Abstract

This study that so far has not been conducted yet by others, regarding the effect of a local AMF species from Southeast Sulawesi on the growth of Albizzia saponaria (Lour.) Miq. The effect of AMF to the plant growth depends on the compatibility between host plant and fungi species which was controlled by genotypes of the both symbionts. The aim of this research is to know the growth respons and dependency of A. saponaria to this local AMF grown in post-nickel mining soil. This research was conducted in the Screen House of Forestry Department, Faculty of Agriculture-Haluoleo University since June to September 2010. A completely randomized design with three replications was used. The treatments were no inoculation of AMF (A), inoculated with -1 -1AMF Mycofer inoculum 5 g polybag (B), and inoculated with local AMF inoculum 10 g polybag (C). The seedling parameter observed were height, diameter, number of leaf, total biomass, number of nodule, percentage of root colonization and relative -1 mycorrhizal dependency (RMD). Results showed the increasing growth and biomass with the application of AMF 10 g polybag (C). There was a positive-strongest correlation value (P<0.01) between percentage of root colonization to all of seedling growth parameters, except to the diameter which was only strong correlated (P<0.05). A. saponaria seedling has high dependency level on local AMF for their survival in heavy metal contaminant soil.

Abstract

Lonkida (Nauclea orientalis L.) is a native multipurpose tropical tree species in Indonesia, which a few information regarding its biology and ecology. An experimental research was carried out to examine characters of fruit, seed and seed quality of lonkida growing at different habitat in South East Sulawesi. Fruit and seed was collected from four habitat types, such as dry land, permanent swamp, temporary swamp and temporary swamp savanna. The parameters to be observed were fruit size, seed size and morpho-physiology seed quality. The results showed that fruit size and number of seed per fruit are significantly different among habitats. The mean of fruit’s length and width and number of seed per fruit originated from permanent swamp and temporary swamp is greater than that of fruit’s from lonkida stand growing in the remain habitat’s. Those parameters ranging from 4.99±0.17 to 6.66±0.19 cm for fruit length and 3812±519 to 13.984±1912 seed for number of seed per fruit. Beside, the habitat condition also significantly affected to the characters of seed dimension and seed quality. Permanent swamp was a habitat with seed size and seed weight lower compare to another habitats. However, seeds produced by the lonkida stand growing on permanent swamp habitat and temporary swamp savanna has the higher percent of germination, germination capacity and mean day germination (MDG) than that of the seeds from lonkida stand growing on other habitats. Seed length is positively correlated with seed width and negative correlation with means germination time.

Abstract

Bitti (Vitex cofassus Reinw.) is a native plant species in Sulawesi which belongs to Verbenaceae family. This species has great potential to be developed as a house construction material, boat base material, and household utensils. Development of bitti silviculture techniques is very necessary in supporting the efforts to develop these plants. One of problems in this cultivation is disease attack. This study aimed to determine symptoms of disease attack, level of severity, determine kind of pathogen that cause disease, and analyze some factors that cause pathogen attack on bitti seedlings. The results showed that leaf spot disease was found on bitti seedlings with level of severity 33.22%. The identification results showed that the pathogen causing leaf spot disease is the fungus, namely Curvularia sp. Microclimate conditions such as temperature and humidity assumed to affect the emergence of pathogen on bitti seedlings. The attack of Curvularia sp tends to affect the growth of bitti seedlings.

Abstract

Pooti (Hopea gregaria Slooten) is a tree species of the Dipterocarpaceae. It is an endemic tree in Southeast Sulawesi and its existence is endangered. Flowering and fruiting periods of pooti is certainly unknown and do not produce fruits regularry which causes problem in generative propagation. One of the factors that influence the success of shoot cuttings is the presence of growth regulating substance, including the use of Rootone-F. The purpose of this study was to obtain the right dosage of growth regulators for the successful growth of pooti shoot cuttings. Design of the research was completely randomized design consisting of 8 concentrations of Rootone-F, i.e.  (a) 0 ppm, (b) 50 ppm, (c) 75 ppm, (d) 100 ppm, (e) 125 ppm (f) 150 ppm, (g) 175 ppm and (h) 200 ppm. The result showed that Rootone-F treatment had not significant effect on all observed variables except for the number of secondary roots. Application of 200 ppm Rootone-F had significantly increased in secondary roots number of pooti shoot cuttings. Pooti plants are easily propagated by shoot cuttings without any treatment of Rootone-F.

Abstract

Gold mine tailing soil media is characterized by low soil fertility and heavy metals toxicity. As an effort to improve the condition of gold mine tailing soil media, a revegetation experiment using Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) and soil media from gold mine tailing was conducted in the greenhouse. The objectives were to assess initial growth, P uptake and Pb reduction in Nauclea orientalis L. plants inoculated with indigenous AMF grown on gold mine tailing soil media. Three AMF fungi were used in this study, i.e. Glomus aggregatum, Glomus sp. and Acaulospora delicata. The experiment was conducted in Completely Randomized Design, having four treatments, i.e. control, G. aggregatum, Glomus sp. and A. delicata. The experiment was carried out for 3 months in a greenhouse scale. The results showed that local AMF inoculation significantly increased the height and stem diameter of lonkida by 181-213% and 284-443%, respectively, compared to control. The highest measurements of leaf’s length and width of lonkida seedlings were obtained from Glomus sp. and A. delicata treatments. Glomus sp. and A. delicata each significantly increased P levels in roots and shoots. Inoculation with G. aggregatum reduced Pb in the root and shoots parts by 74-86% and 72-76%, respectively, compared to controls. Local AMFs are potential to be developed as biological fertilizers to support revegetation in degraded lands, such as in gold mine tailing areas.

Abstract

Understanding the composition and diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) is imperative for potentially enhancing their ecological role in different terrestrial ecosystems. Land use can have substantial effects on AMF species composition and diversity, but such effects have been explored less in tropical landscapes. In this study, we assessed the effects of disturbances on AMF species richness, observed the potential development of AMF types to produce mycorrhizal biofertilizer bioinoculants.  This study was conducted identifying and selecting AMFs was for the purpose of managing post-mining land in Bombana District, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia.  AMF spores collected from the field and trap culture were directly isolated and morphologically identified. A total of 15 AMF species were identified, including 11 species from field samples and 9 species from trap cultures. We noted that five AMF species were unique to field conditions and 5 AMF species were uniquely isolated from trap culture.  It appears that Glomeraceae family contributed the highest number of species in all land-use types.  Glomus sp. 1 was the most frequent species found in all land-use types. The Simpson’s index, Shannon index and evenness ranged from 1.60 ± 0.51 to 2.40 ± 0.40; 0.41 ± 0.17 to 0.62 ± 0.17; 0.25 ± 0.10 to 0.39 ± 0.11, respectively. In this study, we found three new records of AMF species including Entrophospora colombiana, Sclerocystis microcarpa and Glomus coronatum for Indonesia, i.e. from this study, it is clear that different land-use types affected AMF spore composition and species diversity.  All AMF species found in this study were then applied to the land to improve land quality.
