Abstract

Abstract. Illegal gold mining has disturbed the operation of a mining company (Indo Muro Kencana) in Central Kalimantan since the early 1990s. Several disputes have happened, including two serious conflicts, causing financial losses, damage to facilities, and fatalities, forcing the company to stop operations in 2002 and 2013. Eventually, the original investors abandoned the site. Various countermeasures were taken, including harsh law enforcement involving police and military forces’ deployment, yet the illegal mining activities continued. Since 2015, the new management has implemented new approaches; within five years, the number of illegal miners has decreased considerably. This study aims to identify the reasons behind the disputes and how the new management reduces illegal mining within its concession without triggering further conflict. This research is a case study using in-depth interviews, complemented by a study of corporate and media documents. Five factors were identified behind the previous conflicts. The new management’s integrated strategy to manage social issues, including illegal mining, started with social mapping, then an integrated team to deal with social issues was established, and finally, an integrated plan was introduced with four agendas: engagement, presence, respect and inclusiveness, and cohesiveness. This study contributes to company-community model building in similar circumstances and, in practice, offers a solution to curtail illegal gold mining, particularly in Indonesia. Keywords: Conflict, illegal gold mining, illegal miners, integrated, Kalimantan.

Abstract

The Covid-19 Pandemic has shifted the behaviour of decision-makers in all business processes. This situation has accelerated the process of digitizing all information, information technology, and business processes. As a subsidiary of an Oil and Gas State-Owned Enterprise in Indonesia, The SHU also has a similar SOE's bureaucracy for the approval process in business development. What factors were considered, and how did the interaction and interrelation within those factors influence the decision-making is the main question in this research. This research aims at developing the decision-making system by accommodating the decision-maker's needs and preferences. Action research based on soft systems methodology (SSM) is used to model the new decision-making system and compare results. The long decision-making stages of business development investment have delayed several important business development projects, leading to missed early production opportunities and increased capital investment. Financial decision documents have to be wet-signed by all stakeholders involved in the decision -making process. It is practically difficult to follow existing business processes for business development approval during the Pandemic. The Covid-19 Pandemic is an entry point for redefining existing decision-making systems. The results showed that the principle of prudence and compliance are the main factors influencing decision-making. The development of digital review and approval based on a decision-making system conceptual model accommodated the interests of all stakeholders, and business processes continued during the Pandemic

Abstract

Illegal gold mining is a controversial activity. It provides livelihoods for rural communities in gold-rich areas and contributes to poverty alleviation; however, it also creates environmental devastation, losses to state revenue and often triggers social conflicts. Various eradication efforts have been made, ranging from persuasive approaches to harsh law enforcement involving the military and police, yet this illegal activity continues. This qualitative study aims to find and propose workable solutions to eradicate this activity, particularly in Indonesia. The study was conducted at two illegal- mining sites in Kalimantan, involving some 6,000 illegal-gold-miners. Data were collected through field observations and in-depth interviews with primary stakeholders, including authorities, perpetrators, and the community. The study identified eight sets of solutions to be implemented with an integrative approach, covering alternative livelihoods, cooperation and assistance, education and training, information dissemination, formalization, multi-sectoral collaboration, regulatory changes, and law enforcement. This paper contributes to model development in similar social circumstances and, in practice, provides workable solutions to illegal-gold-mining in other sites, particularly in Indonesia

Abstract

A market report says that the projectors’ business is growing promisingly over the next five years, globally. Asia Pacific market is a region that shows an increasing sales trend. In Indonesia, PT. ViewTron (the name is made vague due to confidentiality), an importing projectors company established in 2018, is growing significantly. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the sales volume dropped drastically. The management is concerned about the future business of the company in Indonesia and what best strategies to deal with such future uncertainties. The scenario planning approach is selected to address the management’s concerns. A qualitative research methodology is used to analyze the situations that affect the company. A 2x2 matrix of scenario framework is developed reflecting critical uncertainties that might affect future business of PT ViewTron. The scenario shows the plausibility of future situations and offers strategy options for the company to manage the implications of each scenario. Before the occurrence of a scenario, the management should define early warning signals to alert the company on which scenario it is heading toward and what actions to take. By setting thorough scenario planning, the management could develop strategies that may envision future business uncertainties confidently.

Abstract

Abstract

In the last few decades, road pricing scheme have been known to hold a central role in actualizing sustainable and integrated transport systems. Road pricing has been implemented in various forms and price structures in many cities in the world. Although the road pricing and price structures were generally designed based on the rational actor approach, some studies provided evidences that, in reality, drivers have bounded rationality. It can be argued that limited cognitive ability of drivers gave significant effect towards their decision. In developing countries like Indonesia, road pricing seems to be an alternative solution for traffic congestion problems. This research aims to explore the cognitive responses of drivers, particularly on their ways of making decision and learning, to complexity and variability of road pricing, and also to give valuable contribution to the government on making policy towards traffic issues. The initial results indicate that policy makers in Indonesia need to consider how drivers behave in response to road pricing scheme before implementing any road pricing policy. Moreover, multiple factors from the point of view of drivers (travel time, safety, comfort, etc.) should be taken into consideration as integral parts of the road pricing scheme design. Abstract

Indonesia has a high rate of illegal prescription medicine sales through unauthorized distribution facilities, and these violations have increased in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the fact that law enforcement has been conducted, it has continued to grow. Between 2018 and 2020, criminal cases related to this issue handled by the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) increased by 5.54 percent, and in the province of West Sumatra, which was the main focus of this study, cases of prescription medicine violations reached 68.35 percent in 2020. However, preventing and eradicating these cases has become increasingly difficult due to the interconnectedness of factors and actors. To address the issue, the system thinking approach was chosen as the best method for modeling the dynamic behavior of this complex system over time. To facilitate applicable solutions to resolve these violations that occur in West Sumatra Province, a tool known as a rich picture diagram (RPD) is proposed as a precursor to the development of a causal loop diagram (CLD). The study's system thinking approach enables the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority's business processes to fully comprehend the dynamics and develop robust systemic interventions during the supervision and investigation of such violations.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed many things in people's lives, including people's behavior in shopping. Previous findings that showed an increase in a transaction in the online market during the pandemic indicated a change in consumer behavior shifting to online shopping. One of them is in the product category of health products. This study seeks to see these effects and to find things that are of concern to the public when shopping for health products online by exploring several aspects: 1) Consumer's insight on online shopping for health products, 2) Perception on pandemic effect on shopping frequency, 3) Behavior of online shopping for health products, and 4) Perception on online shopping for health products experience. The methodology was quantitative, data collection was carried out by survey and descriptive data processing. Findings of this study show there has been an increase in online shopping for health products during the pandemic, especially for supplement/ vitamin products. The shopping behavior found to have been good indicates that Indonesian FDA public education to the community runs well, while on other hand still faces several concerns. Most agreed that the COVID-19 pandemic made online shopping more frequent than before.
