Abstract

This study reveals the role of Balian in preserving traditional medicine as well as balancing the culture and mental health of the people on the Island of the Gods. This research was designed using a qualitative approach (medical ethnography). Informants were Hindu priests (Pemangku), local health workers and traditional medical experts (Balian). The research location was conducted in Balinese historical places that are believed to be qualified as a place to conduct traditional healing practices by a Balian, such as Pura (Pure), Holy Purifier (Tirta) and Beaches in Bali. The results show that the sickness and health of the Balinese ethnic soul refers to the concept of balancing the system elements in the body with cultural influences in the environment. Ethnic Balinese believe in the concept of Tri Hita Karana, which is the balance between Sang Hyang Widhi (God), Buana Agung (Universe) and Buana Alit (Human). If a person's physical or spiritual condition experiences an imbalance of these three things, then health is disturbed. In looking at the etiology of mental illness, they more than fully consider the abstract (non-physical) type of illness. The implication is that they seek Balian treatment as a primary option.

Abstract

Mononormativity widely embraced by societies, often leads to negative sentiment toward non-monogamous relationships. Polygamy, as a form of non-monogamy, challenges this norm, particularly when practiced consensually, revealing a divergence from assumptions that label such relationships as destructive. In Indonesia, where Islam predominates, polygamy is conditionally legitimate under religious law and mutual agreement. However, it frequently faces public criticism and rejection, especially on social media. Religious figures like Ustadz Hanan Attaki, who practice polygamy, often become targets of this negative sentiment, revealing the tension between cultural norms, religious legitimacy, and societal perceptions. This study aims to analyze how mononormativity functions as a form of knowledge-power in constructing negative sentiments towards polygamists, especially ustadz, on social media. Utilizing primary data from social media comments and secondary data from online media and supporting articles, the research employs an explanatory sequential mixed method, where quantitative data supports qualitative insights. Combining sentiment analysis using NVivo and Foucaldian discourse analysis, the paper uncovers how societal norms and power structures shape and reinforce negative sentiments towards polygamists. The quantitative data provides a broad understanding of public opinion, while the qualitative analysis delves deeper into the discourses that perpetuate mononormativity. Through this integration, the study highlights the significant influence of mononormative discourse in shaping societal attitudes and maintaining power dynamics that marginalize non-monogamous relationships.

Abstract

The popularity of the digital literary platform Wattpad has been recognized globally, including in Indonesia and Libya. Among various studies on fiction published through Wattpad, this research focuses on a comparative analysis of romance formulas written by popular Wattpad authors from two countries: La'nat al-'Ishq by Hams Yosef in Libya and Abighea by Chelsea Karina Aelia in Indonesia. The main issue addressed in this study is whether romance stories in digital fiction from these countries share the same narrative formula despite the cultural differences between the authors and their readers. The comparison is conducted using John G. Cawelti’s theory of formulaic literature and a descriptive-analytical method. The findings indicate that the dominant formulas in both fictions are the idealization of the main characters, love triangles, and happy endings. This suggests that, although these works are set in different cultural and linguistic contexts, their romance formulas reflect universal desires and expectations of young readers concerning the romance genre.

Abstract

Nadine Labaki's Capernaum represents the impact of poverty on the fulfillment of children's rights. In this article, the issue of poverty and its social consequences are analyzed through the story of the main character Zain, a street child who struggles with all forms of poverty in Lebanon. Using Gramsci's theory of hegemony, the research reveals how poverty, as a form of economic hegemony, affects children's lives and how they resist these conditions in their capacity as children. The analysis focuses on the representation of poverty and its influence on the fulfillment of children's rights, especially the rights to survival, protection, development, and participation. The research findings show that the film creates awareness of social issues, such as poverty and children's rights, and encourages children as members of society to take concrete actions against the hegemony. It is also a critique of the power that overrides children's rights and considers children as passive objects in society.

Abstract

This study analyzes social criticism in Yusuf Idris's short story Hikayah Mishriyyah Jiddan using a sociology of literature perspective. The focus of the research is to identify social criticism and its connection to the social reality of Egypt. The method used is descriptive qualitative, employing Karl Marx's theory of social criticism, which encompasses issues of economics, politics, culture, and morality. The findings reveal criticism of economic inequality, systemic corruption, cultural shifts eroding empathy, and moral degradation. This criticism is conveyed through the interaction between the taxi driver and the beggar, representing the social dynamics of Egyptian society. The short story not only presents a fictional narrative but also reflects social issues relevant to its time. This study affirms that literary works play a significant role as a medium of social criticism to raise public awareness.

Abstract

This study explains the transformation of the Dawuhan Tradition in Ngerso, Tawangmanggu, which is influenced by changes in religious practices that develop in the local community. This study uses a Cultural Studies approach to analyze changes in symbols and rituals that occur in the ceremony. The theory chosen in this study is Derrida's deconstruction theory, which is determined to reveal and understand the layers of meaning behind cultural and religious transformations. The main objective of this study is to show how negotiations between local traditions and religious influences reshape the implementation of the Dawuhan Tradition. Descriptive and qualitative methods collect data through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. The results of this study indicate that there are changes in the implementation of the Dawuhan Ceremony, such as changes in the time of implementation, replacement of sacred elements, and changes in offerings presented to ancestors. These changes are a reflection of the cultural negotiations that occur between local traditions and religious influences. This negotiation is carried out to maintain the relevance of the ritual in the context of modern life. In conclusion, this study provides an overview of the complex socio-cultural dynamics in society (religion and culture); tradition must adapt to social change without losing its essence. This research implies that it is a form of preserving tradition in changing times, which is done by reinterpreting it to be more relevant. On the other hand, this research also shows the existence of social and political hegemony over changes in tradition, and it can be underlined that the flexibility and ambiguity of Javanese tradition allow society to negotiate and adapt to change without losing its cultural identity.

Abstract

The current technological developments, which are all online, require innovations in the teaching methods for the Arabic language, especially listening skills (maha>ratul-istima'), which are usually conducted offline in the classroom or language laboratory by directly listening to the pronunciation from the lecturer or native speaker via recording or video, then imitating and writing down the transcription results. Considering the current technological developments that cover all aspects, including education and teaching, there is a need for innovations in the teaching methods for language skills, especially listening skills, which, first in the form of face-to-face (offline) practice, became online practice. This research aims to provide alternative teaching in the form of innovations in learning Arabic, especially listening skills, for students through online media-based gaming strategies. This research is qualitative experimentation. Data collection was conducted using three methods: (1) collecting scores using documentation, (2) conducting the gaming process using observation, and (3) obtaining student feedback using interviews. Fifty-eight participants in the game were divided into two classes, namely Class A and Class B. There were 29 people in each class. Each class was divided into five groups, with 5-6 members per group. The game is divided into four scenarios, namely (1) word groups, (2) sentence groups, (3) paragraphs, and (4) character instructions. The game is played entirely online through Zoom Meeting. In this study, five indicators were used to assess listening skills: (1) ability to recognize letters in words (IHK), (2) ability to distinguish similar letter sounds (BBH), (3) understanding sentences (PK), (4) understanding paragraphs (PW), (5) understanding the meaning of vocabulary, phrases, sentences, and discourses (PAK). From the chain whispering game, the average scores per indicator were obtained as follows: CPI (72.8), BBH (72.5), PK (75.2), PW (72.5), and PAK (68). Based on these results, it can be concluded that this online-based chain whispering game can directly train listening skills and, due to the feedback received, is an interactive, memorable, and entertaining form of learning for the students.
