Abstract

This quantitative study investigated the impact of ChatGPT-assisted free writing on idea development in letter writing among seven 11th-grade students at SMA NAM IBS over six weeks. Using a single-group pre-test-post-test design, five assessments were conducted: a pre-test, three ChatGPT-assisted exercises, and a post-test. Descriptive statistics showed an increase in mean scores from pre-test (M = 78.43) to post-test (M = 86.00), indicating improvement. However, repeated measures ANOVA showed no significant difference (F(4, 24) = 1.43, p 0.05). This may have been due to small sample size, non-normal data, sphericity violations, and high within-subject variability. Despite the lack of statistical significance, the upward trend suggested potential benefits of ChatGPT. Further research with larger samples, improved rubrics, and adjusted statistical methods was suggested to validate ChatGPT’s effectiveness in enhancing idea development. Keywords: ChatGPT, Free Writing, Idea Development, Letter Writing

Abstract

This study examines thematic progression patterns in English economic articles on Batamnews.com, focusing on how themes and rhemes are organized to ensure textual coherence and effectively convey economic information. Employing Halliday and Hasan’s functional approach, themes are categorized into topical, interpersonal, and textual types. The research adopts a qualitative method, analyzing the introduction sections of seven articles using systematic segmentation into clauses and classification of thematic progression patterns into re-iteration, zigzag, and multiple-theme patterns. The results reveal that the re-iteration pattern is the most frequently employed (28 instances), followed by the zigzag pattern (26 instances), and the multiple-theme pattern (7 instances). Thematic progression patterns significantly contribute to enhancing the coherence and clarity of the articles, allowing economic concepts to be effectively communicated. The findings underscore the strategic role of thematic organization in digital journalism, providing practical insights for journalists and scholars in understanding how economic information is structured and adapted for diverse audiences. This study contributes to linguistics and media studies by offering a deeper understanding of the interaction between thematic patterns and the communication of complex economic topics in the digital age.

Abstract

Abstract

Language is a social semiotic resource that individuals utilize to express meanings in context and achieve their purposes. In Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), the transitivity system is a common means used to construe human experience into a set of process types. The present study aimed to discover the process types of transitivity system in the legal document. Data was obtained from PT. Warlbor International Indonesia, Non-Disclosure Agreement and descriptive qualitative research was used as the research method. The findings show that the material processes have the highest frequency with 47 occurrences (50%) among all the processes. The relational processes come in the second highest frequency with 31 occurrences (33%), followed by the mental processes with 14 occurrences (15%) for third place. Verbal processes, with a total of 2 occurrences or 2%, rank in the fourth position. However, neither behavioural nor existential processes are discovered in the data sources analyzed. The highest percentage of material processes usage implies that legal documents primarily describe the external world, including things, events, and human actions or about what humans have done.

Abstract

This study revisits the perceptions of pre-service English teachers (PSETs) in Indonesia and Thailand on English as an International Language (EIL) concept. This topic under-study scrutinizes their beliefs about the EIL development and implementation, their exposure to diverse English varieties, and the cultural factors that influence their teaching approaches. Review of related literature and studies shows that there has been lack of comparative analysis between non-English-speaking countries regarding Indonesian dan Thai PSETs perception of EIL. This study, therefore, comprises the factors support and hinder the practice of English as an International Language (EIL) in Indonesia and Thailand and the PSETs in Indonesia and Thailand perceive the practice of English as an International Language (EIL) as the focuses understudy. This paper employs a qualitative research method comprised of interviews and observations to study the perspectives of the PSETs under-study. However, generalization of the phenomena will not be attempted as the limitation of the respondents for this study attempts the in-depth analysis of the perceived value on EIL teaching in Indonesia and Thailand. The study pursues a view PSETs as to convey the initial overview and comparison between two countries respecting the EIL practices.  This study focuses on 4 (four) PSETs from state high schools in Indonesia and Thailand. The study presents that while teachers acknowledge the global ownership of English, native-speaker norms still dominate assessment standards and curriculum design. Exposure to different English accents is recognized as beneficial, but challenges such as cultural resistance, resource limitations, and lack of real-life practice hinder effective EIL implementation. The findings suggest that systemic changes are needed in curriculum design, teacher training, and assessment methods to align with EIL principles. Future research should explore the long-term impact of EIL-based pedagogy and policy adaptations in non-English-speaking countries so that the practices can be positively beneficial for the implementation of EFL teaching in the context of non-native English-speaking countries.
