Abstract

The coastal waters around the Mangrove Center Tuban, East Java is a potential habitat for the green mussel (Perna viridis L.). Therefore, the water quality of this area need to be assessment. The study was aimed to determine the feasibility of water quality in coastal water f Mangrove Center Tuban for application collecting gear of green mussels. The sampling was conducted by set up three stations randomly in studied area. Parameters was measured including temperature, pH, salinity, DO, depth, turbidity, BOD and TSS. The results showed that the coastal waters around the Mangrove Center Tuban, owned temperature that ranged from 29.10 to 30.67 0C, the pH ranged from 8.23 to 8.37, salinity ranged from 26.87 to 30.30 ‰, DO fall in the range of 6,63- 6.87 mg / L, the water depth at the time of measurement ranges from 40-85 cm. TSS ranged from 206.2 mg / L to 353.7 mg / L, BOD value between 4.05 to 12.2 mg / L, while the turbidity ranged from 134 to 400 NTU. Parameters that below the standard namely temperature, pH, DO, salinity and BOD, while TSS and turbidity were exceed the threshold quality standards set by the government.

Abstract

Abstract –The ability of mangrove (Avicennia) to absorb heavy metal has been known. This study aims to determine whether there are differences of absorption level of non-essential (Pb) essential (Cu) heavy metals in Avicennia marinafrom different location, based on distance of pollutants sources (downstream) toward to the mouth of Porong River Estuary at Sidoarjo. Results showed that accumulation of Pb in the roots and leaves was ranged from 0.0044 to 0.139 ppm and from 0.004 to 0.019 ppm respectively, while in sediment was ranged from 0.0560 to 0.0660 ppm. The accumulation of Cu in the roots and leaves was ranged from 0.07 to 0.415 ppm and 0.0318 to 0.2520 ppm while in sediments was from 0.2930 to 0.381 ppm. The highest concentration of Pb and Cu were found from sediments followed by roots and leaves. The high concentration of heavy metal (Pb and Cu) in the root is likely due to sediment size. The high concentration of heavy metal (Pb and Cu) in the root is likely due to sediment size. When the size is finer, heavy metal accumulation will be higher, although there was no significantly different from different location.

Abstract

Indonesia is known as a country with the highest potential production of tuna, with total production more than six hundred thousand ton per year as value as 6.3 trillion IDR per year. However, Tuna fishery have several challenges, as can be identify by the declining in productivity and an average length fish had been caught, and also tuna fishing groundsaregetting farther. This apparently appears as a result of inaccurate determination of fish stock as the basic management unit of tuna fisheries, especially in yellow fin tuna (YFT). This study aims to define population stocks of YFTin South Java Sea based on genetic information. Samples were taken from three fish landing ports (MuaraBaru, Cilacap and Benoa). Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) technique were applied for Cytochrome Oxidase I genes, using restriction enzymes;HaeIII, RsaI, BamHI, XhoI, and AluI. Genetic variation in populations were evaluated with POPGENE32 software. Result indicate that finer scale of stocks present YFT and should bemanaged differently for effective management purpose and to maintain sustainability of this species.
