Abstract

Rice husk is an agricultural waste abundant in silica (SiO₂). SiO2 extracted from rice husk has a porous structure, so it has the potential to be used as an adsorbent material. To increase the stability and effectiveness of the adsorption process, SiO2 was modified by adding Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) and used to removal Congo red dye. SiO₂ extraction was carried out through a calcination process at three different temperatures, namely 600, 700, and 800 °C. Morphological analysis and elemental composition using SEM-EDX showed the presence of a polymer layer on the surface of the material, which functions as a distribution medium for SiO₂ particles. In addition, an increase in carbon (C) content was detected after the addition of PVA, confirming the presence of PVA in the composite. The optimum conditions for the adsorption process of Congo red dye by SiO₂-PVA were obtained at pH 1, contact time 75 minutes, and solution concentration 75 mg/L. Experimental data showed that the Langmuir isotherm model was most suitable for describing adsorption behavior compared to the Freundlich model, with an adsorption capacity of 14.31 mg/g. These results indicate that SiO₂-PVA has the potential as an alternative adsorbent for the treatment of waste containing dyes.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to synthesize nanomagnetic Fe3O4 using matoa (Pometia Pinnata) leaf extract and test its antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). The resulting nanomagnets were characterized using a Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) to determine magnetic properties, phase type, and crystal size using X-ray diffraction (XRD), morphology, and element composition using Scanning Electron Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) and functional group using Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR). Furthermore, the Fe3O4 obtained was tested for antibacterial activity against Gram-Positive and Gram-negative bacteria, namely S. aureus and E. coli. Characterization results show that the average crystal size of Fe3O4 is 12.07 nm and has magnetic properties of 68.01 emu/g, morphology shows that it forms aggregates of unequal sizes. FTIR characterization results show the presence of -OH, -CH, C=C, H-C-H, C-O, and Fe-O groups. The results of the anti-bacterial Fe3O4 test were able to inhibit S. aureus and E. coli bacteria at a concentration of 5000 ppm with an inhibitory zone diameter of 11,0 mm and 10,5 mm respectively. These results show that the nanomagnetic compound Fe3O4 has antibacterial activity.

Abstract

The increasing contamination with microorganisms has driven the development of effective, environmentally friendly antibacterial materials. Biochar was used as a porous matrix to support the dispersion of MnFe₂O₄ particles and to enhance the material's surface area. This study aims to synthesize a rice husk–based biochar/MnFe₂O₄ composite and evaluate its structural and morphological characteristics, as well as antibacterial activity. The composite was synthesized by coprecipitation and characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy–Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM–EDX), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Antibacterial activity was evaluated using the disk diffusion method against Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) at concentration variations of 1000–5000 mg/L. XRD results confirmed the formation of a spinel MnFe₂O₄ phase, as indicated high-intensity diffraction peaks   at 31.56° and 35.22° and the average crystallite size calculated using the Scherrer equation was approximately 27.1 nm, indicating the formation of nanocrystalline domains. SEM analysis revealed that MnFe₂O₄ nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed on the biochar surface, while EDX confirmed the presence of C, O, Mn, and Fe elements. FTIR analysis identified –OH, C=O, and C–O functional groups, along with characteristic Mn–O and Fe–O vibrations, confirming successful composite formation. Antibacterial activity increased with concentration, reaching a maximum inhibition zone of 7.2 mm against both E. coli and S. aureus at 5000 mg/L, indicating mild antibacterial performance. The composite exhibits eco-friendly characteristics due to its biomass-derived biochar matrix and offers magnetic separability, facilitating easy recovery and potential reuse for sustainable environmental applications. Keywords: Rice husk biochar, MnFe₂O₄, antibacterial activity

Abstract

Cr(III) is one of the most stable chromium species in nature, Cr(III) species are not carcinogenic to humans, but if the levels in the body exceed 0.2 mg / day it is very dangerous for the body especially in the respiratory tract. The presence of chromium in the aquatic environment is so low that it is very difficult to detect it using instruments with various limitations to detect it, therefore preconcentration techniques are carried out to overcome the issue. In this study the water sample was adjusted pH using HNO3 0.1 M or NaOH 0.1 M, after which it was passed in the dowex column 50WX2-200. Furthermore, an elution process was carried out using the 1 M HNO3 eluent, the eluat was measured for absorbance with flame AAS. The results of Cr(III) preconcentration optimization are: resin weight 0.5 g, HNO3 eluent concentration 1 M, solution pH 3 and sample volume 50 – 100 mL. The Cr(III) preconcentration technique using Dowex 50WX2-200 resin has been applied to river water samples with a detectable concentration of 0.0075 mg/L.
