Abstract

The uncontrolled COVID-19 transmission has changed the socio-demographic conditions of households in Surakarta City. These changes influenced households’ decisions on spending and consumption due to the implementation of social distancing and mobility restriction policies. Thus, this study aims to (1) identify the socio-demographic characteristics of households, (2) identify food shopping and consumption patterns of households due to COVID-19 and the implementation of the PSBB policy, and (3) estimate the relationship between socio-demographic conditions and food shopping and consumption patterns during the COVID-19 pandemic in Surakarta City. This study collected data from 120 respondents through an online survey from August 2021 to September 2021. The results indicated that households reduced food purchases, often bought food from local stores, and often shopped in small stores. Meanwhile, the change in consumption patterns was the increased frequency of in-home activities, namely eating alone or with family and sparing time to improve cooking habits at home. Through chi-square analysis, changes in households’ shopping and consumption patterns were found to be significant to some socio-demographic characteristics, including age, education level, income, and occupation. The results of this study can provide information to the government to design evidence-based policies during post-pandemic recovery in Surakarta City

Abstract

ABSTRACT The issue of economic recovery after the eruption of Mount Semeru has become a concern for stakeholders, in this case the government wants to get a quick and appropriate solution so that it has a direct impact on the community. Communities in Candipuro, Lumajang district, were significantly affected by the Semeru eruption on agricultural land. Based on satellite data released by the National Disaster Management Agency in 2021, more than 161.5 hectares of agricultural land were destroyed in Lumajang. Due to the limited agricultural land, it is very effective in greenhouse applications as a new potential in unproductive areas. The advantages of the greenhouse are that plants can grow and produce throughout the year in a sustainable manner without being much influenced by the season, the quality of crop yields is more guaranteed, the use of fertilizers and irrigation is more efficient, the risk of pest attacks and the threat of plant diseases is lower. Based on this background, this community service activity aims to recover the economy through optimization of superior plant cultivation by building greenhouse units, installation and cultivation training to marketing assistance for crops. The implementation method used in this activity includes three methods, namely Socialization, Counseling with Participatory Rural Appraisal Techniques and Mentoring. The results showed that the enthusiasm of the farmer groups is very high, even up to the proactive community harvesting process for the program initiated by the chairman through Community service for doctoral degrees activities, namely making greenhouses with drip irrigation systems on melon and peppers plants. In fact, this empowerment activity has succeeded in becoming a pioneer for other farmer groups to build hydroponic melon and peppers greenhouses. Abstract

The increasing number of consumers’ purchase intention on green products can be seen through the rising number of individuals who are willing to pay more for these products, and it proves this problem has attracted the attention of many circles. This article aims to examine what factors can influence the growth of student purchase intention on green products. The expansion of the Theory of Planned Behaviour was carried out to include two factors that are expected to influence student purchase intention, namely environmental knowledge and self-transcendence. Cluster random sampling is used to select samples that previously have been calculated using the Taro Yamane formula and the Parel formula with a total sample size of 136 samples. The results processed with the SEM-PLS (Structural Equation Model - Partial Least Square) showed that environmental knowledge was found to be unable to influence student purchase intention on green products, this is supported by the statement that high knowledge is not always in line with attitudes and practices generated. Self-transcendence was found to affect the growth of student purchase intention in green products, and this can happen because self-transcendence can affect the formation of consumer purchase intention.

