Abstract

This study aims to investigate the implementation of picture storybooks integrated with the blended learning method through LMS for young learners in fourth-grade students in English literacy learning. In this study, the researchers used an experimental design. The research chosen by the researchers is a post-test-only control group design. Document analysis and statistical analysis of students’ score was used to compare their literacy skills. The research sample was 70 fourth-grade students at SDN 3 Banjar Jawa Singaraja. The results showed that there were significant differences in students’ score while they learned English literacy using picture storybooks integrated with the blended-based learning method. The data obtained then tested using the independent sample t-test, the result showed sig. (2-tailed) is 0.011, which the observed significant level (sig. 2-tailed) is smaller than the standard alpha level (α=0.05). From the result obtained also showed that the use of picture storybooks integrated with the blended learning methods can help students learn in English literacy teaching. Therefore, the use of picture storybooks integrated with the blended-based learning methods is highly recommended because it has a significant influence on English literacy learning for young learners, besides it can also create fun and effective learning.

Abstract

Nowadays, the number of fitness influencers from both genders is rapidly increasing in the fitness industry. Both genders have their language features and characteristics that can be seen in their Tiktok videos. This study aimed to investigate the features and typical characteristics of the language used by Indonesian male and female fitness influencers. This study applied a qualitative descriptive research method by analyzing the video script based on Lakoff’s Theory (1973) and Tennan’s Theory (1990). The findings indicated that male fitness influencers typically speak with greater directness and assertiveness. Also, basic and simple words are mostly used by male influencers. On the contrary, female fitness influencers mostly use extensive vocabulary in their rapport talk. It is intended that this study would serve as the foundation for further investigation related to language gender.

Abstract

EMI (English as Medium of Instruction) is an innovative teaching approach where subjects other than English are taught to the students in English, a second or foreign language. This approach has been widely adopted in European and Asian tertiary education institutions, including Indonesia. However, only a limited number of research has been carried out to reveal the student’s perception of the advantages and drawbacks of the implementation in the country. This study, therefore, aimed at investigating the students’ perceptions of the advantages and drawbacks of EMI implementation in one state university in Bali, Indonesia. This study employed mixed-method research, which was carried out with 130 participants enrolled in the international class initiation. The obtained data were collected through questionnaires and interviews. The results of the study showed five significant advantages of EMI class: cognitive advantages, resource availability, rich exposure to English and chances to use it, career opportunity, and improvement of students’ motivation in English. However, EMI students also encountered challenges such as difficulties comprehending lectures/materials, taking tests, and low participation in classroom discussions.

The population divided become two classes, thirty were students in the control group class, and thirty students were in the experimental group class. This researcher used purposive sampling. The control group class was taught by listening to the teacher, and the experimental group class was taught via podcast. In collecting data, this research used the listening test provided in the pre-test and post-test. To analyse data, the researchers implemented SPSS version 26 of the independent t-test to examine the significant difference in the scores between the control group and experimental group to enhance English listening comprehension. After giving the treatment by implementing podcasts, they revealed that podcasts enhance students' English listening comprehension skills.

Abstract

Scaffolding in learning has been argued to facilitate the students’ progress. As the educational paradigm inevitably shifts into online modes, strategies for scaffolding provision need to be adjusted. This study aimed to understand the nature of the online learning environment and explore the aspects, types, and methods of scaffolding provision in online learning contexts by adopting George's (2008) research method into a qualitative design. The data were collected from experts' opinions and previous studies, as published in reputable international journals, using Education Resources Information Center (https://eric.ed.gov/), Google Scholar (https://scholar.google.com), and Research Gate (https://www.researchgate.net) as the databases. The research result is presented in an informal method. The review reveals that critical aspects of scaffolding are contingency, fading, and transfer of responsibility, which are applicable in synchronous and asynchronous learning with the support provided by peers, teachers, or technology through static or dynamic interaction. Based on its purpose, the four types of scaffolding are procedural, conceptual, metacognitive, and strategic, which can be performed strategically in online contexts through orientation to the course structure, access to resource and tools, critical thinking development, guidance to problem-solving, provisions of hints, sufficient examples, probing questions, and providing constructive feedback. These findings imply the importance of implementing scaffolding strategies in online learning contexts, although further studies need to be conducted to provide more comprehensive scaffolding models.
