Abstract

The development of national identity in a highly multicultural nation begins by identifying oneself to a particular ethnic group and realizing that multiculturalism is the bridge between both identities. This research aims to discover the link between national identity, ethnic identity, and multiculturalism in Indonesia, specifically for Javanese. This study utilized three measurement scales: (1) National Identity Scale to measure national identity; (2) Ethnic Identity Scale to measure the sense of belongingness to the Javanese ethnicity; and (3) Universal Diverse Orientation (UDO), to measure multiculturalism. This study's participants consist of 441 college students in Yogyakarta (male = 115; female = 326), ranging from 17 to 21. The regression analysis result shows that the mediation model supports this research hypothesis, namely that multiculturalism mediates the relationship between ethnic identity and national identity. Therefore, the current finding generates a new conception regarding the related theme.

Abstract

Adolescents often deal with pressures either from the internal or external environment that might trigger psychological issues related to behavior, emotion, academic achievement, and interpersonal relation. Specific intervention is particularly needed to improve adolescents’ subjective well-being in such situations. This research aimed at measuring the effectiveness of the Adolescent Mindfulness Program (Program Mindfulness Remaja, known as PRIMA) on adolescent subjective well-being. This research employed an experimental study with a switching replication design. Twenty-eight late adolescents aged 17-21 years-old previously identified with low or moderate subjective well-being participated in the study and received 9 sessions of the Mindfulness Program. Kentucky Inventory Mindfulness Scale (KIMS) was used to measure mindfulness and Satisfaction with Life Scale (SwSL) and Positive Affect & Negative Affect (PANAS) were used to measure subjective well-being. Results depicted significant improvement in adolescent subjective well-being (p= 0.000; p<0.001) after the intervention, with a therapeutic effect lasting for more or less than 2 weeks. The result of qualitative analysis indicated that self-compassion meditation was the most meaningful meditation for participants.

Participants were recruited purposively based on theory-based or operational construct sampling. Data analysis combined quantitative and qualitative methods, of which Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test was used for quantitative analysis, whereas qualitative analysis adopted a descriptive analysis. Quantitative findings significant difference in BDI score between before and after treatment (Z = -2.023 with p=  0.043<0.05). Qualitative findings showed that participants were able to find survival personality that emerged from past painful experiences and plays a role in the depression symptoms they are currently experiencing. With the power of love they find from God, they are able to accept themselves, and focus their lives on their potential and positive future plans. Abstract

It is well known that people with depressive illnesses are not very satisfied with their lives. There is a need to reduce depression’s symptoms in such ways so that the burden can be reduced. An intervention called Hypnotic Guided Imagery (HGI) was purposed to address this problem. Previously, HGI has been proven to be effective as a therapy to decrease depressive symptoms towards people with depression. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of HGI in virtual setting as a psychotherapy substitute for individuals with depressive disorders. This study employs an experimental methodology and a control group with a pretest-posttest design. Participants included up to 10 Indonesians that suffers from depression that was diagnosed earlier by doctors. They were split into intervention and control groups and the PANAS-X and PHQ-9 were given to the participants before and after intervention as an instrument to test the efficacy of HGI. Hypothetically, HGI has the capability to decrease depressive symptoms among people with depression. Proven, HGI has an effect on both the reduction of some unpleasant emotions and the enhancement of other positive ones. This promising finding leads to the conviction suggesting HGI has many more to offer.

Abstract

Abstract. Previous research has proven that individuals raised in intact family structures have better psychological well-being and academic achievement than those raised in non-intact families. However, these findings emphasize only the nuclear family and have not considered the living arrangement factor that allows social support from extended families such as those in the Minang community. This study involved N = 201 students of Minang ethnicity from intact families (n = 160) and non-intact families (n = 41) who lived with nuclear families (n = 162) and extended families (n = 39). The sampling technique was carried out with convenient sampling. The instrument used is the translated Ryff's PWB(Psychological Well-Being) scale with a reliability of 0.912. Meanwhile, data on academic achievement was obtained through the participants' IPK (cumulative grade point index). Family structure data is obtained from participants' answers to the marital status of biological parents. The living arrangement data is obtained from the answer to whom the participants live with to determine the presence/absence of extended family members in their home. The analysis showed no differences in psychological well-being and academic achievement regarding family structure and living arrangements. However, the interactionsbetween groups showed differences in PWB between groups of participants from intact families and groups of non-intact families who lived with only nuclear families. This research shows the importance of paying attention to the context of the participants' socio-cultural environment, producing different conclusions from previous findingsKeywords: academic achievement; extended family; intact family; Minang; non-intact family; nuclear family; psychological well-being.
