Abstract

This research analyzed the language style of Joko Widodo's speech in chatting with the hosts of three YouTube channels. The videos were published on January 18, March 17, and April 16, 2019. The writer applied two theories in analyzing the speech: S.P.E.A.K.I.N.G theory from Dell Hymes (1974) and Martin Joos' theory (1976) about language styles. S.P.E.A.K.I.N.G is derived from the situation, participants, ends, act, key, instrumentality, norms, and genre. While language styles are divided into five, those are frozen or oratorical, formal or deliberative, consultative, casual, and intimate styles. This study is qualitative descriptive research. In analyzing the data, the writer did it by watching those videos, transcribing President Joko Widodo's speech, classifying the data or speech based on the language styles, narrating the data, and the last step was interpreting. Through the analysis, the writer finds that the most prominent style used by Joko Widodo is the casual style.

Abstract

This research is motivated by two problems, firstly language as a communication instrument used by children, and secondly children as users and users of language. In terms of language, we can observe that the nature of language is very dynamic and tends to change. Meanwhile, in terms of language users, we can also observe the dynamics of language that occurs in children continuously. The aims of this study were to: 1) Determine the language changes of children who are transitioning from pre-pubertal to early post-pubertal 2) To determine the language changes in the post-pubertal period in the relationship between language and thought; whether language affects the mind, or thoughts that affect language change. 3) Knowing the relationship between language changes and language politeness in the pre-post-pubertal period. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. This research was conducted through observation of empirical facts and phenomena witnessed by researchers as they are. Therefore, all visible phenomena are recorded and detailed without considering right or wrong. Thus this study seeks to provide a reflection of the data obtained from the object of research directly. The findings of this study are 1) Pre-pubertal language changes undergo a transition due to age and relationships built by speakers in the post-pubertal period. 2) The language of children who are experiencing a transition period is reciprocal with their thoughts. Therefore, language at the post-pubertal period can affect thoughts and thoughts can also affect a person's language changes. 3) The politeness of a child's language in the post-pubertal period cannot be seen through politeness norms alone but must also look at the language solidarity factor of peers for speakers and speakers in the principle of speech cooperation.

Besides, to support the teaching and learning process, the school has a special program namely, orientation and induction programs, and reflection and follow-up program. In addition, the problems of teachers are mainly about the adaptation, emotional bonding, limited time allotment, students’ mood and focus, students’ social skill and characters, teachers’ preparation, parents’ involvement, lack of facilities and technical skill and cost. The results of this study have important implications for classroom practice as it can be used as a resource and as the foundation for more detailed information strategy of the teaching and learning process during the pandemic.

Abstract

Parental involvement in inclusive school is crucial for the development of children with special needs. Thus, the present study observed an inclusive primary school in Denpasar to identify the types of parental involvement in the school, the school's programs to involve parents, and the challenges faced by the teachers in involving parents in their children's education. Following Miles' and Huberman's (1994) model of Interactive Qualitative Data Analysis combined with Epstein's et al. (2002) types of parental involvement at school, the present study revealed that 1) all the six types of parental involvement’s in Epstein’s model were identified with an average of moderate frequency; 2) Seven programs were designed to involve the parents, namely, parenting seminar, class conference, WhatsApp Group discussion, Guest teacher, interactive project, field trip, and collaboration with English-speaking community; 3) there were moderate challenges in involving parents in communicating with the schools, in decision making, and in enrolling the parents in the school activities. This implies that there should be more deliberate effort from the parents in inclusive schools to be more involved in their children’s education, while schools should relentlessly initiate and inspire more intensive parental involvements in the schools’ program.