Abstract

Changes in natural resources have presented major problems for farming communities in rural areas. In general, farmers diversify their livelihoods in the non-agricultural sector without paying attention to the impact on the availability of natural resources in the future. Sand mining activity has become one of the short-term solutions for farming communities in rural areas. As a result, a problem such as land degradation occurs in the village, thereby generating negative impacts on the availability of nature for the next generation. This study aimed to analyze the causes of land degradation and describe the Integrated Farming System (IFS) as a solution to address the land degradation problem in Bambang Village, Wajak District, Malang Regency. This study applied a qualitative case study research design, and the research methods included in-depth interviews with 40 informants, observation, and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The location of this study was determined by purposive sampling, considering that Bambang Village is one of the villages affected by land degradation due to sand mining. The results of the study revealed that land degradation was due to the vulnerability of the farming community; thus, another alternative was proposed to utilize part of the land (20%) as a sand mining area without neglecting environmental preservation as a reward for environmental services. In addition, IFS and the actors as ecopreneurs were considered as alternative solutions to meet the needs and to prepare the farming community resilience through ecological preservation by sustaining the ecosystem balance. In practice, IFS requires integration among stakeholders, farmers and concerned institutions.

Abstract

Tuna commodity turns out to be one of fishery commodities contributing to an export increase by value above the average of 18.57%. This is an opportunity for Indonesia to improve the country's economy by utilizing existing fishery resources. Thus, government policies are needed in order to support the export performance of fishery products. This research was conducted to determine the impact of government policies toward tuna fish commodities in Malang. The method used was the Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM) that aimed at knowing the impact of government policies on tuna commodities. In this study, the respondents were 30 tuna fishermen at TPI Pondokdadap. The results of analysis showed that there were subsidies, taxes, and trade restrictions in input factor. Nonetheless, in output factor, fishermen did not receive subsidies. The existence of a policy on input is very helpful for fishermen so as to reduce production costs, while in the output policy the community receives more benefits at low output prices. However, it can be seen from the DRC and PCR values that they are less than one. This means that the tuna fish commodity in Malang still has comparative and competitive advantages in competitiveness.

Abstract

Although past studies have shown that cooperatives can improve the welfare of rural communities. However, many farmers did not aware about the cooperative advantages. This begs a question as to whether cooperatives really contribute to the rural incomes and economies. This study aims to assess farmers’ perception on cooperative membership and how members have adopted innovative technologies. Data were obtained from a survey with 300 dairy farmers in Malang and Batu, East Java. The data were examined using a descriptive analysis. The results showed that farmers who do not join any cooperatives perceive that the institution is not able to determine the quality of their milk produce. Meanwhile, farmers who are members of a cooperative perceive that the institution can maintain stability of milk produce’s sales prices. This implies that education about cooperatives among farmers needs to be improved so that they can objectively view the benefits of cooperative membership and make informed decision in their economic activities.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the demand for tomato SCP in Manggarai Regency. The participants were 82 farmers, 7 middlemen, and 16 retailers. The characteristics of the farmers were homogeneous in terms of having a limited area of approximately 0.1-0.5 hectares. A simple random sampling method was then used to determine the participants. Slovin’s formula was used to determine the farmer participants. The snowball sampling method was used to assess the sample of middlemen. Market structure data was analyzed by market share, and market concentration used CR4 estimates. Whereas, consumer conduct had been descriptively studied in relation to pricing strategies and business integration. Market performance estimation was made by measuring the margin and the farmer’s share. The results showed that the structure of the market for tomatoes in Manggarai Regency was oligopolistic and very concentrated. The CR4 values were as follows: middlemen (69.95 %), retailers (54.57%) and farmers (13.05 per cent). Meanwhile, the market structure affected the market conduct in which traders as price determinant and farmers as price takers. In addition, the middlemen established vertical business integration as an attempt to expand their business, dominate the market and increase their income. Oligopoly market structure and market conduct affected the tomato market in Manggarai Regency. The tomato market performance was inefficient as seen from a wide margin but having small farmer’s share. The margin values for channels I and II were Rp12.151,00 and Rp11.525,00 respectively. Whereas the farmer’s share was 36.46 percent and 39.74 percent respectively. Reflecting to the results, an accessible price information service is extremely needed for farmers to minimize asymmetry information. In addition, farmers need to maximize the role and work of farmers' groups as a joint marketing agency in order to increase their bargaining position.
