Abstract

Abstract

The sustainable availability of clean water is crucial for supporting academic, residential, and institutional operational activities in higher education settings. In general, previous research has primarily focused on clean water planning at the city or regional level, without examining the need and availability of water on boarding campuses that have distinct consumption patterns and distribution systems. This research aims to fill the gap by conducting an integrated evaluation of water needs and availability, serving as the basis for preparing a water management master plan at the West Sumatra IPDN Campus. A mixed-methods approach is employed, combining quantitative analysis based on SNI 03-7065-2005 to estimate water needs with qualitative analysis of infrastructure conditions and water quality through field surveys, interviews, and laboratory tests. The results showed that the water demand reached 92,150 liters/day (1.1 liters per second), while the source capacity was 5.03 liters per second, resulting in a surplus of 1,839%. Although the water supply was quantitatively adequate, quality tests revealed turbidity and bacteriological contamination at some distribution points, attributed to the corrosion of galvanized pipes and the absence of secondary filtration. This confirms that sufficient quantity does not guarantee the quality and efficiency of distribution. Therefore, network modernization, the implementation of layered filtration, and periodic monitoring are necessary. This research contributes to the development of a sustainable campus water management model in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study was conducted to assess the performance of the PNP Reservoir in managing water resources as well as reducing flood risk in the Batu Busuk Sub-watershed, which is located in the upstream part of the Kuranji watershed, Padang City. The uniqueness of this study lies in the comprehensive approach that combines IDF analysis with three methods (Talbot, Sherman, and Ishiguro), flood discharge estimation through the Rational and Nakayasu SUH methods, and modeling of reservoir inflows and outflows using the Muskingum flood routing method. Based on the results of the IDF analysis, the highest rain intensity during the two-hour duration was recorded at 27.22 mm/hour (Talbot), 24.67 mm/hour (Sherman), and 23.49 mm/hour (Ishiguro). Before the reservoir was constructed, the peak flood discharge reached 0.33 m³/sec at 0.35 hours. The simulation results showed that the reservoir was able to reduce the peak discharge by 0.57% and caused a delay in the peak flow of 0.6 minutes. This finding shows that the PNP reservoir contributes positively to flood control, although the efficiency of the reduction is still limited. Overall, the results of this study can serve as an important reference in the design of adaptive reservoirs in areas characterized by steep topography and high rainfall, and emphasize the role of reservoirs as part of sustainable flood mitigation infrastructure in tropical urban areas.

Abstract

The main triggering factor for landslides is high rainfall intensity, especially during the rainy season. Excessive rainfall can cause an increase in water content in the soil, which in turn will reduce the shear strength of the soil and increase the volume weight of the soil. The method used is a laboratory experiment by taking samples from the field. The sample of this study was sandy clay soil taken from a landslide-prone area located in Talamau District, West Pasaman Regency. Based on the results of soil geotechnical laboratory tests in the landslide-prone zone in Talamau District, West Pasaman Regency, it can be concluded that the soil sample has moderate plasticity characteristics with a Liquid Limit of 59.39%, Plastic Limit of 49.77%, and Plasticity Index of 9.62%. The soil reaches a maximum dry density of 1.37 gr/cm³ at an optimum water content of 500 ml, with a grain size distribution dominated by the sand fraction (83.978% retained on sieve No. 4-20) and a very low fine material content (1.234%). The results of the triaxial test showed soil behavior that varied from brittle to strain-hardening depending on the level of cell stress. Overall, the soil can be classified as well-graded sand with good drainage but low cohesion, thus requiring additional stabilization for construction applications in landslide-prone areas.
