Abstract

Purpose: Nitrosamines, chemical compounds formed from nitrites and amines, are gaining attention due to potential health risks. They are found in processed foods, such as cured meats, smoked fish, and fermented products, prompting a thorough examination of their sources and impact on health. This study aims to explore the nitrosamine content in food and its potential public health implications. Methods: This study employs a descriptive literature review methodology to investigate the impact of nitrosamine content in food on human health. It searches peer-reviewed journals, books, and online databases to identify relevant studies on food risk processing that contain nitrosamines and their impact on public health. Results: The review includes studies published over the past 20 years, focusing on nitrosamine content, nitrosamine formation processes, and health implications. Data from selected studies is systematically extracted and analyzed, focusing on patterns, risk factors, and health impacts, particularly in terms of cancer risk. Conclusion: This review found they pose significant public health risks, especially in meat products. Studies show a strong link between nitrosamine intake and increased risk of gastric and esophageal cancers. The detection and mitigation of nitrosamines are crucial, with more stringent regulations and improved testing techniques being needed in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract

Background: Diarrhea remains a prominent factor contributing to the high rate of child mortality, particularly observed in children under the age of five. This study assessed the relationship between sanitation coverage and diarrhea outcomes among children under five in Matabeleland, South Province of Zimbabwe. Methods: The study utilized a quantitative cross-sectional study using a Demographic Health Survey and assesses from the 2019 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS). This data is freely available at https://mics.unicef.org/surveys. A total of 518 mothers were analyzed in this research based on the secondary data from the 2019 MICS findings. The variables studied were the mother's education, wealth, handwashing, sanitation coverage, shared sanitation facilities, child age, residence, and religion. Results: The analysis revealed significant associations for both the age of the child and residence in Matabeleland, South Province; for age, the p-value was 0.039 with an OR of 0.594 and a 95% Confidence Interval (0.362-0.974), and residence with a p-value of 0.004 and OR of a 95% CI (1.329-4.484). Conclusion: sanitation coverage was not significant in this study. Therefore, health and hygiene education campaigns should be conducted to equip caregivers with adequate knowledge that is essential for the prevention of diarrhea.

Abstract

Sub-Saharan Africa’s (SSA) children experience a disproportionate burden of environmental health risks, contributing to over half of global under-five deaths despite representing only 27% of live births 1. This scoping review synthesised evidence from sixty-seven (67) eligible studies (2010–2025) to map out environmental exposures affecting children (0–18 years) in Sub-Saharan Africa, and to identify gaps in global interventions. Included studies focused on children (0-18 years) in SSA, addressed one or more of the four predefined environmental exposure domains (air pollution, WASH, toxic chemicals, climate-related risks), and reported on child health outcomes or interventions. Guided by the PRISMA and Arksey and O’Malley frameworks, peer-reviewed articles and organisational reports were identified from WHO, UNICEF, PubMed, and Google Scholar, and scrutinised for exposure-outcome links, study design, and intervention coverage. Evidence was synthesised across four major domains: air pollution, WASH, toxic chemical exposures, and climate-related risks. The results show that household air pollution, unsafe water and sanitation, lead and e-waste contamination, and climate variability consistently contribute to elevated morbidity and mortality among children, particularly those under five years, where most primary data were reported. Despite progress in WASH and emergency response, major gaps persist in air quality monitoring, toxin surveillance, and climate-health integration. Protecting child health in SSA necessitates strengthened multisectoral action across health, environment, WASH, energy, and social protection sectors to enhance monitoring, mitigation, and adaptive responses, ensuring every child’s right to a safe and clean environment. Keywords: Sub-Saharan African children, environmental health risks, pollution, WASH, and climate change

Abstract

Abstract

Irritant contact dermatitis is a common condition among farmers, but its underlying causes remain poorly understood. This study aimed to identify factors associated with irritant contact dermatitis among horticulture farmers in Semarang District, Indonesia. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 427 farmers using a validated, reliable structured questionnaire. The results indicated complaints of dermatitis related to contact with irritants. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test and logistic regression. Analysis revealed that sex, personal hygiene habits, education level, and the number of pesticide types used were significantly associated with irritant contact dermatitis. Female farmers were less likely to develop irritant contact dermatitis. Conversely, farmers with poor personal hygiene habits or lower levels of education were more likely to develop the condition. Farmers who used fewer types of pesticides had a lower risk of irritant contact dermatitis than those who used a greater variety. In conclusion, irritant contact dermatitis among farmers is influenced by both work-related exposures and hygiene practices. Improving personal hygiene habits and limiting the use of multiple pesticide types may help prevent irritant contact dermatitis under typical farming conditions.
