Abstract

PISA is an international scale assessment in which it measure mathematical literacy skills. Indonesia was one of the participants who took part in the PISA assessment. PISA results show that Indonesia is still at a low level. In fact, some study show that the ability of Indonesian students to solve PISA questions on the quantity content of students is not good and is still low compared to other content. This research aims to produce PISA-Like math questions with Quantity content that are valid, practical and have a potential effect on mathematical literacy skills. This research using a development research which consists of preliminary, self-evaluation, expert review, one-to-one, small group, and field test stages. The subjects in this study were students of class IX-4 SMP inone of the junior high schools in Medan. The results of this study are PISA-Like questions with Quantity content in valid and practical criteria. From the analysis of students’ answers regarding the potential effect involved in mathematical literacy, the results show that students involve communication skills, reasoning and argument skills, mathematical abilities, representation abilities, devising strategies for solving problems, and using symbolic, formal skill, and technical language and operations.

Abstract

This study was a research and development used ADDIE model aimed to produce mathematics textbook for 8th-grade students by applying five principles of the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach, included: phenomenological exploration, bridging by vertical instruments, self-reliance with students own constructions and productions, interactivity, and intertwining. The subject in this study involved 30 students' junior high school in Yogyakarta. The qualities of the developed textbook refer to three criteria, namely validity, practicality, and effectiveness. Supporting instruments used to examine three criteria for the quality of the textbook were validation sheets, assessment sheets for teachers and students, and students' mathematical communication ability test. The textbook meets the criteria of validity, practicality, and effectiveness if at least "good" from the results of validator assessments, the results analysis from teachers and student assessments, and at least 75% of the students' mathematical communication ability test results. Based on the results of this study, the developed textbook has met the criteria of validity (very good), practicality (very good by the teacher and good by students), and effectiveness (good for 86.67%). Therefore, developing textbooks is suitable to use as an alternative to enhance the students' mathematical communication ability.

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to improve students' creative thinking skills through the Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education approach when learning the topic of circles. This study was conducted as a Classroom Action Research, utilizing the Kemmis and McTaggart model and implemented in two cycles. The subjects of the research were 22 eleventh-grade students at a private high school in Yogyakarta. Data were collected using a creative thinking ability test, observation sheets, and teacher interviews. The findings indicate an increase in the students' mean scores from 74.03 in cycle I to 88.08 in cycle II. A significant improvement was observed in the flexibility and elaboration indicators, demonstrating students' capability to employ diverse strategies and articulate ideas in detail. Nevertheless, the originality indicator did not exhibit a comparable increase. This suggests that the IRME approach is effective in developing the majority of students' creative thinking aspects, yet it has not been fully optimized in fostering originality.

Abstract

Computational thinking (CT) is a crucial 21st-century skill that enables individuals to think logically, creatively, and structurally. In mathematics, CT plays a vital role in problem-solving and conceptual understanding. This study examines students' mathematical computational thinking abilities in the context of two-variable linear equation systems. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach involving 32 eighth-grade students. Data collection includes a test comprising four items aligned with CT indicators: decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithms. Additionally, four students were interviewed based on their performance to gain deeper insights into their CT processes. Findings indicate that students' computational thinking abilities significantly improved following the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach. High-performing students successfully demonstrated all CT indicators, effectively analyzing problems, identifying patterns, and applying structured solutions. However, students with lower competency levels struggled with problem identification, pattern recognition, and algorithmic implementation, indicating a need for targeted instructional support. The results underscore the importance of integrating CT into mathematics curricula to enhance logical reasoning and problem-solving skills. The challenges faced by some students highlight the necessity of differentiated instruction and scaffolding strategies to support CT development. This study emphasizes the role of PBL in fostering computational thinking in mathematics education. The findings provide valuable insights for educators and policymakers in designing curriculum strategies that align with 21st-century learning demands.
