improvements to the B737 MAX, including MCAS modifications and the installation of dual AOA sensors; enhanced regulatory compliance through the re-certification of the B737 MAX 7 to MAX 10 variants; reputation recovery via the Strengthening Safety and Quality Plan; and supply chain recovery by shifting from mass production to phased production, with output increasing from 38 to 42 aircraft by October 2025. Abstract

This study examines Thailand’s gastrodiplomacy strategy through the Kitchen of the World program in the United States during the 2021–2023 period. Gastrodiplomacy is a form of public diplomacy that utilizes cuisine as an instrument of soft power to build national image and expand cultural influence. This research employs a qualitative approach using library research methods by analyzing academic books, scholarly journals, official government documents of Thailand, and relevant online sources. The analytical framework is based on soft power theory, the concept of gastrodiplomacy, and nation branding. The findings indicate that Thailand has systematically implemented gastrodiplomacy through several integrated strategies, including culinary campaigns via the Thai SELECT certification, the organization of food-related events, product marketing strategies, coalition-building with the Thai diaspora and private sector, and extensive use of media for cultural promotion. The United States was selected as a strategic target due to its multicultural society and high demand for ethnic cuisine. The implementation of the Kitchen of the World program has contributed to enhancing Thailand’s positive national image, expanding the global network of Thai restaurants, and increasing the export of Thai food products to the United States. This study concludes that gastrodiplomacy through the Kitchen of the World program serves as an effective soft power instrument in advancing Thailand’s national interests and strengthening bilateral relations between Thailand and the United States. Abstract

Multinational companies in the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector are a major contributor to plastic waste due to their high production and consumption. Meanwhile, the world is responding to environmental issues by encouraging the implementation of sustainability principles through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework, particularly point 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production, which emphasizes responsible resource and waste management. Unilever, one of the FMCG companies, is addressing this issue through its internal Zero Waste to Landfill policy and several waste management programs. This study aims to analyze the implementation of this policy in Indonesia and assess its effectiveness from a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) perspective using a Green Thought approach. This study used a descriptive qualitative method with primary data in the form of interviews with Unilever Indonesia's Head of Sustainable Environment and 12 product users, as well as secondary data from reputable international and national scientific journals, sustainability reports, and news media. The research focused on the period 2018–2025. The research results show that policy implementation through the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan (USLP), Care for Area Surrounding (CFAS), and The Unilever Compass programs is the most effective. However, their effectiveness is still limited, at only 17%, due to the high volume of plastic waste, limited program reach, and low public awareness. These findings indicate a gap between company policies and public participation. The implications of the research indicate the need for increased packaging innovation and broader program socialization. Thus, existing policies are not yet fully optimal in addressing waste problems comprehensively.
