Abstract

This study aims to analyze the structure and meaning of the main poles in traditional houses of the community in Kampung Karekamangeda, Sumba Barat Daya Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province. The analysis focuses on the selection of pole materials, types and positions of the main poles and supporting posts, as well as their symbolic and functional significance in the context of Sumbanese traditional architecture. Based on literature review and field observations, Sumbanese traditional houses are generally supported by four primary poles symbolizing the family entities (father-mother-son-daughter) along with several other supporting posts that sustain the wall and roof. The use of selected hard wood and the stilt house structure are also characteristic features. The analysis indicates that the main poles not only bear the structural load of the towering roof (the “tower” form) but also serve as cosmological and social status symbols among the Sumba community. Further, the study found that the selection of material, layout and maintenance of the main poles are influenced by living customary beliefs, such as the kinship system and the Marapu belief system.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the mathematical elements embedded in traditional woven mats (tikaradat) from Loura District, Southwest Sumba Regency. These mats, known as nopo or pandan mats, represent an important part of Sumbanese cultural heritage with deep social and aesthetic significance. Using an ethnomathematical approach, this research identifies mathematical concepts present in the form, pattern, and production process of traditional mats. Data were obtained through literature review, observation of local crafts, and hypothetical analysis based on geometric characteristics of mat weaving. The findings reveal the presence of geometry, repetition patterns, symmetry, proportion, and geometric transformations within the structure and motifs of traditional mats. These results indicate that Sumbanese traditional mats can serve as contextual mathematics learning media linking cultural knowledge with formal mathematical concepts

Abstract

This study aims to identify and describe the ethnomathematical elements found in the bedug, a traditional musical instrument used by the community in Loura Subdistrict, Southwest Sumba Regency. The bedug not only functions as a musical instrument, but also has historical, philosophical, and visual value that reflects the cultural practices of the local community. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive ethnographic research type. Data were collected through direct observation, interviews with traditional leaders and local communities, and documentation of the shape and structure of the bedug. The results show that the bedug contains various mathematical concepts, particularly the concept of spatial geometry, such as circles and cylinders, which are evident in the shape of the base and body of the bedug. These findings indicate that the Sumba community has intuitively applied mathematical principles in cultural practices and the creation of traditional artefacts. This study contributes to the development of ethnomathematics-based mathematics learning by integrating local wisdom, thereby making learning more contextual, relevant, and meaningful for students.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the importance of utilising local culture as a context for mathematics learning through an ethnomathematics approach. One cultural artefact that is still used by the people of East Nusa Tenggara is the padalu, or traditional water jar. This study aims to identify and analyse the mathematical elements contained in the padalu as a potential source of contextual mathematics learning. The research method used was descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques in the form of direct observation of the shape of the padalu, measurement of its parts, and visual documentation. Data analysis was carried out by linking the results of observations and measurements with relevant mathematical concepts. The results showed that the padalu represents a combination of a cylindrical shape and a hemisphere. It contains geometric and measurement concepts, such as radius, diameter, height, surface area, volume, symmetry, and size comparison. These findings indicate that padalu has strong potential to be used as a medium for contextual and meaningful local culture-based mathematics learning. Thus, the integration of padalu in mathematics learning can help students understand abstract concepts through real experiences that are close to their daily lives.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the role of teachers in shaping the discipline and manners of fourth-grade students at Kandelu Kutura State Primary School, as well as to identify the characteristics of students and the factors that hinder their development. The study uses a qualitative approach with observation, interviews, and documentation methods. The research subjects consisted of 20 fourth-grade students and one homeroom teacher. The research was conducted at Kandelu Kutura State Elementary School, West Wewewa District, on 6–8 August 2025. Data were collected through observation of learning activities, in-depth interviews with teachers, and supporting documentation, then analysed using qualitative descriptive analysis. The results showed that the role of teachers in shaping discipline and manners was carried out through setting an example, habit formation, enforcement of rules, and giving advice. However, the students' discipline and manners have not developed optimally, as evidenced by tardiness, late submission of assignments, lack of neatness in dress, and low use of polite language and mutual respect. The main inhibiting factors include students' habits outside of school, lack of parental supervision, and consistency in enforcing rules
