Abstract

Tamarillo (Solanum betaceum), a fruit native to South America, thrives in the highlands of Indonesia and is rich in bioactive compounds with significant potential for functional food development. This study employs a comprehensive literature review of 108 indexed national and international journals to explore the application of tamarillo in food products. Despite its nutritional benefits—such as high vitamin C, antioxidants, and dietary fiber—tamarillo remains underutilized in culinary applications. Current products incorporating tamarillo include syrup, ice cream, jam, soft candy, jelly, steamed bread, cheese, and yogurt. These products leverage tamarillo’s bioactive properties, such as its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, which contribute to health benefits like improved digestion, immune support, and chronic disease prevention. However, further research is needed to expand its applications and optimize its potential in functional foods

Abstract

Titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum Becc.) is an endemic species of Indonesia that is found naturally only in Sumatra and is classified as endangered, with an estimated 303 mature individuals remaining in their natural habitat. The population is decreasing due to deforestation, tuber exploitation, long flowering times, and protandry. Therefore, both in-situ and ex-situ conservation programs are necessary to preserve this species. The research aims to explore natural populations, analyze habitat conditions, develop propagation methods, and conduct reintroduction efforts to support the conservation of A. titanum. This study was conducted from 2023 to 2024 in Palupuah, Agam Regency, the Agriculture Faculty of Universitas Andalas, and several locations for the reintroduction of A. titanum. The research found that A. titanum habitat consists of forests rich in humus and litter, as well as banana cultivation areas. During the exploration, 7 individuals were identified: one in dormancy, one fruiting, and 5 in the vegetative phase. Seed germination experiments categorized seeds into seven classes based on their weight. The most dominant seed class weighed between 2.9 g and 3.2 g, comprising 38 seeds or 26.9% of the total. The germination rate and seedling growth were high, as all seeds exhibited 100% and produced seedlings of relatively uniform size. Propagation was carried out using in vitro culture techniques with petiole explants. The results showed that 2 mg L-1 benzyl aminopurine (BAP) successfully induced callus formation with a 100% induction rate, while a concentration of 1.5 mg L-1 achieved the highest shoot induction rate at 58.3%, with an average of 1.3 shoots and 7.9 roots per explant. The propagated seedlings were subsequently replanted in several locations for reintroduction activities.

Abstract

Plant breeding programs need to be carried out in order to improve the genetics of wheat that is able to adapt to tropical environments through hybridization, mutation induction, tissue culture, and genetic transformation.  In vitro culture through somatic embryogenesis pathways plays an important role in genetic improvement and its integration with other breeding programs can positively affect the improvement of wheat quality, quantity, and development in Indonesia. The purpose of this study was to obtain an embryogenic callus induction method from the Dewata variety using five different types of explants, namely mature Seeds, immature embryos, immature seeds, leaf,  stem, and to obtain combination of plant growth regulators and putrescine on somatic embryogenesis of wheat.   The experimental design was prepared based on a complete randomized design with a combination treatment of embryogenic callus induction media consisting of 9 levels, namely: 1 ppm 2.4- D, 1 ppm 2.4-D + 1 ppm Picloram, ppm 2.4-D + 1 mg / L Picloram, 1 ppm 2.4-D + 10-4  M Putrescine, 1 ppm 2.4-D + 1 ppm Picloram +10-4  M Putrescine, 2 ppm 2.4-D + 1 ppm Picloram + 10-4  M Putrescine, 1 ppm 2.4 D + 10-3 M Putrescine, 1 ppm 2.4 D + 1 ppm Picloram + 10-3 M Putrescine, 2 ppm 2.4 D + 1 ppm Picloram + 10-3 M Putrescine. The results showed that the media used was able to induce embryogenic callus using mature seed and immature embryo, but  immature seed and leaf were not able to produce embryogenic callus. The best media  that produced the highest percentage of embryogenic callus was 2 ppm 2.4-D + 1 ppm Picloram + 10-4  M Putrescine with as much as 85.9% in young embryo explants.

