Abstract

Abstract

This research aims at (1) studying the microfinance program run by and the organization of Yayasan Olat Parigi/ Olat Parigi Foundation (YOP) as part of PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara’s Corporate Social Responsibility; (2) formulating the development strategy for the organization and microfinance program for self-reliance and sustainability. This study employs qualitative approach and supported by quantitative approach. The study shows that: Firstly, theorganizational management of YOP constitutes two periods of services namely YOP Part I and YOP Part II. In comparison, the organizional management and program run by YOP Part II is better than YOP Part I as demonstrated by a number of improvements in some aspects including management of administration, human resources, budgeting, microfinance program and business unit strategic. However, this study has identified weaknesses in the area of self-reliance, resilience, and sustainability as shown in high dependency of the foundation to PTNNT (both in financing and facilitation). The Microfinance program has been implemented as per applicable SOP where clients are facilitated to obtain easy access and capability to fulfill the requirements, simplified procedures, right on target, up to date, consistent with characteristics of the locals and most importantly it provides more benefits for the locals.A number of challenges identified in running the microfinance program include high number of Non-Performing Loan, limited financing scheme, and inadequate assistance and/or capacity to the program beneficiaries. Secondly, the development strategy for organizational and microfinance programs shall be improved to reach a self-reliance, resilience, and sustainability of the program through implementation of bounding, bridging, and creating/ networking strategies. Keywords: CSR,development strategy, institution, microfinance

Abstract

ABSTRACTTo overcome some economic difficulties, especially poverty, most poor people in the rural area decide to adopt a migration strategy (especially going to foreign countries). The decision to become international migrants contributes to the national economy (foreign exchange) at the macro level and their nuclear family (remittance) at the micro level. The remittance or cash money, in turn, enables them to meet their needs and even accumulate some assets (e.g. land and house) to be used as capital, resulting in a transformation of local agrarian structure. Some studies showed that the welfare of migrants’ families has increased significantly. Such an improved welfare of poor rural families has made rural community more dynamic in the vertical social mobility, including the efforts to extend their contract and motivate family members and the community to become international migrants (theory of cumulative causes, poverty-agrarian proposition, and poverty-migration proposition). This study has four initial hypotheses, namely: (1) change in agrarian structure affects poverty condition, (2) poverty (agrarian) affects population mobility, (3) population mobility (resulted remittance) affects agrarian structure, and (4) structural change in agraria causes new poverty. The diverse management and utilization of agrarian resources (poverty condition and the choice of population mobility —international migration) imply changes in the local agrarian structure which in turn produces new poverty and new agrarian classes. Keywords: agrarian structure, poverty, population mobility, persistenceABSTRAKMasyarakat miskin pedesaan pada akhirnya memilih menjadi pelaku migran dalam upaya mengatasi sejumlah kesulitan ekonomi (mengatasi masalah kemiskinan) yang dihadapinya.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to find out and explain the destructive fishing practices occurred in Taka Bonerate National Park area and the factors that caused it. Data retrieval was conducted with in-depth interview techniques, literature studies and documents. The results showed that destructive fishing practices were still prevalent in the Taka Bonerate National Park area, both using chemicals (cyanide) and those using explosives (bombs) in fishing activities. The conclusions from this study are that fisheries destructive activities are generally not carried out individually but in groups, namely 3-4 people led by a captain. There are several contributing factors to the proliferation of destructive fishing practices in the small islands of Taka Bonerate National Park. Where they are still under guarded, and the conflicts of authority among the Taka Bonerate National Park management authorities, conflicts between fishermen, and availability of bombs and cyanides raw materials. The other are strong position of retainer and weak position of mustard in patron client relations between punggawa-sawi. The last factor but not least, that there are markets for them to sell the bombs and cyanide fishing.

The results of this research show that the distribution of benefits that is obtained by the community who manages the ecotourism is an increase and more stable income compared to their previous income as fishermen. Therefore, equality in access and power for the community is needed to open new oppurtunities to obtain benefits from managing the ecotourism and also reinforcement of the performance of the institution’s management.