Abstract

The farmer's interest in garlic planting is low because the yield is unsatisfied. One reason is the use of small cloves. Giving paclobutrazol is expected to increase the size of garlic cloves and bulbs. This research aims to determine the interaction between concentration and time of giving paclobutrazol, which produces the best size for cloves and bulbs. The research is a factorial, Completely Randomized Design. The first factor is the concentration of paclobutrazol:250 mg.L-1 and 500 mg.L-1 of water. The second factor is the time of applying paclobutrazol: 6 and 10, 8 and 12, 10 and 14 weeks after planting (w.a.p). Data were analyzed using variance, which will be continued with DNMRT at the 5% level. The results showed that giving paclobutrazol at 10 and 14 w.a.p resulted in the highest apparent stem diameter and yield, but even so, the weight of the largest and the smallest cloves was the lowest. Meanwhile, giving paclobutrazol at 6 and 10 w.a.p resulted in the highest weight of the largest cloves 1.95 g and the highest of the smallest cloves 0.55 g, even though the apparent stem diameter and yield were the lowest. Treatment of 250 mg.L-1 paclobutrazol resulted in the highest weight of the largest cloves 1.80 g.

Abstract

This study aims to quantify the protein content in crude ficin enzymes obtained from the fruit and latex of various Ficus species and Papaya. This research has been encouraged by the considerable potential of these enzymes in different biotechnological applications, while data with regard to the protein content of these enzymes is limited. This study used a quantitative approach using qubit fluorometer to quantify the protein content in crude enzymes derived from the fruit and latex of these plants. Based on results, the protein content in crude ficin enzymes, two types of research obtained from Ficus aurata (Miq.) fruit was 0.92µg/ml and from papaya fruit as 3.16 µg/ml. For latex, it was observed that the protein content in crude ficin enzymes was determined as 6.14 µg/ml for Ficus aurata (Miq.), 2.58 µg/ml for Ficus racemosa L., and 5,27 µg/ml for Ficus padana Burm.f.. The protein content from papaya latex was 15,98 µg/ml. These findings show the differences in the protein content of the enzymes obtained from different species of Ficus and Papaya as a basis for further study on using these enzymes for biotechnological purposes.

Abstract

Rhizoctonia solani Kühn is a pathogenic fungus that causes sheath blight disease in rice. One effective strategy for managing this disease is the use of biological control, particularly through consortia of endophytic bacteria. This study aimed to identify the most effective endophytic bacterial consortium for suppressing sheath blight severity while also enhancing rice growth and yield. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was aemployed with six treatments, three replications, and three experimental units per treatment. The treatments included four bacterial consortia composed of combinations of Bacillus thuringiensis LmD13, Ochrobactrum intermedium LmB1, and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia LmB35, along with positive and negative controls. The experiment involved treating rice seeds and soaking seedling roots with the bacterial consortia before transplanting. R. solani was inoculated onto the rice leaf sheaths 40 days after planting. The effectiveness of each consortium as a biocontrol agent was evaluated based on incubation period, disease incidence, disease severity, and the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC). Their biostimulant potential was assessed through parameters related to seedling growth, plant development, and yield. Results indicated that the endophytic bacterial consortia effectively suppressed sheath blight and significantly improved rice growth and production. Notably, the consortium of B. thuringiensis LmD13, O. intermedium LmB1, and S. maltophilia LmB35 extended the incubation period to 35 days post-inoculation and reduced disease incidence, severity, and AUDPC to 22.22%, 0.29%, and 1.01, respectively. This consortium also enhanced rice yield, with fresh and dry grain weights reaching 72.78 g and 63.02 g, respectively, compared to the positive control. These findings suggest that this bacterial consortium holds strong potential as a biocontrol agent and yield enhancer in rice cultivation.

Abstract

Shallots are a high-value horticultural commodity. But so far, they have been mostly developed in the highlands. Shallots are plants that like areas with hotter air temperatures, so they are suitable for cultivation in the lowlands. Still, the soil that is widely available in the lowlands of the city of Padang is Ultisol. Ultisol contains high clay, so the soil becomes dense, the available nutrients are low, and the ground has difficulty passing water. Using Ultisol as a land for planting shallots, it requires using organic fertilizer in large doses. One of the agricultural waste products that is available and has yet to be widely used in Lambung Bukik Village is rice straw. Rice straw is a waste that is difficult to decompose. Therefore, it is necessary to use a decomposer to get compost faster. Training on making rice straw compost and making demonstration plots was carried out in Lambung Bukik, Padang City, to support the development of shallot cultivation on lowland Ultisol. Farmers are very enthusiastic about learning to cultivate shallots and making organic fertilizer from rice straw.
